Florida family of explorers discovers treasure from 1715 shipwreck

A family found $1 million dollars in gold and other artifacts off the Florida coast from a fleet of ships that sank 300 years ago. Vladimir Duthiers spoke to the Schmitt family to find out what it takes to excavate underwater.

    I have an assortment of items from the same wreck: an 8 reale, half reale, musket ball, a copper spike, and a few cannonball shards, but I hope to one day get a hold of an escudo from the wreck

    you have to pay the finders of the wrecks money first to search that area, otherwise you could be arrested and your gear and boat seized. But if you find an undiscovered wreck some where else, that would be good too, you have to know which sites are claimed and which are not.

    The biggest problem, as I see it, is getting under TEN FEET of sand!! These heavy coins aren't floating on top of the sand, they've been SINKING for centuries!!! So even IF you have a boat and equipment and the blessing of one of the greediest states in the union, you STILL need to get ten feet down to even look!

    People, if it were not for the treasure salvors, the state museums and others would never have the opportunity to see these treasures. The expense that goes into this type of work is beyond words. Spain under its Warship legal argument should have claim to the treasure, but it would not be fair to the salvors after all the hard work and expense. Spain, or the State of Florida can put their money into discovery, but they don't.

    So your correct in the fact that we don’t (my family) own the rights to the 1715 fleet. Howeverrr 😁 my family does have the proper certification and licensing from the company and the state of Florida who does “own” the rights to dive and recover artifacts from this historical site. And yes we aren’t “that” family (which is the Fishers family to be exact) but we work for them and absolutely have the right. So no fake news here 😊

    Only 10 ships sank in what was call the plate fleet. the entire fleet and it was originally discovered by Kip Wagner, and that was close to Sebastian Inlet. this has to be from a different time and not part of the one's that sank in 1715.

    Ron Bowman same fleet I’m afraid to tell you. As you said there was 10 (actually 11) ships and you’re correct that there is several by the Sebastian Inlet. However one of those 10 wrecked just a few miles south of the St Lucie Inlet which is where we found this haul from 😊
