Flight Review - American Airlines Business Class from London Heathrow to Boston

Crossing the Atlantic is an inevitable part of any tier point run to the USA, and as part of this tun I decided to try American Airlines. Done enough BA club suite reviews lately....
So after the usual American Airlines schedule changes after booking, I ended up on a 10am flight from Heathrow to Boston. That gives you some excellent lounges to choose from before boarding, and as it turned out some excellent service once aboard...

Probably worth saying too that AA has two different business class layouts on their 777-200ERs. The other version, with strange Concept D alternating back and front-facing seats, was badly enough received by users that AA changed mid-refresh to these more appealing seats and standard reverse herringbone layout. There's about a 50/50 split of the two types in the -200ER fleet and no way to know which you'll get in advance as they are both shown this way on the booking site. Their -300ERs all have this conventional layout but with Safran Cirrus II seats, which if memory serves were quite similar to these Super Diamonds. Great review.

Evening Matt, great watch. Outcome was far better than I had anticipated when I watched the intro, food looked solid. I also note AA seems to be the only airline to offer Disaronno, which personally would’ve always been a nice option when I’ve flown on other carriers, so a +1 there for me personally! Very intrigued to watch your video on this tier point run’s overall cost considering the great value on this leg, LHR-DUB-LHR-BOS-LAX and back? Appreciate the feedback on the questions earlier too. I've just discovered your channel and it's great. I haven't been on an aircraft for over 20 years but in the late 80s and early 90s I travelled frequently to the Southern US with work. In those days most southern US destinations were served by BA out of Gatwick using DC10s! I accumulated a pile of Airmiles - now Avios - from that time which I've kept ticking over to prevent them evaporating but I've had no idea what to do with them as each time I looked there didn't appear to be very good value to be had. Having binged a number of your videos I can see now how I might better play the system to get more out of them. Suitably inspired I'm looking at possible trips. So thanks for that and I look forward to more reviews and hints/tips. Being an analytical minded person I too would be interested in the research/booking process as mentioned in the previous comment.

I've yet to experience AA Buss Class but travelled with them pre-Covid in PE; the seats were good but the crew were rude and nonchalant and service/food very mediocre. It was also a struggle to get my points credited to BA. However, never say never...... I'm travelling BA Club World for the first time in August LHR-JFK., PE on the return at the moment and hoping for an upgrade on points nearer the time. I'm looking forward to trying the new suites. Another class video, Matt. It's fast becoming a regular fixture of my Sunday afternoon youtubering. Totally agree that AA cabin crew can be hit and miss. I've had truly excellent service on, iirc, DFWLHR and LAXKOA. The later was particularly memorable for a very heartfelt, and embarrassed, apology for the terrible state of the fittings, with the foam lining quite obviously choosing to distance itself from the tube. Being a gentleman, I did offer to stick it back together for her if she had any glue to hand, but she demurred. I'm pretty sure that your mysterious L is the standard 3-4-3 lettering scheme ABC-DEFH-JKL used to make equipment change less troublesome. But I strongly suspect this was a jest from such a seasoned traveler as yourself, yes? I'm not a great fan of BOS-LON/LON-BOS for overnight flights: it's far too short for any more than a few hours shuteye which always leaves me more tired than nothing at all. But it does combine nicely with BOS-JFK for a bunch of TPs at minimal cost, as long as you take your overnight in LON rather than trying to do it in BOS where the hotels are either frighteningly expensive, far from the airport, or, in most cases, both. I've messed this up with a forthcoming trip and have a 2300 arrival and an 0530 departure, which leaves me with little choice but to man up and tough it out until the AA lounge opens at 0400. Unless AA have another sched change to offer up for my approval, of course. Austin Powers though? In public too...

It's that or $400 for the TWA...

Thanks for this Matt, it is good to see the alternatives. The B&O headphones looked miles better than the plasticky BA set and It was good to hear the quality of the food onboard was high. Sadly, my experience on our Cape Town trip the other week with BA was that the food we had was a bit hit and miss. Both flights were night flights, both full in Club and both main meals tasted over-cooked in places and both breakfasts were not that enjoyable at all, again over-cooked, especially the scrambled eggs / omelette which was as tough as old boots. I came away from the flights thinking that my expectations of a premium experience were maybe a little too high. I found the centre isle diamond seat on the outbound good with lots of cubby holes but the ying yang of the return was not good. Who thought up the idea that stepping over a sleeping fellow passenger was a good idea, and how do the elderly or infirm manage it? Was happy with everything except staff, the flight attendant on my friends side (we sat in the middle seats) was attentive and sweet (which my friend throughly enjoyed rubbing in my face the entire flight), on my side, I felt like it would’ve been the same as if she strangled a puppy on Christmas. 😬 She ruined anything that was positive on that flight. And felt I needed to apologize for ruining her day with our existence. We flew BA CW (old seats) back and the service there made up for anything that might have been inferior to AA (which I feel there wasn’t, but if there was ). Hi Daddy Matt! My Royal Jordanian status expires next month and I've decided to try my hand with the BA system for my next status run. I would have to find a way to squeeze in 4 BA/Iberia flights during my visit to Europe next month and if not, I would have to try again before April next year. My strategy here in the US is to basically book as many inexpensive AA and/or Alaska segments in Economy and then upgrade them to First Class on check-in. That'll earn me 40 points a segment, and I'll occasionally do up to 4 segments in a day. Oh well, I've got some time!

Great video Matt, as always! I didn't realise that entrée does not mean main meal, always learning from your videos! Obviously it's not possible to know for sure how full/empty a flight may be, but I was wondering what you thought would be better in terms of "value", which is of course hard to define! A business seat on this flight at standard price, or a virtually empty economy cabin seat with a full row to yourself at around £500?

Entrée is entrance in French which is the starter when you enter a meal. The Americans use it differently! Its always perplexed me.... This was part of an 8 leg trip so I was in business whatever happened but I'm a skinflint so cheap is good! And if cheap in economy on an empty plane means 3 or 4 seats to spread out on? Fantastic!

You can add a frequent flyer number at any time up until boarding the plane so certainly try at the airport, although they may struggle if there's something up with the names.... Perhaps call BA and see if they can see what is up? It works for 99% of people so there must be something unusual about your name or the way it is stored. Another option is to leave the Frequent Flyer number blank when flying then claim when you get home. I think they give you 6 months after travel to do this. Sadly if a flight has credited to one scheme you can't cancel it and repost it elsewhere
