Flag on a kite line Tutorial

Here is a brief description of a method of attaching a flag to a kite line. Flags and kites are forgiving enough that a wide variety of attachment and stiffening materials can be used to achieve the same overall effect which is a pleasing flying flag on a kiteline.

    That is one of the best kite lesson videos I've ever watched. You explanations were clear and the added tips for stiffening the flag and adding sacrificial material are invaluable ! Thank you.

    Well done Glenn. A very compreheive guide to the varied ways of flag flying. I must consider getting a few more seasonal flags. On a side note I am always intrigued that most older buildings in my city have a flag pole yet rarely is a flag ever flown.

    You might get lucky if you approach your city government and ask for the long term loan of a flag. Tell them it will be used respectfully and shared with the viewing public via KZread videos. That worked for me!

    @@amycuaresma Amy, a friend of mine in San Diego did a Patriot kite fly using a Premier Patriot 24 sled as the lifter and an American flag on the line. He was approached by a member of the military who gave him thanks and appreciation for displaying the colors. Based on that, I'd say it is not o ly safe, but desirable. As you know, flags are symbols and symbols elicit emotion. If you fly the flag upside down, let it drag or pair it with something sarcastic or subversive, be prepared for the consequences. My patriot displays are always appreciated.

    Hi Glenn.is it possible to attach flags straight to line instead using carabiners? how many maximum flags can be attached ?do you think drag and air mu resist to handle the line if there are so many flags?please advise me

    Ali, you can do no harm in trying this yourself. The main consideration is that the flag is easily seen. Therefore, a stiffening rod or a weight will keep it perpendicular to the ground. Thanks for the question.

    Hey Glenn, what is the best kite for flying 3 or 4 flags on a windy day? I am looking for a large kite that can withstand high winds. Thanks for your time.

  • @PanyingPilot

    Hi Mike. Your question is harder to answer than to ask, but I'll try. There are two sets of considerations. First, the kite. As a rule, the higher the wind, the smaller the kite. A frameless parafoil kite is likely to be more forgiving than a framed kite. That said, certain framed kites can be stacked and flown as a train, achieving scalable lift. Of course it is understood that the kite line and anchoring system must be up to the task, Secondly, flags produce a surprising amount of drag. The bigger the flag, the better it's made, the more drag it will produce. Multiply that by three and the downward force on a kiteline is significant. I suggest you start by looking at Premier Kites Collections online. A Killip parafoil will work nicely and cover a lot of sky. Alternately, sled kites like the 36 or 81 sizes are also very good and pull like a horse in a fresh wind. Finally, the delta conyne kites can be linked with bridle line and dresses with tails which may compliment your three flag display. If your instincts say, go big or go home, then save your pennies and choose the largest Killip parafoil you can. You can also look at Kaixuan kites in China. Ask for Monica. Look at a pilot kite as your lifter. The prices are more affordable. Good luck and remember that the fun is in the chase, so shop around. Glenn

    Can you use water instead of using sand or dirt in the weighted bottle?

  • @PanyingPilot

    I prefer the dry stuff. If you are actively kiting, the wind and heat may dehydrate you faster than you might expect. As a test, weigh out 8 oz. of dirt/sand. Compare the volume to an equal amount of water.

    About how long a line is the bottom line from the kite to the flag. It looks like you just taped a loop on the end of the rope in the picture but you also mentioned tensioner so do you have a way to adjust the length of the bottom line depending on the size of the flag so that it will fly perpendicular?

  • @PanyingPilot

    @PanyingPilot

    4 жыл бұрын

    Another good question. What I used for the lower line was salvaged from a tent. They have a tensioning solution with the looped line going though a three holes plastic fitting that can be slid along the tent cord. However, instead of an adjustable line, you could also use 550 paracord with knotted loops at regular intervals on an overall length of 8 feet. In this method, you rise the flag and estimate vertical. Next, put a carabiner on the flight line. Finally, clip in the paracord at the loop of your choice. Gather the remaining cord and clip the loops onto the same carabiner to tidy up. Finally, if it appears that I use tape on a load bearing surface, it is my video work at fault. On the flag it is grommets and sewing. Tape can mitigate fraying.

  • @PanyingPilot

    @PanyingPilot

    One more idea, if you use a fixed length of line for the lower attachment, slide the carabiner along the flight line to approximate vertical. Remember three wraps around the flight line with the carabiner.

    The taped loop is shrink tubing over a knot. Now that I am more experienced, I would create a braided loop with the aid of a latch needle. The tape or tubing on the end would be totally unnecessary in that situation.

    Noah Runciman Noah, because kiteboard lines cross, I'd be more inclined to express a theme with a BUFF or some personal outerwear. Too, it might be interesting if a small mast and pennant could be fixed in a non destructive way to the board itself. Of course a kite and flag makes your beach camp easily found.
