Im in a group called "Take a plant, leaf a plant" in CA. People in my city set up stands where you can drop cuttings or plants off and pick up what others left. The money I saved not buying plants allows me to invest in better soils, and lights I wasnt able to before.

This is brilliant!

2 points on Fluval Stratum: 1 … you can keep reusing it by steaming it after use. 2 … It is the very best for germinating difficult seeds. The combination of high mineral content and allowing air to the roots is a sure success.

yea i always reuse mine unless its full of roots or something and i cant be bothered lol. but I paid $45 Canadian dollars for that bag so im going to get the most i can out of it

I just purchased a bag of fluval from my local pet store. At least I have a base line as far as cost so if I see a deal, I can jump on it. You’re like the 3rd person I hear that has good success with it. I’m excited, thank you for posting your updates! Your plants props look amazing!

for what its worth let me be for 4th person who can tell you they have had great success lol. Its a staple in my house for emergency props and i reuse mine. the key is to not agitate it when you are rinsing it off. just run the water through it and spray with peroxide.

I have about 90 plants! I got rid of the Baltic blue after a week due to mealy bug infestation 😆 but the Peru is doing alright! I’ll show it soon 🌱

Fluval Stratum saved my Thai Constellation, Monstera Albo, and Ginny!

Does anyone have some expirience using stratum with alocasias? Any kind of advice is appreciated :)

I’ve purchased a few hoya cuttings in fluval stratum. They all turned muddy and gross before I was ready to repot. I love the look of it, very clean. However I don’t think I’ll be using it for propagating. Turned out to be a huge mess 😭

Honestly I only switched a couple of Hoya Obovata to fluval and they haven’t grown roots yet. Sphagnum moss always works wonders with Hoya though 🤗🌱🫶🏽

Question: Why not leave the successful rootings in Stratum? No need to move to moss … unless of course you plan to sell them later.

It really depends on the plant and how rooted it is lol I honestly don’t plant to keep any in fluval forever

It’s fluval stratum. It’s mainly used as a substrate to grow plants in fish tanks and since my plants are strictly semi-hydro, I knew it would work out. 🤗🌱 p.s. your English is perfect ☺️

@@-SandMann- it is a pre fertilized aquarium substrate that will become mud over time, so you cant compare it to akadama or any mineral substrate for that matter. Considering the price of aquarium substrates this is a nice, interesting test, but nothing economically viable long term. If you still want to try it just search for 'Aquasoil' and you will find several equivalents.
