Flinders Street Station - Peak Hour - August 2019

Walking into Melbourne's Flinders Street station at the start of the evening peak. I head to Platform 5 and jump on a Comeng heading for Sunbury. Note the big jolt when the train takes off - not sure what's happening there, but the same thing happened departing Parliament as well. A drunk women vomited all over me at Flinders once. I was sitting waiting for my train and she stumbled up to me. I thought she was going to ask for a cigarette or dollar. But when she opened her mouth that wasn't what came out, instead I got showered in undigested wine and noodles. That was the Only time though....Every other time at Flinders has been very pleasant.

It seems every major world city except wellington NZ has the "swipe the smart-card before you board" system. Smart-Cards (or snappers as they are called in wellington) can only be used on buses and you can still buy your ticket on the train and if its busy can lead to "fare evasion" being committed as ticket collectors dont have the time to check everyones tickets while operating the doors at each station and freeloaders disembark. Even Auckland has the "swipe the card and board" system - just how wellington hasnt adopted it yet even though they promised it in 2012 for use by 2017? FDIK.

Smartcard systems often take a long time to implement and have lots of teething issues. Sydney had a false start and started again a few years later from scratch, and Melbourne has spent years ironing out bugs with Myki. However it is remarkable how long it's taken Wellington! From a railfan point of view I do like the little colourful cardboard tickets in Wellington though.
