    Oddly enough... I approached the drum pattern where the first kick drum starts on the last 16th note of the 4th beat not on the 1 - So the groove is the "a" of 4 then the "+" (and) of 1 - snare on the 2 kick on the "a" of 2 kick on the"+" of 3 snare on the 4 then it loops! It's so cool to have a hit song without playing a drum on the 1 or 3....

    Great tutorial. Interesting drum management. Rather than the claps being late. Actually the first kick is a little early but you have shifted the beat over to accomodate that. I usually have problems with patterns since I like to use pickup notes like this early kick, but your approach to this will help me out in the future. Thanks for sharing!

    The claps actually go on 2 and 4 in in the club. the kick never hits the downbeat though. This happened because the melody is actually 1 1/16th note early in the remake. In other words, the melody doesn't start on one.

    mojo: I contemplated going for the kick being early but I didn't like the whole concept of having a pattern just for that pickup at the start. I've started to notice that a lot of Dre and Storch beats use that 4-and beat quite a lot. I just remade Lets Ride (Strip Club) prod by Scott Storch and use the pickup method for the piano. Its available for free download on my website: warbeats dot com

    The relative positions of the kick and the clap here are correct, but the claps ARE indeed on the 2 and 4. What's really the case is that the first kick of the pair falls on the 16th note IMMEDIATELY BEFORE the 1 and the 3. i.e. the first kick drum doesn't coincide with the downbeat; the kicks are unconventionally syncopated. This way, all other rhythms fall nicely into their conventional places (hats, claps, etc.).

    For all you producers saying that the clap is supposed to be on the 1&2...While that is normal....It keeps you in a box, there is no reason why ANY instrument should not be on ANY beat...Music is all about creativity....And creativity is NOT saying something is supposed to be somewhere...Creativity is NOT a caged animal...Unless you make it that. Anyway, if you do actually pick apart Dre's production style, you'd KNOW he delays his claps sometimes, and maybe this was the "accident" he explained

  • @DINO92AVFC
    @DINO92AVFC11 жыл бұрын

    claps ARE on 2 and 4, they must be because they define rhythm (like half-metronome), it's everything else that should be shifted left. Try turning metronome on, you'll see it just doesn't sound right.

    If made according to theory, the claps would still land on 2 and 4. The bass drums are what should be moved over one beat to the left, which would land the "first" kick drum in the beat on the 16th beat point of each previous measure. i.e., the beat technically starts a 16th note before the downbeat. This would allow for easier remixing and building the song in general, but hey. It's already done. That aside, your videos are sculpting me, good sir. Cheers to you.
