FLOW TRAIL PERFECTION! Why did it take me so long to find this place? | Alsea Falls, Oregon

Спорт

Just another trail system that maybe two people have ever suggested and it ends up being an unbelievable experience. The beauty at Alsea Falls alone was striking, but the first tase of "downhill" on Upper Highballer was a fully awkward experience that crushed my expectations. And then we dropped into Highballer proper and things changed immediately. This place is wild! So much fun packed into every berm and hump, the way it should be.
Alsea Falls is exactly 1 hour from I-5 in Eugene, Oregon. Cell reception is minimal, so download offline maps for car and bike navigation. When I was about 7 minutes (or 3.5 miles) from the trailhead Google Maps wanted me to take some non-existent dirt road and started freaking out a bit. Just stay on the paved road (Glenbrook) and you'll get there.

So glad you made it up here for Alsea Falls, Brian! I cut my teether on these trails - 40 mins from my house - and you were the one who got me into mountain biking, some 3 years ago! You classified them precisely. Just enough pump and tech on the blues to demand the fitness, with just enough flow on the rest to make it actually encouraging enough to keep on trying. Team Dirt did great work with what they had access to!

Rider from Portland here. I have been so upset that you hadn't ridden this trail yet. I heard you didn't like riding in Oregon very much after your A-t-c-a experience. These trails are perfect and for years I kept thing "Alsea Falls would definitely change BKXCs mind on Oregon). This is my favorite trail system I have ridden in Oregon. They are perfect. I kind of want to move to Corvallis just to ride these trails every weekend for the rest of my life. I also want to get an Ebike because the ride to the top of Misery Whip is awful. The most times I have gone from the bottom to the top is three times and I am probably never going to do that again. But with an Ebike I would be in heaven all day.

Rider/builder from Salem, OR here. I agree with every word you said about Alsea. It is PERFECT!👌 And the builders keep adding & refining the trails. Better & better each visit! I’m on the board of Salem Area Trail Alliance and I bring up Alsea at every opportunity. Our newest trail in Silver Falls State Park is called Rhoemers Medoe Trail (my baby:) and is our mini version of Springboard. We have allot of fun trails. Come ride w/us at S-Falls!👍😉 (Oh, and you’re dead right about e-bikes making it SO much better!👌

Did you stay at the campground? Or stop by the Waterfall (Alsea Falls)? The waterfall is actually a great place to stop in the summer, if you have a long hot climb, there's plenty of spots for wading and just cooling off. In regards to wildlife, I've seen a deer or two there. Apparently someone saw a cougar a few weeks ago and then took off down the trail as fast as he could and ended up crashing.

Next time you make it out to Colorado you should try some places other than Crested Butte. Maybe head up north and ride Summit County and Steamboat Springs, or head down south and do some of the big alpine rides in the San Juans between Telluride and Durango.

Yeah, there are black bear in the coast range. I saw two up above me (towards Dutchman) when I reached the climb on Springboard several years ago. I yelled and clapped my hands and they took off away from me. Sounded like a couple trucks smashing trees. I kept yelling all the way to the parking lot.

I think the smell of me crapping myself would hopefully deter the bears from eating me lol

Who built those trails? Looks like one of the professional companies. Who pays for it, the state?

The trails at Alsea Falls are all volunteer-maintained, with Team Dirt taking the lead through a cooperative agreement with the BLM. Trails were built either by contractors or by volunteers. The funding for trail building came from BLM, grant awards, and fundraising.

How to you record voice for your videos? I noticed that all your co-bikers have clear voice as well. Do you use special mics or phone recording with handsfree ear buds?

Went there for shuttle day this Saturday (6/15/2024) and had a day-ending crash... on the first run... because I was fiddling with the stupid Gopro that kept stopping for no reason. Speed and distractions don't mix!
