Flat Earther & Things Made for Us | Victor - Brooklyn, NY | Atheist Experience 22.08

The Atheist Experience episode 22.08 for March 4, 2018, with Tracie Harris and Callie Wright.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblogs.com/axp/
KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Since it gave zero results at both the solstices and the equinoxes, astronomers and physicists concluded that there was some flaw in the reasoning. Perhaps objects shrank as they were moving forward? Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity explained that, but its expansion to a General Theory predicted "gravity waves", which have been discovered by LIGO installations, Laser Interferometric Gravity-wave Observatories, so sensitive that if the æther had not been dismissed, it would detect the planet's speed of spinning motion, and prove it zero, implying that the Universe revolves round us!

Sad but it's true: I think flat eartherism is stupider; the ancient Greeks devised methods that proved a globe; they keep begging, "Why not TEST it?" when it's been "tested" from here clear around the planet. Didn't some earlier civilization also devise ways to show and know it? Didn't the masts of the ships disappearing last during Columbus' days indicate it was spherical? Doesn't the same thing show it today? Haven't they ever been on a mountain or in a plane? At least creationism is based on imaginary things...a global/flat earth dichotomy is all around us in reality! Dumber to deny real evidence than to imagine some is there but it's being withheld... OK, both dumb, but I think flat earth is dumber.

Look up the Dunning Kruger Effect, it explains how individuals and groups who lack actual knowledge of a subject; mistake their uninformed view of the matter as knowledge, and how the more firmly they hold this view the great to the degree they feel they poses actual knowledge. This covers so many areas we deal with in society, from false views on, the poor and poverty, to superstitions and religion, to political views not founded on fact but on what people think they know. Add to this human xenophobia, and the desire.for control and power; and we have the foundations for much of the social ills with society and around the world. This is why I feel it is important for Atheists to learn the valuable tools of Formal Logic and if possible Symbolic Logic, critical thinking skills, etc, so we might not develop such flawed reasoning as is behind the Dunning Kruger Effect. As we learn more about such aspects of human psychology, I think we will see, religious, spiritual, supernatural, etc, beliefs as far less benign.

They are human too and, largely, react in the same dogmatic way the Atheists in the video reacted with. This is evident by the fact we have large groups of highly qualified scientists and topographers forming independent groups so they can be allowed to verify that Earth's surface doesn't curve in every independently verifiable way imaginable. To see 7 years of such scientific experiments, type in *Convex Earth* and watch the documentary. Every experiment is fully documented, shown step-by-step, and independently verifiable.

Research is the problem. What are they using for their research? You can debate a religious person all day but if they only have their book to research and that book has flaws, they have nothing else. There is no scientific additional material to religion. There is scientific additional material to science all day long. When they say, " the earth is the center and the moon, stars and sun were made for the earth only", that tells me it is religion. That cannot fathom that we are on earth and at this point we can see the moon, stars, sun, etc. How do they know that there isn't some being looking at the same shit we see on some other planet? We are not the end all be all. There are greater beings with more knowledge on another planet that we haven't found. Religion is man made to keep the masses who believe in check.

One of my favorite debunks of flat Earth is how the Earth's shadow casts onto the moon. A sphere is the only object that casts a curve at any angle. If the Earth is flat we would see a thin line shadow once in awhile. Done. You don't need to talk about satellites, curvature, gravity, however obvious those things might be.

Grogery 1 In actuality in the middle ages the Inquisition hunted down flat earthers. Believe it or not the Church was far more smart back then. They praised knowledge and observation and were very, very, very wary of individuals that with no form of knowledge or education started claiming truths to the masses. Things changed radically after the overall populace become better educated and started undermining their overall power so they started reacting more violently. But never in recorder western history after developed scientific civilizations (greeks to say it quickly) we believed the earth was actually flat. Nobody believed columbus because he presented a globe far too small than what the greeks had predicted. And he was actually wrong. Long story short: the church in the would actually be far more sensible than today. One of the pros of the Catholich church is that they embraced the evolution theory, the big bang etc because they are not completely bat shit insane and know that god is something unrelated to a book.

Flat earthers conflate 'moving' and 'acceleration' as essentially the same thing when in fact they are not. When they're sitting in a car travelling at 100 mph they believe they feel the car 'moving'. All their other senses chime in as well, to give them a clear picture of what 'moving' at 100 mph 'feels like' (they include engine sound, relative speed of stationary objects, wind noise, lateral acceleration through turns, etc). These observations don't support the 100mph speedometer reading they see as much as they'd like. The truth is they're only feeling the constantly adjusting values of acceleration. Very little of what they feel, is the result of the speed value on the dial. Driving over a moderate depression in the road at 60mph, results in minor acceleration values in all directions (not just the forward one the car is in). You bounce and sway a bit, as the shocks/struts work to absorb that acceleration. Then as briefly as it began, the bounce/sway subsides... as long as the road ahead is clear and unblemished. By crossing the same depression in the road at greater speed of 120mph, even greater values of acceleration are observed. So therefore, MPH is a 'thing' when considering evidence of 'motion' or 'moving'. Flat earthers are very, very married to this observation. So when astrophysicists tell them the earth is spinning SIXTY times faster than 100MPH, they expect everything they 'feel' at 100 mph to be amplified times sixty! This is where their brains go on strike, critical thought gets voted out, they consume a Jovian, globe-sized glass of Dunning-Kruger and they become the better than the rest of us, 'woke' flat earthers, smug and oh so self-assured. SMH

One popular youtube uses the "my senses tell me the earth is not moving" argument. In a separate "experiment" he brought a level on an airplane as some kind of bizarre "proof" that the earth is flat. I couldn't make it through his video, so I don't know how he reconciles that one doesn't feel motion when sitting on an airplane travelling at 400 mph in non-turbulent air.

I disagree. If you live in Babylon or Kansas the Earth seems remarkably flat. Flat Earth believers do so in defiance of what well travelled people, or those with even a 2500 foot mountain top overlooking a sea (Slieve Donard, Dundrum Bay of the Irish Sea) can actually verify, that the 'flat' sea curves downward at the horizon. Without such enlightenment, the Biblical Flood, originally described in Babylonic cuneiform on baked tablets, is quite plausible. For people enlightened by either the Greek Eratosthenes, two or three hundred years before the Roman destruction of Masada fortress and the Temple in Jerusalem, or even Drake's voyage in the "Golden Hind", it is utterly stupid. The invention of the barometer showed that if the mass of the entire atmosphere were water vapour, there wouldn't be enough to a raise the oceans 10.3 metres. Ice sitting on land and in the mountains is more than that but not enough to rise above where it's sitting!
