Flooded Forest Through The Excess Water In The Beaver Dam - Two Dams Removal With Excavator No.61

Flooded Forest Through The Excess Water In The Beaver Dam - Two Dams Removal With Excavator No.61
📝Basic information:
Location: Poland
Date of recording: August 2022
About my work - I remove beaver dams when I receive an order from a state organization.
I do not choose which dam to remove. It is decided by officials at the request of nearby residents. Each dam is assessed in advance if it can and if should be dismantled.
Removing the dam is not a threat to beavers. I do not remove their houses - lodges.
Dams are removed only in places where beavers cause damage, for example by flooding nearby fields, flooding the basements of nearby houses, or when the stream on which beavers built their dam is degraded.
Even though beavers are very invasive animals, they are under strict protection in our country.
I personally like all animals, so beavers are fine too.

    All they do is pile sticks on the low spot of the stream. The stream does the rest. It silts in the gaps. And they just keep doing it higher and higher. Watch when they pull all the sticks out. They have to dredge the apron behind the dam to get the flow going again.

    You really need a bucket with a "thumb" to make it easier to move the really big stuff. I'm surprised that we didn't see you get in with the chainsaw and remove, at least, the lower branch of the fallen tree that is just on top of the water; it is already catching stuff to create a future blockage. What determines whether you use machinery or remove dams by hand? Very enjoyable video.

Other times, we work in completely different places, and sometimes it is simply unprofitable to go to one or two dams with an excavator, so then I drive a passenger car. Btw we only work on what we have commissioned. You can't just go into the forest and start cutting down trees without permission🙂 Even the fallen ones 😉 Besides, there were a lot of other fallen trees in that stream, and we just had to remove the beaver dams🦫🦫

    Thats a nice size beaver dam you tore out but in my opinion the excavator needs to clear out the backside of the dam better before opening it up so most of the sticks and debris don't get washed down the ditch/creek and create problems later on, like when you do it by hand you start on the backside then use the potato rake to start the main water flow, that how we did it when possible and it got most of the debris out of the way of the water flow. Anyway it's always fun to watch you tear these dams out.

  • @msTECH86

    @msTECH86

    Hello. In my opinion, I will never manually remove the dam as thoroughly as an excavator will. It should also be noted that the current of flowing water washes the bottom of the stream just before the dam. Therefore, you should not deepen this place too much with an excavator. But every dam is different, depending on the terrain and the amount of flowing water. Sometimes it is actually the case that with a small amount of water there is a lot of silt in front of the dam, but all this is best seen when you are there 🙂

  • @James_P60

    @James_P60

    Жыл бұрын

    @@msTECH86 the dams you deal with are definitely bigger then what I used to clear, the dams I cleared where on streams connecting different size lakes, at times if we could get a smaller excavator in the operator would clear the silt and vegetation in front then clear the backside up to the point of the dam collapsing then do the main cleanup, just a good way to get most of the dam onto the side of the banks, the dams I cleared with a potato rake were usually only around 2 meters wide and a meter or so tall, we are also allowed to trap and remove nuisance beaver. Again I enjoy watching your videos because it's something i can no longer do due to my health.

    You should take two scoops with the excavator about two feet behind the stick dam before you scoop the stick dam.

    How do beaver dams help the environment? Environmental Benefits of Beavers - King County Beaver dams are like speed bumps in the streams and help slow down the water as it moves through a system. Slower water means less erosion and in some cases less flooding from storms. Ponds also absorb some of the water even if they already appear full, so the volume of water also decreases through a beaver system.A

    These ditches and canals were dug in places where there was too much water. If local farmers thought there was not enough water, they could raise the water level with weirs.

    Water holding capacity shortened, wetland habitat dewatered, nutrient absorption in Riparian zone lessened, runoff escalated, and well other ecological drivers for longer term water retention, primary growth, woody material added to the watershed, well those do produce inherent ecological diversity created by beavers.

    Would all that black silt from above the dams be good for gardens? Maybe load it directly into a gravity box wagon to drain somewhat then shake it through a series of screens to get rid of sticks and debris. With enough dams to remove you would have a mountain of soil to sell for gardens,new lawns,potting,and whatever else. Thoroughly dried to lighter weight it could be shipped in bags for high dollar if it is quality. "Black Gold" of another sort instead of oil.
