    14:50 - Wow that is a clever way to skim out oil... I wonder if thats how they do it on oil spills in the sea... Could never think of such simple system without it being super advanced.

    Thanks for the oil skimmer idea! I will give it a try. My new to me horizontal saw seems to be full of oil and the sump stinks. It does not get used everyday and the flow is low and short cycles times to begin with. BTW: I use landscape fabric for a chip filter. A 4' roll covers my whole chip catcher in a single piece. Its polypropylene so no issues with coolant. It may actually be cheaper than the shop rags.

    Hi Bill I tried landscape fabric but my flow is to high and the area to small. Been trying to figure out how to get more surface area because that is actually a finer filter and does a better job. Good luck with your skimmer! Tim

    great idea for the skimmer!! I have my first vmc sized machine on the way and am trying to absorb knowledge that will make life simpler going forward far as maintenance and up keep. I am running Koolrite 2290 for coolant and it sounds very similar to the blasocut. I currently run it on a tiny grizzly G0704 with flood and a full enclosure and my part finishes are unreal since switching to it. I will have to grab the posts for the skimmer once the machine arrives. looking forward to testing it out! thanks for the great videos!! subscribed and liked!!

    Thanks Chris and congratulations on your first VMC. It is a pretty big step up in capability and performance. Yes, good flood coolant can make a world of difference in part finishes. If you would like to share some pics or video we can put them in the next viewer video. Thanks again, Tim

    Aerating your coolant will keep the bacteria growth down. A simple bubbler from an aquarium works wonders.

    Hello BTACNC, Yes an aquarium bubbler will also work. And it works by 2 methods. The first is what everyone thinks of, by putting a lot of small bubbles into the water. It also works a second way as well. The small bubbles floating to the surface will generate water movement an up welling. With the bubbler it is not as critical to keep the surface clear of oil because your putting air into the system below the surface. Thanks for the comment!

    I knew someone would ask that! I had the bin in one hand, drill with an end mill in the other. For some reason by Brain could not compensate for the cutting forces of the end mill and it walked sideways a little on the first slot. So I figured I would make them all match! Other then me being in a hurry, no. One thing I forgot to talk about in the video, you can either weight the bin down and set it at the correct level for skimming. Or add some foam to the rim and let it float at the right level. If you let it sink you may need to turn it off while your running. If you let it float it will follow the level of coolant correctly as long as it does not hit the bottom. Mine just sinks and it works fine.

    Yes, if you keep your coolant moving all the time it will stay good a lot longer. This batch is almost 2 years and still good.

    I have a couple questions that may seem pretty straight forward, but I just want to ask anyway to make sure. You said the power head will be agitating the coolant pretty efficiently as it is a 400 gal/hour pump, have you noticed if it restricts the coolant flow at all when using it in conjunction with the machine running? Also, have you noticed a point at all where the tramp oil starts seeping out of the container? A question about the rags and filtering the chips out of the sump: When you say you lay the rags in the mesh filter screen in the sump, are you talking about the chip catch where the coolant flows out of the cab and drips back into the sump? the tray that just sits on lips on the tank itself?

    I turn it off when I run the machine because the coolant level drops below the slots and then the container empties out from the power head. If you made the container float so it can maintain a set level on the slots then you could easily run it and the machine at the same time. No, the oil does not ever seep out unless the power head is off for a bit. I clean it out in the morning before running that day. Yes, I just put them in the chip catch, my trays have about an inch lip on them so it takes a far amount of chips to plug them up. But I do clear away the fine chips every few hours of running or they can overflow, but just over the edge and into the sump.

    Really need a skimmer and eventually i want to get a good $500 filtration package msc, but for now I'm on a budget and I'd rather not spend $150 just to replace with a $500 in the next year or so. Hopefully this will last me until then. Bought the same one you use in the video haha

    Just wanted to let you know that I finally installed mine and almost instantly I saw how well it worked and finally was able to skim the oil out of my prescious expensive coolant haha. Thanks again for this video! I went on the Uber cheap and used a Folgers Xtra large coffee container (found at costco, Sam's club etc) and used that for my container. Worked excellent. I will make a video one day once I start my machining channel. (giving you the credit for the idea of course) haha.

    They are working great as filters. Use the Harbor Freight ones though, the real shop rags are to dense and they plug up quick with fine material.

    LOL, that is called over engineering and if 1 is good, 3 is better! Ok, when the machine was made there is a fan on the top of the spindle motor to cool it. There was no filter. The fan sucks up coolant mist and cakes up in inside of the motor causing them to over heat. Fadal released a retrofit kit that puts that filter on top of the fan. It was over $100. I have a CNC mill and a hunk of aluminum. So I made one for like $20 in material. But when I put the filter on it cut the air flow down by a LOT. So I did some math and to get the minimum drop in air flow I needed 3, there $5, so a stacking we went. And I almost never need to change them either ;)

    No Problem Mark, that is exactly what I did, just two pieces of all thread. Feel the air flow coming out of the bottom of the motor and then pull the filter off and watch how much it increases.
