    Nice. I’ve been shooting film for over 50 years, but never bought a dedicated flash meter. I had always just guessed and closed down my aperture in anticipation of the flash. My composition and subject distance always took precedence over the exact proper exposure settings for using a flash. I’ve had great luck, but also a few really blown out shots over the years. This is a good video regarding using flash. I suppose I should just bite the bullet and buy a flash meter. Thanks!

    Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. And that might be true about the 1/50th, have to look it up. But the shutter-speed doesn’t really affect the metering from the flash anyways 😭. I would take the SF20, because of the easier buttons and lcd screen and more power. Also I like the look of it, but don’t tell anyone.

  • @Superbustr
    @Superbustr3 ай бұрын

    There is nothing wrong with TTL flash and I highly advocate using it. In certain situations where you simply don't have the time to setup an external flash, and need to shoot quickly, TTL is the way to go. In addition your results with TTL will vary depending on the available metering modes in your camera. My film camera has 1/1000th flash sync speed and was pretty good value compared to the other options on the market. I don't know how anyone could shoot on a camera that has a super low sync speed... you would have to shoot on a tripod with a totally still model, which is just a bit too limiting tbh.

  • @TIPSinc01

    @TIPSinc01

    3 ай бұрын

    There’s definitely nothing wrong with shooting TTL. In my experience it’s just not always a 100% hit. Definitely if something reflects the light a lot. So therefore I like to do things manual, I almost don’t have to think about it so I can be quick. A lot of older film cameras don’t have that fast sync speed, maybe some leave shutter lenses. So it’s nice that you have one! But honestly I think flashing will eliminate a lot of movement and even if there’s some movement it creates some “energy” in the frame. Never really had problems with the slow sync speed of my M6. To each their own of course, everyone has their own way of doing things! 😁

  • @Superbustr

    @@TIPSinc01 I think it depends on the camera. I have one of the most advanced mf film cameras with 5 point spot metering and have had no issues yet with ttl flash. I would recommend that you get at the very least a camera with exposure lock. That way you can use your spot meter to select (exposure-lock) a specific part of the image for TTL mode.

Is the procedure the same? Setting the camera on manual mode and each single flash on manual mode? I'm afraid that all of the light ocming from each flash will overexpose the image thus ruining it because the flashes won't be able to communicate between themselves and auto adjust for power. A few things. It's 1/50th on your sync. Secondly, you can ditch the cord and use even cheaper triggers. Finally, you can always put a diffuser on your flash to lower output. But the best thing is to use a flash meter.

  • @TIPSinc01

    I guess it is 1/50th, but the idea is that you set it on any camera to where the sync speed goes. Most cameras will have an indicator. I’ve had an cheaper one, broke in a couple of days of use. So that’s why I decided to go with this one and it holds up some beating for sure. I don’t want any wireless triggers that are powered by batteries or could fail because of that. And yes you can put on a diffuser, good idea! That only works though when you have the time to use an external meter.

    Thanks for the video! It’s very helpful. I have a question re using this on a film camera - my MP. If I set the aperture at say f8 with 400 ISO film, and then the shutter speed at 1/50th. Then I set the flash to A and dial in the f8 and 400 iso. Let’s say it shows me a distance of 4 meters. Does the shutter speed not matter any more? If I change the shutter speed to 1/15 (with tripod), wouldn’t it expose the photo for longer? So how do I compensate for slower shutter speeds? Is the data on the flash LCD screen relevant only for 1/50 after which I have to start compensating via flash power? Thank you! And sorry if it’s a silly question. I tried reading the manual but it didn’t help.

I have one question: You were saying that after you indicate the camera aperture and film speed, the camera shows the distance, in which the subject would be properly exposed. BUT under what circumstances? Is this true in sunlight but also in complete darkness? Does this not depend on the ambient light available? Thanks so much, i'm a newbie!

  • @TIPSinc01

    @TIPSinc01

    3 ай бұрын

    I think you mean that the flash will show the distance. That’s true, so you set the aperture and film speed accordingly on your flash. Then you can adjust the power of the flash until you have the right distance to your subject. The output will be the same on sunlight or darkness, but it depends on your settings if ambient light will be present too. If you would shoot at F16, there will be less ambient light then let’s say F2. Because most have a low flash sync speed you’ll probably will have to compensate with the aperture for that if you don’t want to include any ambient light.
