Absolute gold. Years of chasing the Flea, but instead should just have followed the Josh. This video is only 8 minutes of content, but worth months of lessons. Imagine, by this pattern you could be easily seen as the next best Flea by hundreds of drunk members in the audience 😁

You have the best sounding bass out of all the KZreadrs. Some are way too quiet, some try to get too fancy with effects for a teaching setting. Yours is just done correctly. Thank you for that.

I'm 44 now, and became a "student" of Flea when I was a mere 14. Learned everything Chili Peppers at the time and anything else that tickled fancy. I picked up slap bass so fast. It's not that difficult if you have the passion. It's trick playing. The real trick comes with making music better with your playing, and that requires being discernative.
OMG~ Your humor was turned up to 11 on this one. Loved the patterns you went over. Nothing makes me happier and feeling the bass rhythm and groove than percussive playing. Callouses on my callouses indeed. Another great video. And, who knew that Flea actually owned a shirt 🤣🤯
Josh, I watched your videos when I first started bass. I love all your beginner focused content. You made me feel encouraged and prepared to try. This video is exceptional. It's a perfect chunk of lesson. Thanks for this.
A late friend of mine gifted me the DVD that this was clipped from when I first started playing bass many moons ago , that's awesome you found this - it's a classic and was super illuminating for learning slap drills and attack heavy riffs . Cheers and thank you for contributing content !
I like you put classic flea bassline each section
That’s awesome I’ve finally found a famous bass player that uses the bone of his thumb like I do for my quadruple thumb technique
Thank you so so much Josh! For all your videos and especially for the "Beginner to Badass" course. Two years ago it helped me to start :)

You're welcome Pavel, glad you enjoyed the course!
Growing up as a suburban skater kid in the 80s and 90s Flea was my introduction to slap bass and his technique strongly influenced mine although over the years has morphed with countless new influences
Thanks to you and Flea, my bass playing just changed forever.
This is the best slapping video I've ever seen
I’m just about to start the slap section of the B2B course, so this is perfect timing. Plus I never knew Flea owned a shirt. If it’s used, I wonder if he got it from a…flea market? 🤔
The entertainment is perfectly sprinkled throughout the video. And you've held that fine balance for quite some time now which is impressive because it's easy to overdo it once you realise the audience enjoys it! Hats off!!
Love your vids! They helped me learn bass. Are you planning to do a bass pedal/pedal board video?

dope. Luv how you teach people to make it their own
I like your light hearted comedy videos that often feature content about the bass guitar. Good stuff Josh.
This was an instant save to my learning playlist. I play bass in a metal band so I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to pull out a fast slap fill, but one can dream. Awesome teaching as always Josh!

I learned that pattern/exercise (and a few other) from his instructional video back in 1995. Great video.
Wow, what a great lesson! I'm quite the amateur, but man this took me to a whole new level fast! Definitely earned a sub from me.

Haha yup it's an ongoing practice!
Fun fact: using your pinky to finger 2 frets up isn't just conserving energy, it is actually how you would finger the same thing in an orchestral setting. F# in 1st position is your third finger on an electric but your 4th finger on an upright bass
1:47 still gonna try this with my flat tapewound strings... I just put them on yesterday. we'll see how it goes... excellent video, thank you!
daaaaaaaaaamn 30s in and my mind is already blown listening to his blazing slap speed!

Thanks Josh and Flea I tend to make harder than it should be I have 77P bass 93pj 01 stingray still cood not play slap funk good. this helped me so much, by the way you see the time line in each of those gutiars each time I send this is the one.

I needed this lmao
The only cool bass trick I can do is a fast TTP slap in the middle of a bassline and double-finger pops which is kinda like popping a power chord. I miss the days when I had the energy and time to play more.
Always wanted to play like Flea.
you know your stuff. Thank our.
Awesome chop I tried to slap & when I popped it was difficult to build speed because as my thumb bounced up I tried to pop in one motion I can see the value the thump strikes root note and the octave pop implies tonality and then you can get funky with the fifths or the blue note !
Nice data for begginers, i really wish i had this when i first tried to learn to slap, it would have made things far easy :D
Excellent

SO FUN TO PLAY
So much good stuff here... You can see in his videos that Victor Wooton often uses his 4th finger when doing octaves. Maybe always - I haven't listened to everything he does. I'm going to say that may be a player preference thing.

Once Buckethead participated at bass slapping competition ( i think it was in LA) and won. Flea was also there and lost from not even a bass player.
That video of Flea teached me how to slap. Im still an amateur, but at least I sound cool.
Great take on how to make flea work with your own groves. Noticed you have the Ray 4 which I have; Do you like it better than Yamaha TRBX 304? Thinking about trading in my 5 String Shire V7, it is just to much for me as a beginner. I am taking you your class as well. It's fantastic.
crackle in the electronics can be cured with a few sprays of electronics cleaner. I just had the same issue.
Every time i listen to old RHCP i always think to myself “Wut happened??” there newer stuff isn’t a 1/10th as good as songs like “Sikamikanico”
Always wanted to learn slap bass but never figured out how to set up the bass for it.
