FLEX Foam-IT! softness TEST with samples
A while ago i was searching ytube for videos like this one to help me choose the right product for each project. Written specs can only help you to one point when you are a beginner.
Here is my contribution to the community.
THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL TEST!
Please refer to www.smoth-on.com for detailed product info.

Your video was extremely helpful and thorough, I have no idea why they don’t do something like this themselves or link your video on their site. Thank you
This is truly the most useful video on the internet. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for making this comparison video. This is very, very helpful in understanding the differences in the FlexFoam iT product line.
Thank you for showcasing the softness of each product and added comments, it truly helped me from just wasting money on trial and error.
What a helpful video. Thank you so much for helping me to figure out which one I need.
This is very useful info! I was looking at all the different foams on Amazon but had no idea which one I needed until now. I am repairing part of the foam seat cushion on my BMW. Need to repair disintegrated portions of the sides that project out to support side to side movement. It needs to be rigid enough to hold shape but not too soft like most foam. It appears the #14 is the best match. Thanks so much. The seat foam cushion itself is made up of different density foam combined together in the same mold. Typical BMW over engineering that works so well.

Thank you! 14 might be the right one. Remember that for all foam castings you will need a mold or some kind of pressure padding bcs it expands and does not form a 'skin' if not compressed. Have fun! ;-)
Thanks this was exactly what I needed to see. Definitely helped me decide which to get.
Thank you so much for this. I really, really agonize over deciding what materials to use when I'm just starting a new project. This is really helpful.
This was super helpful in finalizing my choice of foam for an upcoming product. Thanks!

Perfect! Exactly what I needed to see, thank you! You would think Smooth on would have this exact demo on their site.
That's very helpful, thanks a lot!
Thanks very much. Super helpful.
Great helpful video
Thank you, you just saved me a 6 hour drive to Reynolds’s advanced materials so I could do the same sort of testing
Great content
Very helpful! Cheers
Thank you!
Wonderful presentation - you helped me a lot in choosing the right material, thank you! It seems foam it 6 doesn't enjoy being poked a lot:) and the comment about trying being smacked with 17 made me ROFL :) Wishing you all the best, Ivan from Sofia, Bulgaria!

Thanks!
Thanks for the video, this is the first one I’ve found that gives me some idea of the differences. Previously I have been scanning videos for each product separately. Any suggestion on what you would use for casting thighs and hips to fill a grappling dummy bag? Need to maintain hip support of bent legs in supine position.

Thank you! I had the same struggle and that is why i made this video, to help others. I think ff25 with metal wire “bones” but i have no exp with prostetics or similar..
Oh wow, this could be super usefull for animation. I wonder if you could sculpt it after pouring? Or cut it with a heated wire.

Well, all those foams form a “skin” for further processing, like painting. Probably even clay with propper impregnation ( never tried it). I would not recommend cutting it. Again, it has a “skin” on the outside but inside is just spongy and cutting it with hotwire could release toxic fumes…
Excellent video! Can you tell me if different ones key to each other if you were to cast them in layers? Specifically does X stick to 8 Pillow Soft? Thanks in advance.

Yes, they will stick to each other if you don’t use release agent. Layering expanding foams is hard, you will have to mold each layer. Unlike urethane plastic and rubber, foams expand and the end result is not a flat surface. Hope it helps
Thanks! I'm going to make a cushion for a car seat. Whitch is best for that do you think?

Jon Sigurdsen i would say it’s: 6 pillow soft. Never casted it but they advertise it as for making cusions and such..
Thanks so much for the video! I'm going to be casting a pair of actual (not prop) flip flops for myself, so initially I thought I should use the densest/most durable (25), but also keeping weight in mind, do you think the 17 would be suitable or too too soft for that application? To make the question more open-ended, would you rather wear a flip flop made from 17 or 25 and why? Thanks again for the video, it's hard to get a "feel" for the different products without actually feeling them.

Which one would you compare to auto cushion foam. I have an application where I would like to cast the bottom cushion to an antique automobile.
@rogiprops1811

I would say 14. It is soft but dense. Others would be too soft. You might want second opinion from someone who has more exp in that line of work.
Very nice, thank you. What type of foam do you recomend for bicycle seat?
@rogiprops1811

I’m not sure.. There is one type of foam that is used for paddings and stuff.. You can check it on their official site. Maybe no. 7
This was so helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to make this!
Great video! Were the samples made yourself, or did Smooth-On send you samples? I'm curious as I am searching for samples similar to these for a research project. Thanks!

Nice video. Which foam would you recommend for making a stress ball?
@pablospacebar9527
6 ай бұрын
I would say 17 but it really depends on your strenght. It is probably way chepaer if you go and buy it than to make it tbh. I use black tac (sticky stuff) 2cm ball.
Can you recommend which would be the best for making squishies? Thank you for the video. It’s good to see a comparison.

Thanks for this video man! Is pillow soft number 8 denser than pillow soft number 6?
@rogiprops1811
3 жыл бұрын
Yes 8 is denser than 6 but for tiny bit. 8 is 194 cu. in/lb and 6 is 208. Im not exactly sure bcs im not using any of those. Mostly im using 3, 10, 14, 17, 25
I wonder if any of these could be used to make sponges 🧽
How to make poron foam please? Can it be done with liquids?

Which would you recommend for casting seat cushions?

6 and 8 for softer versions and 7 for harder ones. That’s what they feel like and also what the manufacturer recommends

@@rogiprops1811 Thanks! I'm restoring a '64 X-KE. I wish to keep the interior looking basically original, but the stock seats are BACK BREAKERS. I expect to sculpt a master and cast better padding. 'Haven't used expanded foam, before.

Can this foam be poured in a clay mold ? Thanks
@pablospacebar3633
Жыл бұрын
Its very strong when expanding. I had to use plywood to clamp down silicon mold so it doesnt deform the mold.. not sure about clay. Definitely not soft clay, maybe dry.
