Flood Watch: Tips to Filling and Positioning Sandbags for Ideal Protection
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Spring flooding is threatening to cause damage in our area. We consulted a local expert, Jim Gause, to learn how to correctly fill and position sandbags to protect our home from water damage.
Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to use sandbags. A little bit of knowledge can be very valuable. It pays to have supplies ready in advance. Sandbags can be helpful to protect from flooding and bullets, and for creating mass to protect from nuclear fallout.

Excellent, I learned no more then 50% bag filled & stack in a running bond . Better to be ready prior to needing the sand bags.
This is an excellent video on how to make and use the sand bags. I live in Phoenix, but it made me realize this instruction can apply wherever I live. Never too late to learn something good for preparation. Thanks for the excellent video
Thanks so much for the great info! I live in Stockton, and with last years burn scars on the mountains behind my house, they say we will flood. I have a sand bag filling station at the end of my driveway, and I didn't know how to use it. Now I do thanks to you! Yay! Now I'll be able to help others too.
I live in Iowa and we had major flooding in 1993 and very severe flooding in 2008. I did not know the correct method for sandbagging either time. Thank you. One thing we did learn though was that there are plugs you can buy for basement sewer drains. And we put the sandbags in the basement toilets. Maybe you could do a video on that also.
WOW. WOW. WOW. Incredible. Did not know ANY of this. What a learning spot about a critical way to care for your home and property. WOW. One of the best videos filled with pertinent information you have presented. Thank You Jim, et. al.
This was a very interesting demonstration on the placement of sandbags to prevent flooding. It was very informative. Thanks, too ❤
Thank you so much for this demonstration.
Wow! Thats an eye openner. THANK YOU very much for this brilliant vid. We had 305mm rain in a couple of hours. It flooded the house. Most rain in 140 yrs.
We used a cut off traffic cone to fill them in the military! Great video.
Thank you for sharing the knowledge. I've never filled bags before but I am more informed now because of this video.
Zero experience, however… the next town over has problems with excess water in heavy rains flowing off the main roadway into the street & people’s homes. We thought of going over to help but where the sand & bags are is unsupervised & we didn’t know what to do. Now that we know those bags only need to be filled half way I’m sure we can help residents fill some bags while they place them to divert the water away from homes. 😊
Interesting. Good to know. Thank you Jim and Jonathan for the video. Happy trails!
I'm lucky I live on the high side of our flood zone but 1/2 of a nearby neighborhood has been declared a flood zone. The people there cannot sell their homes because no insurance wii touch them so their only recourse is to protect what they have. There are few homes left. Hopefully they won't have a flood anytime soon but if they do, I'll be able to help them better. Thank you. ❤️👍🇺🇲
Miami here! i got sandbags for the next rain...we got flooded with the Fort Lauderdale rain!!!
Great demonstration Jim and Jonathan, thanks!
Very useful information. Forwarding to others. Thank you very much!!!
Thank you for sharing this information! Filling the bags with less send, is not intuitive for me. I'm glad I watched this, as I learned quite a bit. I do have a question though, Seems as though he suggests to untie the bags. Could you please clarify/explain this? I understand that the edge of the bag will be folded over, but if the wall gets knocked over, or a couple bags get knocked over, I feel as though it is much more likely for the sand to be washed away.
Love the one man sandbag filler. What is the height and diameter of the pipes ? Sick and tired of filling and holding bags at the same time.
Awesome demo!
What great information.
Excellent content
Great video and very timely.
Great information.Well done
The traffic cone and ladder filling stations should have been mentioned as nearly every town has them.
Wish I had this info when I was in the Marine Corps! Ha ha
Take care
Fortunately we never need to sandbag but our basement floods once or twice a year even with a sump.

@@TheProvidentPrepper definitely. We learned real quick to keep everything on racks
I have an unsilly question ❓. What is done with all the sandbags after they're no longer needed?

The sandbag fails within a few months. Not knowing what the bag was exposed to the city/supplier does not have the resources to gather or accept the liability of safe disposal. Often the contents are disposed of where legal and bags are recycled.
Very informative video! What is the size of the tubing for the six bag filler?
Is it best to start the plastic directly touching the ground under the 1st layer of sandbags or is it supposed to start on top of the 1st layer of sandbags? Thanks for the video!

If your stack is no higher than 1 foot TRAP the plastic sheet under the bottom row, WRAP it on the water side over the other layers and over the top. CAP a row of bags over the top of the plastic to hold. Bags stacked over a few high need additional width. The plastic is held in place on the water side with a row of bags at the bottom of the bags and a cap on the top. If the water has limbs etc. floating in the water the plastic sheet may be damaged. Place a water side layer of bags to protect the plastic barrier. There are many videos and sites teaching advanced sandbag. Thanks for learning and being part of the solution.

OK
For flooding control, why not use water to fill bags? Much cheaper. Readily available and easier to deal with when the ordeal is over.
