I volunteered once, but they had asked for volunteers 2 times before-first time I went over and asked how much they were offering: $250 in debit cards. Second time they asked for volunteers, $500. Third time they offered $750 per person-I was flying with my husband and two children 😂 I told them I would also need lounge access or food vouchers for my kids and they went for it-$3000 paid for our round trip flights and hotel costs 🎉

When my family and I were flying to India from JFK with Emirates they overbooked our evening flight. They asked our family to take a flight 12 hours later (next morning) and they would adjust our connecting flight from Dubai to Hyderabad. They offered to pay for hotel and food for that night. We were okay with that and were about to leave. Since we already checked in some bags with some essentials, we asked to get our bags back for a little, and their manager came back with our bags. She apologized for the inconvenience, and not only upheld the offer of paying for our hotels, but also gave us free travel vouchers from JFK to India that was valid for another year, but since the gap between our two flights was longer (layover) they paid for us to take a tour during our 8 hour layover with a hotel and food. They also covered the cost of our checked bags on the way there and were overall really friendly. My mom always said that when you treat people kindly, they’ll treat you kindly back and this was an amazing act of generosity. We got to go to India for free the year later and that was amazing to see our family. We are lifetime customers of Emirates since then!

Actually it feels illegal not to know. Not volunteering information is one thing. Customers having to do research like this because the airline is going to outright lie to their faces is another. I don't know; purposely misleading a person in order to take for yourself money or possessions that rightfully belong to them... It fits just a little too well with videos I've seen on other channels giving tips on defending against scammers that prey on travelers.

It’s not fun when your luggage goes on a world tour without you. I have a couple bags that have been to more countries than I have…and the most impressive part was they somehow got to Europe from a 2 hour domestic flight in the US 😅. The airline compensated me for hygiene and clothing items I needed to buy due to my luggage getting lost, and when they delivered my bags 2 weeks later, they also delivered postcards from every country and city the bags visited 😂

I have definitely used the baggage reimbursement negotiation. In my case, they accidentally routed my checked back to Virginia instead of Nevada and I was going to be without it for a week as I was heading out on a backpacking trip. Unfortunately, I had a lot of communal gear for my group and all of the food. As a result, they paid to replace everything, but offered a mix of cash and flight credit that was the same value of my belongings. A good practice is to have a list of the common items you pack for trips and their values. Any value not covered by the airline may be covered with a travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Chase provided an additional amount to cover a few other items that I then had to buy to make up the difference in value. The biggest downside was that I then had to travel with two full backpacks of backpacking gear on my return flight and had to find a place to store all the extra camping equipment! With the overnight delay, this definitely works. I was delayed due to a tornado in Raleigh Durham once and they covered a 1st class upgrade, overnight hotel voucher, food vouchers, and the transfers to and from the airport. The guy before me was shocked because all they gave him was a hotel voucher and I explained that you have to ask for it and the nicer you can be about it all, the more likely the airline will help you without a fuss or extra hurdles like talking to their customer care phone number.

I had a situation recently about that. The flight was canceled and according to their rules... Which i read... In those cases, they should give snacks and/or hotel accommodations, yet they refused saying it is not airline fault, but weather, but to me that is an open excuse... That could be used for bullshit reasons to avoid paying... Like for example, the pilot for my flight, got drunk last night, woke up late, got late to the flight prior to mine, which delayed that arrival at the airport i am waiting for my flight. So that delays my flight arrangements... And "weather on origin.. We won't pay snacks or hotel"...

On a flight from Singapore via Bangkok to Copenhagen, in the early 80's, my new suitcase with wheels, bought in Singapore (for one reason, to pack 4 framed artworks = expensive!). The artwork was well packed, so I was not afraid it would be damaged, but, after getting my suitcases, my new one was damaged, two of the wheels was bashed into the suitcase. I headed to the desk and asked to be reembursed for the damages to my suitcase, and did show the receipt of purchase of where/when and the cost, and I have never had that good service before, and I got a new suitcase, which also cost more than what I paid for. SAS was my favourite airlines after this! The new suitcase did not have wheels, but I was pleased... still got that suitcase, Samsonite. Good quality! Had it for over 40 yrs, and maybe my grandkids may use it... 😊

My husband and I had a TAP flight from Germany to Portugal last year. They overbooked the flight and didn't let us on, were rude to us, and wouldn't even talk to us. Later, we were bumped to a flight the next day with free meals and overnight stay, but hey, I knew that wasn't enough. While the staff was too rude and unhelpful to explain our rights as passengers, I Googled and discovered we were eligible for a 400EUR compensation per person, which we did get eventually after a series of emails and phone calls.

Some hacks here depends on the airline and what you paid. For luggage, for example, not all of them have that kind of things if you didn´t pay for the travel insurance. For volunteers, I see this very frequently for flights to Venezuela using copa in holiday season. There are not many airlines that flight to there, so they´re always overbooked, and usually they offer amazing compensation packages (good hotels and all expenses paid) for you to volunteer. The reason of offering these very good deals is also because no one wants to volunteer (All passagers are usually venenzuelan people who wants to spend christmas with their family. No one gives up on that no matter how good the deal looks like), so of course, they make it very appealing.

What I also found out is that sometimes these are the airlines own rules that they stipulate that they have to follow, but they just won't volunteer the information to you. You have to find it and ask for it. But it is surprisingly not something they are forced to do. Sometimes it is, but most times it's not. They set these guidelines for themselves to entice people to fly with them. It's kind of like when you read the fine print they are saying "See, if something goes wrong we take care of you better than the other guys". And they won't back out on their promise but, they will only give them out if you read the fine print and ask for them.

My guess is that many agents would push back and say "we can't do it" because they don't know all the rules that benefit passengers well enough... or are the type that can't be bothered. I don’t know if they still do, because I haven’t gone anywhere for years now, but I used to travel several times a year for fun, and I always used to book one way tickets for round trips, especially when flying with WestJet, because they leave from my airport 5 minutes away. And that’s actually kind of how their booking system worked. You did one way, and then you did your return, and they weren’t considered a round trip together. I don’t like being stuck or not being able to change my mind about when I might want to leave, so it’s easier to change the one way return than to try to change the return flight booking portion of your round trip. It’s like always having an “out”, lol. And it is almost always cheaper.

Another booking tip - as we all know, sometimes you can't get a direct flight between two airports. You can use this to your advantage. When you are booking a direct flight, check if your destination is used as a connection to another airport, then book to that airport with a long layover. You can go to two places for the price of one, or something close to that. Usually, the layover will be short, but you can do an advanced search and set it up yourself. I've been on flights with 40-day layovers. 🙂

  • @carultch

    @carultch

One risk you take with hidden city ticketing, is that the airline has no obligation to take you to your connecting airport. They only need to take you to your final destination according to your booking. The airline could reassign your connecting hub, possibly due to factors beyond their control, and you'll ever get to the connecting hub you really intended as your destination.

Here in the Republic of Ireland, if the flight cancels or delays, apparently accordeing to the news over here, you are entitled to be repaid for whatever you booked during the holiday that you missed out on. For example, if you missed a day, the airline would have to pay not only for your accommodation and food and taxi, ect, while you are stuck at the airport, but also the day at the hotel that you would have stayed at, along with anything else you had booked that day, like theme park tickets for example. Which makes a lot on sense BTW. You booked things, and prepaid for them, and presumably can't get that refunded, because of the airline not fulfilling it's side on the contract. Remember, you booking a flight on a plane is you making a contract with the airline that they will fly you to your destination at a certain date and time. If they do not fulfill their side of that agreement, by flying you at that date and time then that's a breech of contract. Again, check the laws in whatever country you are from and don't take what I heard on the news here in Ireland for definite.

Ireland would fall under the EU regulations, which are the most generous in the world, but it is not as generous as claimed, and would depend on things like how long the delay was, and the cause of the delay. The airline is not required to compensate you for anything that you may have booked and missed because of a delay or cancellation, you would need travel insurance for that.

When I flew to Korea a few years ago I flew out of Vancouver and the cost of gas to and from there, parking for 8 days at the airport, and my flight was $150-$200 dollars cheaper than the cost of gas to SeaTac and a flight. This isn't always true, my flight to Germany was cheaper out of SeaTac but it's worth taking the extra few minutes to search both airports.

Also its just kinda rude to do. Someone else could be on that flight that you know you wont need, not to mention then the airlines flies with one less passenger that they could have gotten.

I recently went on a flight with American to Vancouver through Dallas. Our flight was delayed 3 times which caused us to miss our connecting flight. American paid for our hotel for the night, cabs to and from the airport, and 2 meal vouchers. This happens so much in Dallas that they set up a permanent area to print out the vouchers and book the hotel rooms for people. 😮 Also Dallas failed to load our luggage onto our new flight. We were immediately boarding a 7 night Alaskan cruise when we landed in Vancouver so the baggage desk in Vancouver told us we could file a claim. We boarded the cruise with NO LUGGAGE and did not have a port day for 3 days, so we could only buy clothes on the cruise ship…..which were not cheap even though we didn’t push it. They are reimbursing us for all of it! 🎉

That surprises me from American. We flew them to the Bahamas and both ways each flight was delayed so it took 2 days down and two days back. Our original flights were NOT over nights so this doubled our travel time each way. They offered nothing, rebooked us with connections that we would never be able to make and then blamed whoever booked the original flights, it was a huge cluster. So we had to pay for hotels both ways and meals. They offered us 150.00 voucher and that was after telling me they don’t usually give reimbursement for things like this. Not the first time they have screwed us out of time and money. Will never fly them again.

The problem with booking separate tickets (at least that I've found), is that the airline becomes less liable for a cancelled flight as part of a layover, because they've no longer ruined the "whole journey", as the layover country becomes the "home location", and they don't have to provide accommodation. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because that's what I was told

I must be owed 10s of thousands of dollars from United and a few other airlines for the number of times my flight has been delayed (generally) including a time when they held me at the airport in phoenix until 2am then bussed me (about an hour) to a very ordinary hotel where I was supposed to get breakfast but they said I had to be ready to leave by 6 am to return to the airport to try for replacement flights. And my baggage has been delayed 5 or 6 times too, the worst being when they shipped it to me but their courier expected an $80 tip (so I had to pay cos United lost my bag). Airlines are like so many corporations, politicians and employment agencies: knowingly offer misleading promises and hugely failing on delivery.
