Flooding in Europe kills at least 150 with hundreds still missing | DW News

Record-breaking floods have killed at least 150 people in western Europe. Most of the deaths are in Germany's west - where the disaster area stretches between the towns of Heinsberg, Erftstadt and Ahrweiler, near the border with the Netherlands and Belgium. More than 130 people have been confirmed dead and more than a thousand are still missing. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has promised support for victims' families, and to the damaged towns.
In Belgium, at least 20 people have died in the flooding. The government has declared Tuesday a national day of mourning.
The towns of Liège in Belgium and Venlo in the Netherlands have been hit hard. In Venlo 10,000 people were told to evacuate, as well as 200 patients from a hospital. In Liege, the swollen Meuse river has burst.

Honestly as a German it makes me so angry. It was predicatable Over the years many run off areas for floods (mainly fields or other low laying areas) have been turned into residential areas and the straightening of many rivers have contributed alot. People have warned about that for years, but what do a bunch of farmers know

That is so sad, if you've never lived in an old house, it's hard to understand what it means to lose a home that so many lives were lived in, joys, tragedies, life, death, birth, disasters, wars, plagues. They are alive in their own way, built lovingly from the gifts our Creator gave us, by hard work, no electricity, power tools, running water. They give you a deep sense of continuity of life, safety, peace. My home was built in 1784, much younger than many of yours. I'm so very sorry that you have lost those precious homes, and the people you loved who dwelt in them. I pray all of you will recover swiftly and your sense of safety and place will return. Much love from western NYS, the Gardeau rez, Native America.

@Dean Jones Same thing in the US.... Katrina's devastation came from them blowing up the levies, not the hurricane. I worked for the gas utility in the St. Louis metropolitan area & have worked every flood from the big one in 1993 on. Like us , these areas in Germany we'll have a lot to learn and decisions to make. Unfortunately we all learn a lot more from our mistakes than we do our successors. With changes in Mother Nature, climate change, sea-level rise, hurricanes and man-made infrastructures it makes it all the harder to predict and plan. Thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected. You we'll all get through this and rebuild in areas less prone to flooding just as we have.

COVID is far from over and I expect more climate catastrophes, a war between the superpowers, more terror and more and more division and social unrest. The Book says its gonna be hard for everysingle one. Get prepared - physically, mentally and spiritually.

As per donating to relief organizations, the problem is knowing which organization is the most trustworthy, that will actually use 80%-90% of donations to actually help those in need. To many so called relief charities pocket 50-70% of donations as administration costs. Even organizations like the Red Cross is guilty of using a high percentage of donations for administration costs.

We are talking about what are fairly small cities or outright villages, which have existed in the area since at least the middle ages, some since roman times, and which were build on small streams which for sure HAVEN'T been straightened out, since you can hardly argue where a stream should go in what is basically a vulcan mountain area (the vulcan has been inactive for pretty much forever). This is not an area in which rain can just sicker away easily BY NATURE, and the issue was that too much rain was falling at once. STOP trying to distract from the bigger problem by pointing to supposedly changes to the nature in an area you obviously know nothing about, and just admit that rain over the scala is simply not normal. There is a bigger problem there which can't be blamed on people being careless. Those were houses which were standing there for ages. The historical worth lost is immense, too, for that reason, but that naturally becomes a background issue with over a hundred dead at least.

Dude, it is a disaster, don't politicize it. Pray for the victims. Don't blame each others or mocking the Germans. Cause Disaster can happened anywhere anytime including in your country, city or neighborhood.
