Florida Beach Walk; Sea Shell Hunting at Low Tide. Shells, Critters, Birds and Beachy Goodness!

Take a Florida beach walk with me! I'll identify all the shells we find,we will see a few live critters and discover what low-tide at Fort Myers Beach, Florida provided me on this particular morning.
Shelling at a Gulf Coast Florida Beach seems to always provide me with something interesting to find or take a closer look at. I've learned so many things since moving here and I am having a great time sharing all the goodies I find along the way.
I encourage you to take a Florida beach walk with me and let's find some beachy goodness together.

Rough scallop and the one alphabet cone are also outstanding. Seems shelling is really picking up, can't believe how many univalves I saw just rolling when you were walking through the water. The Bob Ross of shelling is awesome! I'll have to go find a Bob video and maybe get some pointers. My watch is actually a Fitbit. It's my second one (I killed the first one) and while it still works, the notifications don't work anymore, most likely because I continually submerge it in saltwater. The band is a band I bought on Amazon. I set myself up as an Amazon affiliate but have yet to do anything with it. If I find the time this week I'll add links to my website so you can see exactly what I have (assuming they still sell the bracelet). Thank you so much for coming along with me on my "happy" walks!

    Wow you had a pretty good day out there! Not sure if you've visited Tarpon bay beach on Sanibel or not, but I definitely recommend it, I've had good shelling luck there in the past. And near there is where I found my first giant horse conch, as well as a lot of beat up big ones so perhaps that could be a good place to start for those giants!

    I wish my parking pass was good over at Tarpon Bay - I try to stick to the beaches that the county sticker is accepted at since I'm usually on the beach quite a few hours the $ can add up! I tried Gulfside City after a storm and didn't find much so I revert back to the places where I normally go :) I will keep Tarpon Bay in mind though. Maybe one of these days I can afford to go where I want - LOL!

    I enjoy how happy you get when you find a beautiful olive. I just found some spectacularly glossy purple dwarf olives recently when I went up near Pismo State Beach (actually went to a semi-secluded beach near the Dinosaur Caves) on New Years Day. I went to hunt for sea glass, and got a few handfuls of mini pieces. I was even lucky enough to find a couple red pieces! Super rare. I also found a couple pieces of abalone shell, but managed to get gifted an abalone shell. One half, but a full half. Haha. I'll send you pictures when I get everything laid out. Amazing video as always. It's good to see you enjoying your beaches! Also, those nutmegs are gorgeous. Even the beat up ones with holes in them. ;) Imperfections are perfect. 🤗 Happy New Year, Sharmon!

    Do you now why the red sea glass is rare? The color used to make it red is gold, thereby expensive, so it wasn't made very much! Coll right? Those purple dwarf olives are so stinking cute! And abalone? AMAZING! Half is better than nothing! Happy New Year to you too Corey! I hope 2021 is kind to us all!

    @@SWFBeachLife I know! Sometimes Selenium is used for the pink glass which is also a neat tidbit of information in regards to color. I haven't found a pink piece yet, but maybe one day! So, the red pieces of glass around here, from what I was told by my friend, is when old Model T's used to race around the bluffs near Shell Beach/Pismo Beach and the taillights would fall off the cliffs into the ocean sometimes. These races happened back in the 40s and 50s. It sounds plausible, so that just made me fall in love with those pieces even more! I was never a history buff, in fact, I hated history. I always felt like the past is the past, and our future is what we should be looking towards. But recently, learning history through beachcombing is fascinating and I'm intrigued to further my history endeavors by finding old ghost towns around here and scavange around those to find some missing pieces of history. :)

    I know they call these snails Florida Fighting Conchs, but they are actually quite docile. They are algae eaters and don't actually "fight" anyone. Sure, they may rumble with another snail when mating season comes around, but there are a lot of theories why they call them "fighting conchs" but no one really knows why. Great question! Thank you so much for watching!

    There is plenty of public beach access parking (all paid) on FMB. You'll want to park mid to South of the island as much as possible. I've never found anything great up on the North end of the island except one random baby's ear - which was a total fluke! Since I live in Lee County I've purchased a Lee County parking sticker ($60). This allows me to park at a few of the county beaches without having to pay the hourly fees. It's a great money saver if you're at the beaches all the time :) It won't cover ALL beaches, but enough to make it worth it!

    That was a fun beach walk. Thank you. How long is a typical walk and do you find it hard to leave the beach after each visit? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my canceled May 2020 SWF vacation will happen in May 2021. I’m in beach withdrawal and it is painful.

  • @SWFBeachLife

    @SWFBeachLife

    Ugh, beach withdrawal is the worst! A typical day is probably 3-1/2 to 4 hours of walking around on whatever beach we're on. If it's inclement weather (rain or cold) I'll just do as much as I can and probably only be out there for 2 hours or so. It used to be hard leaving the beach but I've become a bit spoiled and I know I will be back in a matter of days. No matter how many times I go, I always look forward to it! I hope your May 2021 vacation will happen too!

    Wow! That's a nice haul! You found quite a few gems there! Love your videos! Just a suggestion: I notice the volume of your narration is kind of low in relation to your opening music for most of your videos. This started since your November 1st video. Your older videos seem louder. On this particular video the volume started pretty low but at around 6:35 it got decently louder but dropped back down at 10:45. Just wondering if it's possible to make the volume of your narration a little louder in relation to your opening music. No biggie if you can't. Still love your videos.

    I have been having the WORST technical issues but I think it's over. For the last 3 weeks I've had to edit and edit and edit the videos because of a flaw in the video and it's been a real struggle - that being said I absolutely can control all the volumes and moving forward everything should be the same audio level. Sorry about that and I VERY MUCH appreciate you pointing this out to me. I want my videos to be relaxing, not taxing! Thank you!!!

    It happened once! A little hermit crab had snuck way into the back of his shell and when I was rinsing the shells off when I got home he was discovered. I live about 12 minutes to the closest beach so I hopped in the car and drove him back to the beach. I am so careful about checking the shells but sometimes it happens!

    Whats the difference between a pear whelk and lighting whelk

  • @SWFBeachLife

    @SWFBeachLife

    3 жыл бұрын

    Pear whelks are usually white and brown only and their aperture (opening) is on the right hand side of the shell. The lightning whelks are always left opening, and will usually have browns and tans and sometimes will have bumps along the top spirals. The pear whelks will have more of a just a swirly pattern. Next time I find these when I'm shelling I'll show you the difference!
