Floating Paradise Lost: M.V. ENRICO COSTA To Norway and the U.K. 1993

Join Peter Knego on his 1993 cruise from Amsterdam to Norway and Tilbury on Costa Line's classic 1951-built ENRICO COSTA. The ship was built in 1951 as the French liner PROVENCE and purchased by Costa Line in 1965, becoming their ENRICO C for Genoa to Buenos Aires line voyages and part time cruising. She became ENRICO COSTA in 1984 and was completely rebuilt and re-engined with diesels in 1989. She was sold to Star Lauro/MSC Cruises a year after this video was shot, becoming the SYMPHONY in 1994. She next became the AEGEAN SPIRIT and then the OCEAN GLORY I. After being arrested at Dover for numerous safety violations, she was sold for scrapping at Alang, arriving there in 2001. Other ships Knego takes you aboard during this voyage include Chandris Fantasy Cruises S.S. AMERIKANIS (ex KENYA CASTLE 1952) and Mercy Ships M.V. ANASTASIS (ex VICTORIA 1953). Also seen in passing are Hapag-Lloyd's 1981-built EUROPA, Royal Caribbean's SUN VIKING and Holland America's then brand new STATENDAM (1993). This is a full length feature at 32 minutes and change, so grab a snack and something to drink and enjoy! And PLEASE don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already and if you like, please click the tab and make a comment if you are so inclined. Thank you! #enricocosta #costacruise #halcruises #mercyships #chandrisfantasycruises #ssamerikanis #alang #classiccruiseships #oceanliners

Great video! Yes, we ship geeks are a funny lot. Only we can be so preoccupied with a ship sighting that the experience of a port of call is almost lost on us. And the scattering of your fathers ashes even brought me a few tears. What a beautiful way to put him to rest.

Peter, I can only echo Alan's sentiment, films like your keep the memories of proper ships alive. With todays cruise ships I find my interest waning. Back to those late summer days of 1993 and our paths were so nearly crossing. I had travelled down to Tilbury to see Enrico Costa on 23 July and I was there again to see Statendam on 28 August. Then a little over a week later I was again in Tilbury but this time to board Enrico Costa for a short cruise to Amsterdam and Rouen. Your film brought back so many memories of that cruise, good and bad. We had the worst cabin I have ever had the misfortune to stay in and Costa's food was unremarkable. However, the ship had great charm and I am pleased to have sailed aboard her.

Thank you, dear Clive! We were hovering over the same ships just at slightly different intervals for so many years, weren't we? What a difference a chef makes. Thanks so much for posting. I'm honored you watch these videos. :)

Thanks so much, Deborah. I'm so happy you enjoyed this latest adventure. I will probably do a Decked! of ENRICO when she was SYMPHONY at some point but not in the near future. I'm finding the Decked! features of the classic ships are not getting many views (CONSTITUTION bombed but the cruise post on her was a big hit), so in this one I combined some Decked! elements with the cruise part. I documented all of AMERIKANIS but to keep the video of a watchable length, did not show the whole ship. I will also probably do a feature on her with the footage shot in Amsterdam combined with footage of her laid up in Greece. ANASTASIS was a treasure ship and thankfully much of her lives on here in my home. Thanks again. :)

What a pleasure to see those liners from the 50's, working vessels with visible machinery along with their beautiful interiors, I'm also interested in the story of Anne Boleyn. You may know of the British author Norah Lofts who wrote a great deal of well-researched historical fiction. One of her books is "The Concubine", a novel about Anne Boleyn. I live in West Palm Beach Florida and are lucky enough to have the original Costa Classica. Although rebranded as the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise she still has her wonderful fittings. The chapel is still intact, her theater still has the Pinocchio tile scenes on the wall, and the most beautiful white marble floor to wall in her centrum. Glad I was able to do it when some former liners still existed. Thanks for posting here. Oh, the only things I got from the ex ENRICO were ten chairs and an OCEAN GLORY I lifering just because it was on a pile of stuff about to be trashed. I DID get a couple of those identical settees from the SOLARIS, which I ended up giving away or selling at a loss, only to find out one of the dealers I sold them to made a fortune off them when he had them redone in a more appealing fabric. As for what I wished I rescued, that PROVENCE glass panel in the dining room is haunting me. I hope Costa removed it before they sold her, otherwise, I fear it ended up getting destroyed.

Great vid as always! though not my favorite cruise ship, the Enrico certainly has her charm! (especially the Promenade) also random fun fact about the 1981 Europa, it was Originally going to have a "Canberra Style" set of funnels, but seemingly last minute they decided instead to go for what she had as seen in the video, I have a 1978 article page showing a Model and a profile with those funnels and I think they looked quite neat!

Have you noticed in the financial recession of 08 a lot of the ships from that time in history were scrapped and then in the covid-19 crisis the cruise ships from the 80s and early 90s got scrap? Seems like every time there's a financial some sort of planetary catastrophe we lose a generation of cruise ships

Imperial Majesty's lovely old REGAL EMPRESS (1953) and OCEANBREEZE (1955) were a year or two newer but fellow classics, nonetheless. :)

One-time looked up the history of Costa Cruise lines and Costa Concordia is not the first stupid mistake they met that ended up costing them a ship

Visited her in 1978 when she came to Los Angeles on her world cruise. And then again twice at Freeport as BIG RED BOAT III and finally at Alang when she was being broken up. Made a video about her called "The Sands Of Alang". The download is on the MidShipCentury.com site. She was magnificent and several of her art panels and some of her fittings live on here.
