Flatbed Truck Island Adventure Tonoas, Micronesia | Nomad Docs

We visit our friend's house on the small island of Tonoas to perform an eye screening. We are treated to a lovely tour of the island by flatbed truck, visiting highlights such as the island jail, the electricity plant, fellow villagers, and a local store. Tonoas is just a quick 15-minute boat ride from where we stayed on Weno, and already it felt like its own world away from modernity. We visited on Sunday, which we learned is a day for relaxing on the lawn with friends and family - island living!
Tonoas was a headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. The Japanese name for the island was Natsu Shima (or Natsushima), which means "Summer Island." A narrow single-lane track rings the island, allowing land access to the small villages (Nechap, Kuchua, Sangku, Enin, Yongku, and others).
