I had a clerk at a record store like this. She was being overly friendly each time I came into the store. I later found out she was in therapy for being super uncomfortable talking to strangers and even regular customers. She was counselled to talk in order to get out of her anxiety. So I was just the result of a successful therapy experiment. There was no I like you or even friend zone. Just the subject of a social experiment.

I didn't want to creep on a girl at work, so I knew the owner of the cafe and I asked him if said barista was single and maybe interested and he kindly informed me she had a boyfriend and all customers had hearts drawn on their cups during February (for Valentines). 🙃 I know better now lol. This is actually a scenario I lived through. I dated a barista for 2 years. We almost married. And yes I met her at a coffee shop and thought she was flirting with me. So I made a move and it all kinda worked out. After a month she acknowledged that she didn’t try to flirt with me and that’s the thing she always did, just smiled with her beautiful smile. But I guess I was the lucky one, to be misinformed but still succeed in a way.

I remember reading about a grocery store chain that implemented a policy that required their cashiers to be friendly and chatty with all of the customers as part of their "friendly folks" image. So the cashiers would smile and engage each customer in small talk. They had to terminate the policy because male customers were taking the friendliness as an invitation from female cashiers. Random dudes were literally hanging out in the parking lot and approaching the female cashiers when they finished their shift.

Had a similar situation happening to me with the cute pharmacist working near my place. For two whole years, I had the impression that she was flirting with me and last time I went there, I was the last customer of the day. We chatted for about fifteen minutes and she would laugh at my jokes and engaging in the conversation by asking me open-ended questions... Just when I was about to ask her out, she started talking about the fixer-upper she bought with her boyfriend. At least, I don't have to change shops. So I got that going forme, which is nice.
