Flathead fishing in the South East Trawl Fishery- Danish Seining

Комедия

This video was created, shot and edited by Alex Inwood.
Let's join Skipper Ant and deckies Alfie and Buzzy on a beautiful day off Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia as they fish for flathead.
Watch the video (or click the time stamps below) to see the Danish seine fishing method from start to finish, plus some scientific data collection to support the management of the fishery and stock assessments. Don't miss the seal scouting around for a free lunch.
3:21 haul begins
5:35 net in sight
6:00 cod-end in sight
6:45 fur seal turns up for free feed
8:05 fish being graded (size classes) into bins before being iced for market
9:04 scientific data for stock assessment being collected: fish measured, sexed, ear bones (otoliths) collected for ageing
11:00 undersized flathead released alive

Not crazy about the music. But that water is absolutely gorgeous! Perfect weather unless it was too hot. Good videography too! I've never seen surveyors removing otoliths so quick and easily. I suck at getting them out in decent condition. Survey dude might not be wild about it, but incidental catch is my favorite part. You never know what's gonna come up from the depths! Nor how tasty it just might be when gulped down right there on deck. 😜

hello lex I just wanted to say that the rules for trawl fishing are strictly strict. and all fish can not be caught on line fishing alone. but I agree with you that there is more we can do and reduce by-catch. with me who is a fisherman i know what i'm talking and i think it's very stupid when we get some fish and it can happen. but as the rules say in Norway, when we get over 15% small fish, we have to move the boat.

As for by catch find a better way, there is none. If you make the mesh size any bigger, the fishermen go bust. Fine if your a tree hugger, not so fine if your his family.

Why do you have to take wild fish when offshore culture exists with much better quality of fish species available?

Interesting... but I have no idea about any of it except for the title... "flathead" ... and I have my own taste of music, so I stopped my music and checked the video volume 6 times to see.... no talking or info about nothing... just the music I dislike..... no thank you... I'll watch a vid that tells me a bit about deepwater fishing I know nothing about, but that interests me....
