Fluval FX2 vs 407 comparison - What is the difference?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Fluval's new FX2 is the smaller version of the FX4, but how does it stack up in comparison to the 407? Let's take a look at each and see where the differences are and if one is better than the other.
A big thank you to Fluval for providing the FX2 for these videos and my testing. This is sponsored by Fluval, but the 407 was paid for out of my own pocket.

    I have a 407 on a 75 gallon for two years now and I love it. The media choices you can try out. The convenient pull out trays. Super quiet plus it keeps my tank water clean. Never had any air issues. Great video on the comparison 👍 21:37

    I currently have a 55 gallon saltwater tank with a 407. I was thnking about going to an FX model as I am upgrading slightly to a 75 gallon tank. The FX4/6 would not fit in my new stand so I thought about the FX2. Your review convinced me to stand pat. Both units will fit in my new stand with no problem and since I already have 2 circulators in my saltwater tank, the extra strength of the FX2 pump, really does not matter that much to me. Thank you very much for this review, It gave me all of the information I needed to make my decision.

    407 is great in combination with UVC (i use it for 6 months and so far, no problems). I think there is no option to use UVC on FX series. If you ask me, that would be a big plus for 407. what i really like on FX4 and FX6 is easy water change with utility valve feature, which is not present on FX2. That was really big surprise for me. Why they gave up of it, did you have problems with utility valve? I am about to buy FX4 and every info about possible problems is more than welcome. And, thank you for all your videos, so many useful information presented on max. friendly way to all of us, beginners and experienced hobbyists.

    I have a 405 and a 406 and set up a 407 on my moms african cichlid tank. Absolutely love the filter. It’s easy and fast to close off the hoses and take off the top for maintenance, clicks back on easily too. Not to mention it’s light weight even full of water. I also have 2fx6s and an fx4 (which I got on black Friday only cuz they ran out of fx6s) I personally don’t see a reason outside of “space” to buy the fx2 or fx4.. for a few extra bucks, just get the fx6.. otherwise, the 407 is a badass filter.

    Excellent comparison between the two Fluvals. I just think filter manufacturers - regardless of the brand name, should be a little more accurate with the GPH flow rate. Running an empty canister filter without the media installed is like saying that this glider plane soars at 300 mph BUT if you add a human to the equation, it'll only soar to a maximum speed of 240 mph. The plane is useless without the human operator as well as the filter is useless without the media installed. So what I'm trying to say is, list the gph capacity when the canister is filled with the filter media, the "honest" gph flow rating! I understand that bigger numbers are more attractive when it comes to marketing the filter but it means nothing at the end of the day!

Ive never run a canister so I dont really know what to expect. Thanks.

I got the 407 from Petco with a $20 bucks off and now Petsmart has a full 20% off the FX2 which is cheaper than going with another 407.... so I got a FX2 and a 407 on my 55 gallon tank... kinda over kill but oh well.

    At my LFS I noticed that any accessories or Quick Clean pads, spray bars, etc, in the FX series is almost double the price. Granted you may not need those, but in the case of the fine Quick Clean pads, which people may buy and replace regularly, for the 407 you get 6 in the box, for the FX you get 2 and the price is the same. Tough decision, I am currently debating between the 407 or the FX2 forms 75 gal. Currently at this same LFS the FX4 is $10 less than the FX2, strange, but the FX4 won't fit in my cabinet.

I use a pump in my 50g that pumps 295gph. It costs $17 bucks on sale, and my water is clean. My container holds only 2L. My diy isn't pretty but my fish are healthy. Im elderly. Can't do heavy. Great content Bentley.. this is why I have a 407 as this really has methodology and the FX2 doesn’t.. I run a custom 800ltr/200gal Lake Tanganyikan community tank, the heart of the system is FX6 X2 and a 407 running stainless steel lily pipes/skimmer and a Evolution Aqua 25watt UV steriliser, my water is crystal clear with zero particles so my fish literally look like they float, Bentley I have watched your content for some years so I don’t need to fully explain uv flow and contact times. The FX series is not compatible with UV sterilisation however it is fully compatible and supported with UVC treatment whether you buy Fluvals own or a big pond style one, it’s all about the power and pipework and this is where the 407 trumps the FX series. I’m not bashing Fluval at all as I like and buy most of their products as my lights are the biggest Plant 3.0.. what I love about Fluval is they make most of their products metric standard so most equipment can be adapted for most aquatic needs.. take care from UK..

    I own a fx2 and the 407. While the 407 is nice the fx2 fits better in my shaker 66-gallon stand. I also never use their tubing. For the FX 2 I use smooth bore pond tubing 3/4" ID with adapters, otherwise the standard size is 1" ID. For the spray bar I needed to use a sunsun 304b. I also maintenance it monthly. I do miss the easy access of my old reef sump.

Does it matter if it is placed before or after the new media? In other words, should water flow through the old media before reaching the new in order to seed the BB? Or does it not matter?

    One thing no one talks about when it comes to filters is. Gph moving through x amount of square inches of surface are of sponge. This one point is why fx model filters are better than all the other filters. When the water enters a filter, it is spread out and, most importantly, slowed down. The smaller the surface area the faster the water moves through the sponges. Which means debris is being blown through your sponges. Remember any sponge 30 ppi or less is biological media. Above 30 is mechanical. In the fx models. Water flows in and travels all around the outside of the canister then passes through a large amount of surface area of sponge. So the water slows way down and the sponge can actually do it's job. 30 ppi or lower sponge won't start catching particles until it develops a good bio film. Think of it like oiling an air filter on an atv. Another thing that makes the fx model filters better is bypassing. The fx filters have very little bypassing. Any canister with all those little trays bypass terribly. So when you get a new filter like the 407 or a sunsun ect and you fill it with media and turn it on. Your already bypassing say 15%. Once your media starts to clog it increases from there. If your one of those people that let your filters go 9-12 months. Only 40% of the water is being filtered biologically or mechanically. The other 60% your just pumping dirty water. You can see this happening on your glass. As the filter clogs and starts to bypass. The glass will be covered with that bio film haze faster and faster. To go back to my original point of square inches of surface area and gph blowing debris past through your sponges. The first thing that begins to clog is your floss or fine sponge. Until you have a good bio film established in your sponges you should clean or replace floss monthly to minimize bypassing. Every month when you open it up to clean the floss you'll notice as the bio film builds the floss won't be clogged nearly as bad and the cleaning intervals will get further between. This is why you should never over or under clean a filter. Or it will never reach its potential or maximum efficiency. Anyhow for these reasons the fx model filters are the best there is. It doesn't matter what size tank you have. 40 gallons or up. Get an fx filter. If it's a very large tank or heavily stocked tank get multiple of need be. An example I can give is my 125 gallon tank. It has several 9+ inch African Cichlids plus several 4-5 inch Cichlids in it. It has two fx6, a sunsun 304b, and an internal filter for aeration. This tank gets fed twice a day everyday. It grows zero algae. It only needs the glass cleaned every month and a half to two months. It has zero chemical filtration and zero plants, and no clean up crew. All because it's properly and efficiently filtered.

    The difference between a canister and a hang on back really comes down to what kind of maintenance schedule you want to keep. If you want something that's easier to maintain but you need to do it a little bit more frequently. Stick to the hang on backs. If you don't mind slightly more complex work when it comes to cleaning out your filters and you want to do it slightly less often than maybe a canister is worth the significant increase in cost. Personally, I think multiple like aqua clear 70s would be a really good go if you're not a fan of the Tidals.

    If you have the UG filter and a cannister that is going to make it possible for what seems to me as a great idea for starters to be able to connect UG filter to the intake of any large quality cannister ( OASE ) is the only filter that I have yet to own .. . The concept seems like it would have a long life span especially if you were to have the BIO-MASTER to have the pre-filter but FX-4 FX-6 are worth the extra money to make the FX-2 irrelevant!!!

  • @BentleyPascoe

    @BentleyPascoe

    It depends entirely on how frequently you want to do your maintenance. If you intended to do maintenance once a month or maybe like a rotation where you're going to do every two weeks you maintain a filter, then hang them back to probably better just because servicing them is very fast. If you're trying to go several months before servicing the filter, you might be a little bit better off using a canister, just cuz they tend to be a little bit better at handling those extended periods.

    Great video Bentley, it was very helpful. Have you found the fx2 or the fx series to be sensitive to sand in the impeller? I set up a new fx2 and few peices of sand instantly jammed the impeller. I assume the sand fell out of my sponges that I used from my previous filter. I took everything apart, cleaned it, got the impeller to freely move like normal and set it back up. The motor made a very slight hum but there was no flow at all... I think the motor burnt out instantly. My gut is now telling me to go with the 407 because the pump is at the top. This is for a 75 gallon mixed peacock tank with sand substrate... even with a pre-filter sponge on the intake of my previous filter (sunsun) it got tons of sand in it but never any impeller problems. Thanks again.

    Which is the more efficient filter in terms of the water flow differences i.e the 07 series flows from the top do wn the side and through the virtical sponges to the bio side, where as I think the fx flows differently.

  • @BentleyPascoe

    I guess it depends on how we define efficient. Power usage? Media efficacy? I would argue they are relatively equal, but the FX2 has more rate/power and raw sponge. So in theory more efficacy. The 407 is more compact, holds similar amounts of media, slightly less sponge, but uses a lot less power, so in theory it can be more efficient in its use of space and power.

    I like my fx4 but I would recommend removing most of the sponges and replacing them with more bio media. Then go find an aftermarket intake that has sponges. The whole benefit of having such a large filter is missed if it's just full of sponges. This will also reduce maintenance on the filter because you won't have to tear it apart to clean out the gunk. Instead you just clean the intake sponges. The only other problem i had with the filter is the motor went out after 3 years and I had to buy a new one for $140 from fluval.

    Leaks at the main seal that I couldn't solve, as well as difficulty priming and restarting made me give up on a Fluval 307. The design of the Fluval 407 looks similar enough to the 307 that I still hesitate to buy the newer one. The Eheim Pro 3 has been much less problematic for me. Eheim parts are apparently getting scarce, but I've never needed a part in ~ ten years of continuous use.

    I'm a 407 user, I'd never use another fluval filter, maintenance is easy,it does the basics better than all other filters in its range. If fluval are looking to replace the 407 with fx2, then that's just greedy on fluvals part. For the size difference between them they'd fit in most cabinets, for a 55/75 gallon aquariums.

    The FX2 is designed to be an expansion of the FX line and not a replacement. It's basically a petite FX4 to make it easier for people with limited cabinet room that want an FX style filters rather than the 407.

    Are the fluval worth it over the eheim classics? The classics seem like the aquaclear of canisters. Just big simple buckets to throw media in. I don’t see why all the other canisters have such strange flow patterns.

  • @BentleyPascoe

    @BentleyPascoe

    I feel like it's a really subjective question. There are some people who love eheims because they're straightforward and no nonsense. There are other people who don't like servicing eheim's because they don't have a simple tray system that kind of makes that service work a little bit faster and simpler. What it comes down to is what you prefer. If you want that big open bucket with a simple flow pattern. The eheim is amazing. If you're trying to do something where you want to mix some sponge with something like media and you want it to have easily built pre-cut things that fit into their pockets, then something like the 407 or even an Oase becomes a little more appealing. I've had a lot of these different filters and I like each of them for different reasons and maybe that's a comparison video that I need to do. Just talk about some of the differences as to why I like certain filters or don't like certain filters.

    @@johnjr47 to me it comes down to this: if you want to do short frequent maintenance, you pick the Oase so that all you really doing is cleaning out the pre-filters once a week and you don't need to service the main body much more than about once every 6 months to a year. If you want to do less frequent maintenance that will take you a little longer. You go with the fluval and then your maintaining it about once every 3 months. This does depend heavily on the fish load in your tank as well.

    My issue woth the 407 is it was poorly designed. There should be a baffle between the trays and the side sponges and they should not be installed aide ways but instead multiple smaller ones stacked increasing the PPI by 5 on each layer. With 60 ppi in the bottom tray and the filter floss pads on top of them. It would be exponentially more efficient. Way too much waste gets into the bio media trays for my liking, a baffle between the two sides and change from horizontal foam to vertical foam would fix this issue.

    Salve io possiedo un 405 versione vecchia... c'è l'ho da molti anni e va da dio... se dovessi cambiare prenderei fx6 quello più grande, per migliorate in tutto... l'unica cosa che appunto come dice lei è il volume esterno del secchio e troppo grande... ci sono filtri come il 407 che anno la capienza interna come fx6. Quindi conclusione personale io andrei verso un'altra marca tipo oase... complimenti per il video 😊

    In the PetSmart app they have something called the treat trail. You can use this to get three different coupons. Some PetSmart locations will allow you to stack all of those coupons on top of price matching the product from a lower price you found online or in the PetSmart app itself, which can typically save you anywhere between 20 to $40 to begin with before you get all the discounts. If they let you stack all of the coupons together, it's an additional 40% off.

    Despite🎉 the comparison of these two (large flow) filters, one must realize that you must realize that using a 407 in an aquarium less than 50 gallons isn't a wise decision. If one has fish that requires a strong water flow/current, then it's fine to have such a large water flow but in a 36 gallon aquarium, the maximum would be the next size down. (307) which again is rather a bit too big for that size. It basically boils down to the size of the aquarium as well as the species of fish one prefers to keep! Just a foot note here... If one chooses to keep a couple of (freshwater) angels in a 30 - 40 gallon system, you're going to want the water flow to be gentle. A 207 would be sufficient. Like the 307, it's also a 3 tray system so you don't really miss too much filtering volume. Remember, freshwater angels require a gentle water flow.

    I've seen a number of people just replace the hosing with a standard vinyl tubing and then fit onto lily pipes. The problem is the FX's use a larger tubing. That is a little weird than some of the standard sizes that you're going to find glassware in. So you might have to build a step down or a step up.

    To me the FX2 and 407 are redundant unless you specifically needed those dimensions to fit in your cabinet. I would choose between either the 307 and fx4/fx6. The 307 for those slightly smaller tanks (150l and under) as it still fits quite a bit of bio media (the lid sits firmer on the 307 too compared with the 407 and is less prone to leaking around the seal) or then jump to the FX4 if you need the extra flow and sponge for that waste and also slightly (but not a whole lot more bio media room). The issue then arises with the inlets which allow small fish/shrimp etc to get sucked in. You may have small fish that like high flow, and then especially the FX4 inlet is a problem and frankly they’re all a stupid design. Lots of small holes in the inlets instead of grills would make much more sense. Wavemakers aren’t a good option for small fish so buying a custom made filter guard is usually the answer.
