Great reaction. People often overlook early Fleetwood Mac, which is a real shame. Early songs like “Black Magic Woman” with Peter green are great. Also the song “Oh Well”.

WOW! I hardly ever see anyone reacting to earlier FLEETWOOD MAC songs; so glad you hit this BOB WELCH era stuff. Welch was responsible for bringing Fleetwood Mac to Los Angeles where they would eventually find Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. And YES you should listen to FLEETWOOD MAC’s SENTIMENTAL LADY; it’s longer and more fleshed out than Welch’s pop music version. Funny thing is, he’s got Fleetwood Mac members singing background in that pop version too…there’s more of this too.

This was Fleetwood Mac, "The transition years." Peter Green was gone, somewhere after suffering a horrible mental breakdown, after someone spiked his drink with LSD, and basically kidnapped him, the night before a concert in Germany. A very sad and frightening story. a couple of years later, Fleetwood Mac underwent a change in not just members of the Band, but the style of music. The original Fleetwood Mac with the great Peter Green (referenced above) Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, was a Blues band started in 1967 or 68. Then they added Christie McVie, wife of John McVie (Bassist) . Then a few later, they changed again. This time, adding the struggling American singer/songwriting duo of Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham, who were playing Bars and small venues in Los Angles. That was when Fleetwood Mac hit gold. With Buckingham, and the two girls added to the Band in the mid 70s, Fleetwood Mac went on to be maybe the most popular Rock Band of the 70s. I still really love the original Fleetwood Mac from the 60s, when they were a great Blues Band. Thanks Harri

Rolling Stone Magazine said: ”Ironically, in the digital-music era, it isn’t easy to hear that work. The five studio albums Welch made with Fleetwood Mac - Future Games (1971), Bare Trees (1972), Penguin and Mystery to Me (both 1973) and Heroes Are Hard to Find (1974) - are still in print on CD but not available on Spotify or iTunes.” WHAT A SHAME!!!

  • @Ou81gi812

    @Ou81gi812

This is the complete Rolling Stone article: After ex-Fleetwood Mac singer-guitarist Bob Welch died on June 7th, by his own hand at his home in Nashville, his boss in the early Seventies, drummer and Mac co-founder Mick Fleetwood, paid tribute to Welch and his time in the group. “He was a huge part of our history which sometimes gets forgotten,” Fleetwood said in a statement. “If you look into our musical history, you’ll see a huge period that was completely ensconced in Bob’s work.” Ironically, in the digital-music era, it isn’t easy to hear that work. The five studio albums Welch made with Fleetwood Mac - Future Games (1971), Bare Trees (1972), Penguin and Mystery to Me (both 1973) and Heroes Are Hard to Find (1974) - are still in print on CD but not available on Spotify or iTunes. Welch had a Top Ten solo hit in 1977 with a remake of Bare Trees‘ “Sentimental Lady,” and he returned to his Mac book in the last decade, cutting new versions of his songs from that period on records such as 2006’s Greatest Hits and More. But the “history,” as Fleetwood put it, is elusive without reason.

I have a real-life experience and am now hesitant to talk about it because everyone thinks I am full of it when I tell it. But I have several witnesses that were with me that night. Believe me, I am not saying there was an alien spaceship in the sky. I am just saying there was a UFO in the sky that night. Our local newspaper reported there were many other people saying they saw the same thing. The truth is out there. As a side note, my experience took place in the summer around 1966.

Everyone tends to mention Bob Welch, and that's fine. But the haunting lead guitar that threads through this and "Miles Away" is played by Bob Weston. And, BTW, "Miles Away" is also great, but this is a pretty awesome album all the way around. It came out around 1973 and you can hear the tropes of that time. College kids (including me) were getting interested in H.P Lovecraft and The Teachings of Don Juan. At around the 3 minute mark, he starts in on the mysteries of H.P. and at 4:35 or so, it seems an obvious reference to Don Juan, by Carlos Castenada. And, McVie's vocals are ridiculously underrated.

Lyrics: [Verse 1] It's the same kind of story That seems to come down from long ago Two friends having coffee together When something flies by their window It might be out on that lawn Which is wide, at least half of a playing field Because there's no explaining What your imagination can make you see and feel [Chorus] Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized [Verse 2] Now it's not a meaningless question To ask if they've been and gone I remember a talk about North Carolina And a strange, strange pond You see the sides were like glass In the thick of a forest without a road And if any man's hand ever made that land Then I think it would've showed [Chorus] That's why it seems like a dream They got me hypnotized I know that's right [Instrumental Interlude with Harmonizing] [Chorus] Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized [Verse 3] They say there's a place down in Mexico Where a man can fly over mountains and hills And he don't need an airplane or some kind of engine And he never will Now you know it's a meaningless question to ask If those stories are right Because what matters most Is the feeling you get when you're hypnotized [Outro] Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized Yeaaaaahhhh, that's when, that's when they got you hypnotized Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized Seems like a dream Seems like a dream They got me hypnotized

Rumours was the album that changed Fleetwood Mac from a blues band to a pop band at which time I stopped listening to them for a few years and just stuck with the older stuff with Peter Green's guitar and voice and Christine Perfect whom I had enjoyed since her years with Chicken Shack, a band I actually preferred to Fleetwood Mac. Through repeated exposure due to younger friends thinking this was the music my generation like, something they had that would appeal to the oldie, I eventually grew to find the later stuff listenable though never matching the original Fleetwood Mac in appeal for me. They gave us the original Black Magic Woman and Need Your Love So Bad along with some other classics and Christine Perfect sang a version of I'd Rather Go blind on her solo album that became the definitive one for me. No disrespect to Etta James who just got better as she got older.

Fleetwood Mac had three phases. First was the raw blues and rock that Peter Green was responsible for. Then by the album "Kiln House" they started to change into the second phase (which included Bob Welch) and had a smooth rock sound. THe third and final phase was the group with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks who appeared after the album "Heroes Are Hard To Find.". The early raw blues albums by Fleetwood Mac are the best to me.

Fleetwood Mac before the Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham pop era, when Fleetwood Mac was at their best, the Fleetwood Mac I grew up with, starting with this song and later "Kiln House". They became more popular in their pop version, but declined in quality and brilliance. I was a sophomore in high school when this came out, and I fell in love with this group. The addition of Christine McVie really added to the group. I was in a garage band a year later and we added "Tell Me All the Things You Do" to our repertoire. It was such a great dance song.

Awesome Harri. This is a great favorite of mine. I love the mysteriousness of it. About your comments ... The band went through various lineup changes but, basically, it was floating off into obscurity after Bob Welch left. At that time, the rest of the group was made up by Bob Weston, Christine McVie (keyboards), John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood. Bob Weston left the group at the end of 1973 after having an affair with Mick Fleetwood's wife, and this left them completely guitarist-less. So, they asked Lindsey Buckingham to join, and he insisted that Stevie come along. She already had a couple of good songs to bring, so they agreed. Anyway, that's how we got to the Fleetwood Mac that you know.

What I really love about this song it the non wavering drum beat. No fills,no changes. I feel like this would take some serious stamina to play so steady without fills. I can only assume this has something to do with the title, because the beat is very hypnotic. I love driving at night with this playing on the radio. I hear the song is about extraterrestrials, but it has a bit of a Carlos Castaneda influence because it was written during a time when his books were quite popular.

Funny you said Revelation. Revelation is another Welch era track. Also Bermuda Triangle is a good one. There is a Welch era track called Why with Christine McVie singing which is really good too.

Harri- excellent choice. If you listen closely, you can hear Mick Fleetwood's drumming, a strong guitar and Chrissy Perfect (McVie)'s wonderful backing vocals. Yes, Bob Welch wrote this, but this was a terrific song that led into the Stevie Nicks era Fleetwood Mac. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever performed. I love it. I see that you have published another great song - From The Beginning by ELP - Sir....you are on fire! Ken

Based on the Carlos Castaneda books of the Yaqui sorcerer and teacher, Don Juan. And Carlos undergoing an apprenticeship under Don Juan. If you want to experience or learn about the spiritual realm, read the books.

It's good to see somebody go back to the pre Lindsey and Stevie days of the Mac. Now go all the way back to the Peter Green Blues days. Need your love so bad, Albatross, Lookin' for somebody, there's alot to choose from. Great reaction here.

It's about being in a theta state of mind. Theta waves are strong during internal focus, meditation, prayer, and spiritual awareness. Also hallucinogenic tripping could be what he's singing about in the verse; way down in Mexico flying over mountains and hills. ✌

The song is about Carlos Castaneda, Peruvian-born American author who studied with a Yaqui Indian shaman using the natural drug cactus peyote which is a hallucinogen. He ended up writing an entire series of books about this experience.

I like to say FM are 3 of my favorite bands, because I like all 3 eras, but this is the version when I "discovered" them, and will always be my favorite with either the 2 Bobs or Welch and Kirwan.. Check out Paris, Bob's very heavy group he formed when he left FM.

So nice to hear a reaction to pre-Nicks and Buckingham Fleetwood Mac. I always enjoyed the work that Bob Welch did. He actually formed a power trio (called Paris) after he left Fleetwood Mac. It was pretty hardcore. They made 2 albums, that were pretty good but not commercially successful. He then embarked on a relatively successful solo career.

In the 80's there was a series of books written about Mexican shamanic teachers by Carlos Castaneda -The Teachings of Don Juan, The Journey to Ixtlan, and A Separate Reality. if you read those books the meaning of the song becomes crystal clear.
