Dozens missing after severe flooding causes chaos in Germany | DW News

At least nine people have died in parts of western Germany amid heavy rains and flooding, local police said on Thursday. Some 70 people were missing, many of them after the collapse of six houses in Germany’s western state of Rhineland-Palatinate following hours of torrential rain. About 25 more buildings in the Schuld region were at the risk of caving in, local police said.
Heavy rains lashed western Germany on Wednesday, causing massive property damage and prompting mass evacuations. Several motorways were closed. Rhineland-Palatinate’s Vulkaneifel district was forced to declare a state of emergency as several areas were not accessible due to the torrential rain. "The situation is very serious, we have many flooded roads and villages that are no longer accessible," District Administrator Julia Gieseking said from the town of Daun late Wednesday. She said the state of emergency would allow the military to join relief efforts. The German Army sent over 230 soldiers and heavy machinery to help clear streets affected by flooding.

german here..its not the first we also had a big snowfall some months ago and also it flooded already some days ago some cities. Problem is that it was the last day not really summer weather and more like an autumm weather. Dont forget that in the USA is a big heat at the same time. Some residence said that they have never seen so much water in the whole life of living 60 years or something in this city. Also just a geographicial important thing to mention is that we have a lot of areas to let the water flow somewhere else in this areas cause we are ofc prepared with river overflowing and so on but in this case even this areas couldnt hold off which just shows how much water it is.

People also nearly forgot that and its just 2-3 days ago. Also at the same time the heat in the USA is still running..and island are disappearing in the ocean which is actually normal but because the increasing water its faster. Or the magentite field of earth that helds of meteores and stuff from south and northpol is decreasing rapidly which is influencing GPS and so on...

Some of them include: Rampant lawlessness, violence, famines, pestilences, wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, raging seas and changes in the earth. A climatologist studies weather patterns over a period of time. What needs to be understood as a basis for judgement is climate SCIENCE. The physics of climate science. Trends in data measurements. The consistency between what science is telling us to be likely, and what we are now beginning to see. We ignore this at our peril. Am I hopeful that people, and especially our sociopathic leaders, will come to their senses any time soon? Let me put it this way: I'm not holding my breath.

We see watered down summaries, censorship at the level of mass media, and just plain lying. My former neighbor led one of the IPCC groups for a while and he experienced it first hand. Most people don't want to, or simply can't, get past the filtering to judge what is credible science and what is not. And there is a deliberate disinformation campaign being waged by those in the fossil fuels industry. Public trust in science, in politicians, and in the media in general is mostly gone. @@Sedna063 yeah it happens but not in that amout of sheer water. A lot of people never have seen that amount of water. Now you could say its an exception cause sometimes its happening really that badly and its true its a lot more than an usual flood but we also had some months ago already an usual snwofall that was also a bigger one and cause floodings everywhere just by the sheer amount of water melting. And just for your info we are actually prepared in this river areas for floodings its not like we dont know what a flood is. A lot of areas are only meant to get flooded in case of a dam break or in case of heavier rain. You have to understand that all this things couldnt hold this amount of water off and the amount of rain in the sheer seconds of time were also a problem. The thing about climate change is not that you have a heavier rain or snow..that is true it happens since ages. Its more the frequency about how oftne this happens per years. Like in germany we a word called "Jahrhundert-Hochwasser" which would be rougly translated to "hundred-year flood" and its meant to be a word for saying this is a flood thats so extreme that would only happen every 100years...the frequency changes of such normally "rare" events is increasing. Nobody is saying that this is actually special to get flood. And that is the thing you have to realize, its easy its just normal untill its too late. We huamns have an instinct about ignoring unpleasant truth its make us easier to not worry about something and wasting energy into something what we dont have in front of our home. Trump found a lot of follower with his saying of the climate change doesnt exist casue its the easist answer to the problem. A simple it doesnt exist fix the problem. Nobody wants to listen to somebody that is saying how bad something is they want an easy answer and easy solution. And yeah you may say thats not the case but the problem is its the truth for the most people and the people that actually working on it getting so often heard that ppl. start to ignore them. Who wants to listen to somebody that is saying you 24/7 how bad something is and what we have to do which also requires effort if the human is meant to be lazy. Also we would have to scrafice our live standard for this like eating locaclly and so on which is already a problem... There are reasson for automation of products and reassons why cars exist. Most cars doesnt get used for long travel, no its faster and less work than walking...

@@jellyfishi_ oh really, 100 years ago you say ... how about the Hamburg flood of 62 ? over 300 people died, over 60.000 had their houses destroied and back then Germany had a popluation of 50 million so... adjust that for "inflation". And this was a 1 minute google search, I bet I can find more extreme weather events involving water and such but ... whatever, you do you.

Spent 7 years in Germany while in the USAF. Loved it there, beautiful and the people are very, very nice. Fortunately, the hard-word ethic, and cultural support, the Germans will recover. Thoughts and prayers for those who lost their lives or friends and family.

This exact incident happened to us in India multiple times. Heavy rains caused landslides and all the dams had opened at the same time due to overflooding , which resulted in a disaster that took many lives and made 1000s homeless. My deepest condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives during this unfortunate incident. Hope our German brothers and sisters can overcome this disastrous time very soon.

I live next to the Rhein in Bonn and the water level is high but I don't see any problems here. Normally I have worry at the end of winter because as the snow in the Alps melts the Rhein can overflow, so there is a normal awareness of flooding. But everything is dry, no problems at all.

That's probably thanks to the width of the river and several flood areas in Baden-Württemberg (I live near one) which made the river capable to absorb more water than other narrow rivers or creeks. Heidelberg am Neckar is prone to floods.
