World's oldest intact shipwreck discovered

The world's oldest intact shipwreck has been discovered in the Black Sea after the most technologically advanced search ever.
Carbon dated to 500 BC, the ship is among 72 found at the bottom of the sea and may have been depicted on an ancient vase.

It's amazing there's things on earth that still exist and haven't been touched for so long. Ship wrecks are time capsules.

Think of all the fossils that sit under the floor of some 70 or so percent of the earths surface, what ancient sea creatures lie in wait Now worse, how many fossils have been destroyed in the millions of years of the ocean floor slipping under fault lines?

PSA: The video of the divers around a ship is of a different shipwreck. It's not possible for divers to dive to that depth, plus there is also the fact that in the video they say that they used remotely operated vehicles to explore the shipwreck. The photo they showed without the divers is most likely the real one. Putting that video there most likely was to draw attention to the nature of the work they're doing in regards to many shipwrecks which they do dive to. While I haven't confirmed this, I do have a certification as an Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver. I don't think this degrades the discovery, I just think it would have been smart for these news agencies to mention that fact so they don't get accused of spreading fake news.

Most of the shipwrecks that we have found around Vancouver island and in the Juan DeFuca straight are no where near that old or in that condition. When we were testing the very first ROV off of Victoria BC in the early 80s we found the remains of 2 old steam ships that no one knew that they were there. I would give damn near anything to be exploring in the Black Sea today. I wonder if any of those Research Vessels are hiring Marine Engineers

I just couldn't help thinking the story was being undersold when it kept being referred to as centuries old when it was actually millennia old. that ship is as ancient to Jesus as Christopher Columbus is to us. considering the perfect conditions necessary for a ship that old to remain like that, it may be a long, long time before we find another like this that's even in the same ballpark.

No wonder the Black Sea keeps the hidden secrets of the European Civilizations. All countries around this sea are pure living history - the blue eye started from there, the oldest modern human remains have been found in Romania, the oldest European city Plodviv is in Bulgaria, then came the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans and so on. Black Sea and the Balkans are definitely the starting point of the European Civilization and the place from where culture has spread into Western Europe, thousands of years ago. That is simply A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. - Greetings from London!

2,000 meters is 2 kilometers. Divers cannot go that deep. That's like a mile and a quarter down. That's deeper than the wreck of the Japanese battleship Yamato in the East China Sea or the Musashi in the Sibuyan Sea. Military attack submarines can't even dive that deep. The record for the deepest dive with scuba gear is 332 meters, set in 2014. At that depth, the pressure being exerted on the human body is 485 pounds per square inch or 33 bar. It took the diver fourteen hours to ascend, due to decompression. Why are we showing divers over a wreck that is supposed to be 2 kilometers down?

Remarkable news, but why can't they specially treat each wooden member and reconstruct the entire ship in a museum? Why do they have to leave it where no one can really see it? I can see leaving some wrecks for future technologies to reconstruct, but use one for present times. I think there are many more intact shipwrecks in the Black Sea as exploration is so limited due to various governments. Does anyone know why they can't reconstruct the ship in a museum? I bet that they could get a return on admissions to see it. Have it tour major cities of the world.

a curious fact: until about 30 years ago, all wooden fishing boats in the area of Spain near Gibraltar ritually drew an eye on each side of the forward part of the boat. When the European Union gave money to destroy those ships and buy modern steel or polyester ones, all those ships, maybe 500 ships, with carved eyes on the front were destroyed.

If they could raise the Vasa, why not this?

  • @pcuko

Why? Because the Vasa was a sturdy warship and was "only" resting for 333 years on the bottom, and only at about 30 meters depth. This one is probably much more fragile due to age and has a weaker hull. It's also very tricky to operate cables and attach them 2000 meters down. In addition, archaeologist probably prefer to keep it down there, because it is better preserved in that atmosphere than in the air of a museum.

@@pcuko The Vasa also has had issues with its preservation. The Vasa is still slowly decaying due to improper conservation . The substance they used to inject the wood of the vasa to prevent the wood from shrinking and breaking down didn't go far enough into the wood. Its also a huge cost that took decades to conserve to its current state and millions of dollars.

Underwater museums have been suggested by experts such as Dr. Robert Ballard (guy who found Titanic). He hopes to create a system of Telepresence ( a system of live video feeds from wreck sites that can be broadcast globally.)

Its been in an environment free of any organism that would cause decay for 2,500 years. I think it can last another 2,500 years . Its currently located at one of the deepest regions in the Black sea at a layer they call the anoxic zone. The water there has no soluble oxygen to cause any chemical reactions and the hydrogen sulfide of the zone kills off any chance of marine organisms from living there (ex: shipworms that eat wood). The zone is basically a "dead zone".

I have a hard time believing that scuba divers are working a 2000 meter deep wreck.Unless my math is wrong that is over a MILE deep. they show a ROV in some shots and then scuba divers. The ROV I believe but not the divers.
