  • @kitnal4143

@Truth Before Opinions Welsh people are still British (as much as Scottish and English 😂). Culturally all three are ad unique as eachother, with Scotland and Wales sharing quite a bit thanks to their celtic routes (also Cornwall but we don't talk about them). Brits = England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland. Although all of those countries would rather be called by their defined names (English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish) to different degrees.

Random fact: A British rock band named Queen has their symbol based on the coat of arms, they switched up the animals on the coat of arms to their zodiac signs. 2 Lions for Roger (drummer) and John (bassist) for Leo 2 fairies for Freddie (lead singer and pianist) for Virgo And they switched the crown into a crab for Brian (guitarist) for Cancer. Of all the Overseas Territories, Gibraltar 🇬🇮 is the only one that doesn't feature the Union Jack on it. Adopted in 1982 it features a two colour flag widthways with the upper 2/3 white and the bottom third red with a red castle and golden key in the middle. The white two thirds represents (according to World Atlas) Peace and Honesty, the red bottom third can be interpreted as the blood shed for those who fought for Gibraltar and the castle and key represents its strategic location at the point where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet

You didn't quite nail the explanation of the design of the flag. The St Patrick's cross isn't shrunk, it is split half and half with the Scottish saltire in a pinwheel layout (ie white on the clockwise side, red on the anticlockwise side) but then a white border is added on both sides to comply with the heraldic rules of tincture. Ok maybe I didn't explain it any better, it's a little complicated.

A few things I want to add to the UK episode: The third largest city in the UK is actually Leeds, not Birmingham. Birmingham is second, Manchester is only considered the top 4 when you include Greater Manchester, which is a county, not a city. Counting places like Bolton, Wigan etc into Manchester is like including Pasadena into LA. It doesn’t count. I wish you included the division between North and South England, they are polarised just as much as England is from Scotland. In the music section, it would have been nice if you mentioned the plethora of genre's that emerged from the underground London scene: -Jungle -Dubstep -Grime -Drum n Bass -Garage -Future Garage etc. Other than that, great video!

If you're looking only based on city the limits then Birmingham is the largest city in the UK not London which is obviously wrong. Manchester has a stupidly divided council system within its urban area. If you look at urban area, metro area, or travel to work area population, Manchester is the second or 3rd largest city - with an incredibly similar population to Birmingham. The idea of Birmingham being the second city is becoming more and more outdated now, Manchester's economy has grown at an incredible rate and the city's population has expanded rapidly, both outpacing Birmingham for a number of years now. Visiting Manchester is evidence enough to know it's not 5th largest or whatever the city council boundaries include. The truth is Manchester and Birmingham are very similarly sized, with certain criteria giving Manchester the larger population while others give Birmingham the larger population. If you can't recognise this fact then you really need to do some research. For reference I'm not from Manchester, I'm from Cardiff so I come at this from an outsider's perspective.

  • @thomasm.creamer2728

Yeah, Manchester is bigger than Leeds when you consider the metropolitan area, which is how most people define the size of cities internationally. I don't know how he ranked Birmingham below Manchester, but Manchester is more populated than Leeds by any reasonable measure.

Dieu et mon droit translates to "god AND my right" not "is my right". If it was "is" it would be "EST" not "ET". From Wikipedia: The motto is French for "God and my right", meaning that the king is "Rex Angliae Dei gratia" ("King of England by the grace of God"). It is used to imply that the monarch of a nation has a God-given (divine) right to rule.

“Dieu et mon droit” translates to “God and my right”, not “God is my right”. Since the British coat of arms is also the personal Royal Arms of the Monarch, I believe it’s referring to the ancient belief of the Divine Right of Kings, where the Monarch is the Monarch because God said so.

Fun fact; traditionally the Lancashire county flag is a white background with a red rose, but it was never registered with the Flag Commission. When they tried to register it they were told it was already taken, so they had to switch to the yellow background. Often you'll see both flown around the county.

Ooh I can actually use my Medieval Languages degree! "Dieu et mon droit" actually means "God and my right" alluding to the divine right to rule. It is in Old French, likely in what we call Anglo-Norman French which came about post-Conquest and really hit its stride in the reign of Henry II.

Excellent job, just one note on Scottish education. We don't do GCSEs and A levels as Scotland have a completely independent or 'devolved' education system. Healthcare, town planning and the legal system are also devolved. Again, great job. This was a mammoth episode!

You should do one 30 min one on the US that mentions the states and territories and talks about things that are generally holistically true and overarching differences, then do a few on different parts of the US when you finish the alphabet. Otherwise you'll have to cut out LOADS of interesting things I'd love to hear about. (Though I'm happy for a 3 hour episode as well!)
