As a vocalist myself, it is very welcomed that you have taken some time to speak about Saiki and Miku's vocals. In the early days, they would share lead vocals more often. Miku actually won an idol contest in Japan before Band-Maid, so she is no slouch vocally. In fact, she usually has a song to herself on each album where she sings solo lead (Beauty and the Beast, Time, Rock in Me,. Sayonakidori). Saiki actually had vocal cord polyp surgery in 2017, and there is a bit of a difference in her tonality pre and post, which you will probably pick up on as you progress. And, yes, Miku is the spice-mistress. Just wait til you hear Why Why Why.

This is Band Maid baby pictures. Yes, the “simpler side.” However, the bass solo into a guitar solo was a distinct feature that made the biggest impact, in my opinion. And that has remained a “Band Maid Thing” to this very day. Kanami, the lead guitarist and primary songwriter has “relative pitch.” She has been known to help Miku tune her guitar by voice. The perfect follow up to this would be “Choose Me,” the B-side of their third single. And if you’re feeling adventurous? Do a double reaction with this third single. The A-side was “Daydreaming.” P.S. Here’s an inside Maidiac secret: notice the tiny hat on the drummer, Akane? It was retired with a costume change in 2018. It’s a little way to tell whether the music is before or after their breakout album, World Domination of that year. “Pre- and Post- Tiny-hat Era”

The next 2 logical songs are probably BAND-MAID / REAL EXISTENCE (Official Music Video) which is also VERY early but shows an incredible amount of growth from THRILL, followed by BAND-MAID / FREEDOM (Official Live Video) which is also simple ad linear like this but features the only extended drum solo in the BAND MAID catalog.

There is a moment in a video of Miku tuning a Zemaitis 12-string guitar with Kanami humming the note(s) for her - someone watching asked if Kanami has perfect pitch and one the staff says yes. Kanami smiles and says she's a "human tuner." (side note: BAND-MAID's music evolved mainly because management finally allowed them to record a Kanami composition. After that, Kanami and her mates have taken control of their music allowing Kanami, a great composer in my mind, to originate some amazing songs like FROM NOW ON and DOMINATION and 100+ more tunes.)

Also, they seem to utilize vocal octaves maybe even more than pure harmonization, with Miku on both the high and low end. I have heard Miku sing mezzo soprano all the way down to high baritone. She has an insane range, maybe 4+ octaves.

  • @paulbame865

    @paulbame865

I think their harmonies (I love their octaves) are secret sauce, as are Kanami's supportive bits during vocals -- neither HAS to be there and both make the music better but fit so well it's easy to overlook. I think they often add a different effect on Miku's voice (chorus seems common) than Saiki's which makes the combined vocal texture even more interesting. The 10th-anniv Yokohama concert mixed Miku's vocals a little hotter, and I enjoyed hearing how creative and precise they can be. In Domination, there are parts where no instruments seem to be on the beat, so they use vocals as rhythm too.

Both are from Osaka, but I think different parts. I get the impression Miku had a (financially) poorer upbringing than Saiki. When an interviewer asked Miku about working two fulltime jobs in back to back shifts for a year with barely time to sleep in order to afford to make her bid in Tokyo. Saiki was shocked and asked "Is that true?" Miku smiled and said yes. She had never mentioned it to Saiki.

Now that you watched the first video, keep going in chronological order and observe how they progressed. The songs REAL EXISTANCE and DON’T LET ME DOWN are also from NEW BEGINNING, from the same album that includes THRILL. Try those MVs next. As you go along, you will see the different ways KOBATO and SAIKI combine their vocals, in addition to trading off lead, or engaging in call-and-response. MIKU often harmonizes with the second half of SAIKI’s vocal lines. Sometimes she sings in a higher pitch than SAIKI, but sometimes lower, and other times their voices blend so well it’s easy to miss that there are two.

Love your enthusiasm towards planet Earth’s greatest band. This song was my first exposure to Band-Maid and even though admittedly simple compared to their later songs it nevertheless KICKS ASS! Most bands would love to have their BEST as good as “Thrill”, but to Band-Maid, it was just a beginning. This song actually saved Band-Maid as their record company was going to cut them loose. That is, until this video went viral and the rest is history. I love every member of this band and can write a book praising them. The line “Just Breaking new Gate” refers to the fact that even though they are cute maids looking more K-POP than rock, watch out because no one (NO ONE) can match us, we are here to dominate and if you want, you can come along for the Thrill. But the band kept pushing to write their own stuff, the label finally relented and let them record Alone. And they've been writing all their songs ever since! It was almost their last. It shaped their musical path forward. Their label was about to drop them, but then this video went viral, so much so they thought their Facebook account had been hacked! But look closely. Miku hasn't learned to play guitar yet. She's more or less wearing it as a prop. .I'm not even sure that's her doing the "Hey!". The other notable thing about this MV is that Miku had barely started learning to play guitar and her 'pretending skills' were not great either. On the voices, Saiki is an Alto and Miku a Metzo Soprano and yes they really compliment each other well.

Yes. Some people (AntMusic) speculate that this video made Miku realise that she had to learn to play properly as they were becoming more popular, and all these fans would be able tell if she was just pretending.

This song video saved Band-Maid so it's always going to be my favorite. If this song/video go over the band was done......they were saved! Miku didn't know how to play her guitar here, look closely....so this was only MISA, Akane and Kanami. I always LOVE Saiki's little puffy cheek exasperation exhale at the very end of her vocals.....poor thing had a rough shoot, probably tired of changing uniforms....Lol! I always felt Miku and Saiki are the best duo in rock since the B-52's, not range wise but the compliment each other. No two could ever match Kate and Cindy....IMHO. If you like their harmonies check out "Blooming".....you'll think you died and went to Heaven.

Back to the very beginning. The song that saved the band. This is the original version that went viral. This is very linear and simple as you observed. To be clear they did not "write" any of the songs on their first 3 albums, including this one. It was one of the things they fought for - control of their music and musical destiny. The only exception was the song ALONE, the final song on the third album Brand New Maid. After that the single YOLO was produced with some of the best B side music ever. That was followed by the album Just Bring It ... which is why the music on that album is so important. Fun fact - Miku is NOT playing her guitar in this video. She was told to go to the music store and buy one she liked so the band looked better balanced out on camera. The Rickenbacker is effectively a prop. She could not play a note and was later taught by Kanami. She is quite good now. It is also important to note that Miku gets at least one song on every album where she sings lead. Originally She was the bands sole vocalist but did not think she had the voice to carry a full rock sound.

But the record company rejected all of them. there were a lot of them. The very first song they wrote and arranged all by themselves was Alone, which is a really great song. NittPicc, suggestion. The next Band Maid song you should react to is "Play", the official live version. It's the song the band played right before "Domination", the official live video, during their concert. Every member gets to shine. After that, please react to "Daydreaming", the official music video. It shows that Band Maid is more than just a hard rock band. "Daydreaming" is a rock ballad that Kanami, their lead guitarist and composer, wrote to give a softer song for Saiki, their lead vocalist, perform because, at the time, she was having difficulty with her voice. Afterward Saiki had surgery to remove polyps from her vocal cords. Saiki's voice is so much more powerful now.

The first recording and management company for the Band did not have the same idea for them as a rock/metal band. They saw their appeal as "cute" pop rock and for whateve reason they went largely ignored by the public. They presented nymerous songs they wrote and wanted to perform, but were denied the chance to do so. Finally their company , thinking to release them from contract (unknown to Band Maid), allowed them one chance to do what they wanted, thinking it would demonstrate that their harder rock idea was fallacious. Band Maid chose this song. Almost immediately it found a huge audience outside of Japan, largely because in Japan they were not known or not known for this kind of music. Thus their career was saved. To this day, they are still more popular outside Japan than in. What you see here is that first attempt to push into that musical genre they are known for today. Though not their best song, thank God for it! Great reaction btw!!!!!

Welcome home, Princess NittPicc! I hope you are having a wonderful day. Their studio wanted them to use another song, "Love Passion Matador" and the band decided this was the sound they wanted for their image. This video saved Band Maid; their studio was going to break up the band if this video didn't do well. Fortunately, somebody posted the video on a Facebook page and the video went viral. This video had over a million views in the first 4 days, and 2 million within the first two weeks. When the members of the band saw the view count for "Thrill" they thought that their account had been hacked. That just shows the humility they still have today.

Additional information from Japan It was six months later, in May, that Thrill was featured on J-Rock Radio. J-Rock Radio had sent a letter giving them permission to post the video, but since it was in English, they thought it was a prank and threw it away. The members were surprised to see a sudden increase in access from overseas, and Kanami investigated and found out that it was J-Rock Radio.

Not to be too picky, but I wonder about that info about the members not knowing until two years later management was contemplating ending the band. In one of the radio shows that Miku and Saiki did, Miku talked about crying really hard when she heard about it, so it must have been before they knew the band was safe, or she wouldn't have had that reaction. Maybe it was some detail they learned of two years later?

*Miku Kobato* (from hereunder, Kobato): Actually, BAND-MAID was about to end after two years of starting the band. But we were saved by our overseas audience, and we were able to continue as we were getting good responses from them. If our old selves saw us, I don’t think we would be like, “it’s impressive you’ve come this far,” but instead, they’d be surprised like “wow, you guys are doing this for nine years!?” *SAIKI:* We’ve never really told this story before [laughs]. *――I didn’t know about it! Was it the “Thrill” MV that made you to be recognized overseas?* *Kobato:* That’s right. If we didn’t have that, the band was going to end. *SAIKI:* But back then, we still didn’t know about it, and _we were told sometime later,_ “that was going to be your last release.” And we all went, “What!?” *Kobato:* One day, the head of our agency told us so, and we were all surprised like, “are you serious!?” (from an interview on Tokion, 21-10-29)

The video that saved the band. Except for 1 song on their 3rd album, their first 3 albums were written for them. Their first album was very pop/punk. They made a single after that and this song was a b-side. They told the studio they would prefer to do this song as their first video instead as it’s the style of music they want to make. A little while after its release it got picked up by a j-rock news site. They introduce western audiences to Japanese bands. The video went viral, hit over a million views, the girls thought that their account had been hacked or something. They got invited to play at a festival in Seattle (I think). Meanwhile the studio was planning on dissolving the band and this basically forced them to keep them together. The rest as they say, is history. So while I like this song well enough, it’s beloved within the fan base because without it we don’t have Band Maid.

One of the other "early" items in this video is their Battle Armor - there are others who have done a detailed study of their outfits, but what you see in the video represents some of their earliest outfits. Saiki hated the early maid look and they were careful to not tell her what she would be wearing at first, just that it would be a costume. She pulled the apron off right away. As the band progressed, they changed their designs to suit the tastes and needs of each member while trying to maintain the maid esthetic. They have said that they are all very shy outside of the stage and wearing the outfits has allowed them to get past that. They update and tweak their outfits regularly and it is a lot of fun to see where they are going next. One of the biggest shockers was their Christmas acoustic performance where they were non-maid outfits. Some amazing music that I'm sure you will enjoy when you get there. Love the reactions and analysis!
