bro the ARC arent what you think, they let down a heap of us in the fires and Derek whilst kinda apologised to me is a bully. They promised us food and assistance to help fire affected animals and they wouldnt do anything. They were buy kangaroo meat and skiting about it whilst calling for donations tp help kangaroos, but they wouldnt buy any food with the money people sent. Sue Arnold, so she isnt vegan hey, she lies about koalas, its cattle farming preventing reforestation and driving climate change, cattle farmers took our forests we all need especially koalas so why do these corrupt self serving people blame logging. You're being fed a lot of bullshit, but you do a great job.

Dean Bolder it’s not the fault of the people buying the houses. The people who built them would’ve known they were high risk flood areas but they don’t care. They just care about profit. Most people don’t have the money to move themselves or move the house itself.

Interviews from people in Northern NSW said that Perrottet was too clean. The saddest thing I’ve heard is a couple were trapped in mud near the hills around Mullumbimby and their baby was left crying further down the hill. They had been there for 24hours stuck in the mud. It was only luck that a volunteer heard the baby crying that they were saved and airlifted to Gold Coast hospital. Chris Hemsworth did more for paying for food drops than the NSW and Federal funded efforts.

The entire operation at the church you showed was run by 4 women with medical experience, the local police officer Dean and the local SES chief Dan. The first few days were honestly traumatising, no help and the community which had nothing itself had to step up. Got so fucking angry hearing Scomo say 'that's what happens in a natural disaster, the community is the first response' - the community did everything from saving people the day of the floods, searching for survivors as water receded, to running evac centres, to feeding people, everything FOR DAYS. We had no food and petrol for almost a week.

I think the politicians on both sides of parliament are a utter disgrace, they both act (that is Labor/Lib) like sales people, where ever they can get kudos for doing nothing they will. Our beautiful nation is in a lot of trouble if we don't improve in the quality of our leaders. What made me shake my head, Scomo was quick to donate $70 million of our tax money to NATO (a military organisation) when this money is needed here however, the response to help flood victims were slow, makes you wonder who our leaders are really serving first???? Take care.

SES wouldn’t pick me up because I had my dog with me, and I wouldn’t leave without him. I had friends lose everything. They don’t live in Townsville anymore, they had nothing to lose, why stay? @@j_0anna I was in Caboolture (moreton bay region) up from the river and very near to the centenary lakes park. The 2011 floods might have been higher for longer but not by much, and the conditions for 2022 were different in how quickly things changed hour to hour. The water collected by the roads outside my father's house was enough to overwhelm the council gutters every time it started to rain. I would sure up the footpath entryways with sandbags whenever I could travel out to the depot to shovel for them, but guaranteed they would be stolen (probably by lnp voters) within the hour. People were more desperate than ever. We were lucky in only dealing with ground level flooding in the house, but we're not exactly sitting on a floodplain, it's not like this is to be expected. Caboolture's infrastructure for storms is like a child's sand-castle by the sea. With thousands of liters per hour just racing up and over newly installed footpaths, carved out of 30-year old gutters, I did start to wonder why I was there at all. I think it was day three of shoveling out the moat around my father's retirement home that I realised things weren't going to get any better; I think I better cement that moat to keep the house from sinking.

Speaking of trains, the rail line was flooded out along with both road bridges over the river and out of Earlwood, so if you wanted to get anywhere to the north, tough luck. I wouldn't judge the army too harshly. A lot of soldiers, the enlisted, have been urging to go down and help. The thing is that soldiers themselves can't make that decision. They have a hierarchy to obey, no one moves without orders. Don't abuse them and shun them, they're only doing what they've been told. Because at the end of the day, they were keen dogs on a leash only told too late that they could go down and help.

I myself manufacture motor boxes for septic tanks, and all of a sudden I've been tasked with building these systems I have no clue about, but prevent flood water from seeping in. All I've had to work with are these photos that don't even show me everything. I made a start based on the picture, but had to stop and wield up a hole I drilled because the picture I was shown was from the first one, so I was basically working with a prototype that didn't work properly. If I ever leave this job, I'm going to write a detailed book with step by step illustrations and information on how to build these systems, then sell it on Amazon for at least 80 bucks. People that actually need the information in flooded areas can have the knowledge for free, or I'll come and build it for them.

Barely anyone had flood insurance, because those areas had never flooded before; the govt. response in less populated areas was near nonexistent for months, because fed and local gov. gutted emergency response; and the media coverage was laughable at best (just publicity shots for celebs and politicians). At least FEMA had the slight excuse of a quarter of the gulf coast being flooded, but with the size of the US it shouldn't have been that much of a strain. These smaller, rural areas really need this kind of coverage. Thanks Jordies.

great footage - thankyou for visiting us. I live just above the flooded area; my husband and my workplaces both flooded as did one of our childrens schools. I had the privilege of working a couple of days at the evacuation centre across the road from council chambers, including that same day you were filming. ScoMo never bothered visiting. Community members all stepped up to look after eachother, it was incredible, and still is so heartwarming to see the majority of people here just doing whatever they can to help. Im so glad you visited coraki - they were forgotten for a long time

"Thinking of moving entire towns" that's the most sensible idea i've heard since this happened. I was just discussing it with someone last night. In places like Lismore, surely rebuilding on that flood plane around the rivers is completely pointless?

During the Lismore floods something I really noticed was the lack of strong intelligent leadership from anybody in positions of authority. If I remember correctly the head of SES was telling people not to try and do rescues themselves due to not being properly trained. Later on we find out the SES only had 2 rescue boats. So in the end it turned out to be a good thing that many people who had boats either didn't hear or ignored that advice and went out and did their own rescues. I was lucky enough to not be flooded, but the co-ordination around trying to help people afterwards from official sources was terrible. There was just so much conflicting advice because nobody had properly taken charge and so everybody was trying to take charge to fill the void. In the initial aftermath, Facebook ended up being the best co-ordination tool to find ways to help people. While I am no fan of Facebook, I guess because most people already knew how to use it, it ended up being a better source of information then any official government website or the news broadcasts.

Still can't believe after how many times I've visited Lismore just how bad the flood seriously got & not just for Lismore either, Coraki, Woodburn, Broadwater & the surrounds were literally underwater, anything next to the Richmond River underwater, Lismore Shopping Square was put in that specific place so it would never go underwater. Now having to clean up, houses that are going to be left to rot or torn down, shops completely destroyed, lives completely ruined, Its a sad state that The Northern Rivers has been left.

i grew up close to lismore and have many friends and family friends who have been completely devastated by the floods, they’ve lost their entire business space, their houses and belongings have been washed away, they ran out of petrol, food, and toilet paper, and we couldn’t even go down to help because the highway was flooded and they were completely cut off

To be fair, despite what the media’s polls may insinuate, you never elect a premier (or a prime minister), only your representative. The *Coalition* gained the most votes/representatives, and therefore the state government, not Gladys.

Went down there with the SES from Armidale, we couldn't get to Casino or Lismore due to the water so ended up helping around Grafton and Ulmarra. It wasn't as bad as other areas but still crazy and the response was sadly disorganised and full of local politics between emergency services etc. They knew it was coming and it should have been a far more oiled machine in terms of response, resource allocation etc.

I lived in Lismore for 20 years. My house flooded 4 times. The 'rain bomb' flood that hit absolutely annihilated the entire centre of the city including my mother's house. I swam her, my wife, and the dog out of the house as water rushed into the second floor. I've never seen a flood like that. After a week, we went back in and tried to salvage photos and clothes. Then we spent weeks ripping all the walls out because they were covered in toxic mould. We had to throw almost everything in the house out onto the street as it was beyond repair. My mother is retired with a hip and knees that need replacement. She was going to live out her life in that house. Now she's renting a self-contained room from a friend while she waits for builders. I know lots of people in Lismore STILL living in tents or camping inside the shells of their destroyed homes. This is a year after the floods.
