@@arcisvar4863 It’s true that Chinese are the majority; but Singapore is historically Malay and this is even reflected in our national anthem - it’s sung in Malay. Now here’s where things get complicated: the Chinese in Singapore speak a variety of different dialects which aren’t mutually intelligible. So the government pushed the “Speak Mandarin” campaign, encouraging the use of Mandarin Chinese in public settings like schools and offices so that Chinese people can actually understand each other. Meanwhile, instead of learning the majority’s language, Singaporeans speak English as an interracial medium language. Over time, people from the same race communicate in more English than their mother tongue. English has become our main communication and business language. However, Malay remains our national language and the language our national anthem is sung in.

According to Lee Kuan Yew, the Chinese population wanted the five stars, which were modelled off the flag of the People's Republic of China, while the predominantly Muslim Malay population in Singapore wanted the crescent moon as a symbol of Islam, and eventually, both symbols were incorporated in the flag. Singapore remains the only non-Islamic nation to have a crescent moon in its national flag.
