My grandpa told me once that transmission oil is very effective with cleaning black plastic pieces. He discovered this once when he went to go check the transmission oil on a newly purchased truck and it dripped all over the engine cover. When he used a shop towel to clean it off he noticed that the plastic looked about the same darkness as it was when new. He cleaned the rest of the engine cover with the transmission oil. Months later when I came to visit him he was showing me his new purchase(the truck) and that's when he showed me his new discovery. That's one of my favorite memories of him.

Hey, Bob. After watching this video, I went onto Craigslist and found a used miter saw. The insert plate was chewed up by the blade. 45 degree cut messed up the insert. Other than that, It's in really good shape. Only paid $40 for it. Best Craftsman purchase I've ever made. Now I'm onto making a stand for it. Thank you for inspiring me to find good used tools. You saved me a lot of money with this video.

Ospho is orthophosphoric acid, the same component used in most other rust converters. Orthophosphoric acid is also an ingredient in colas, so using a can of coke gets the same thing done, just slower!

I picked up a 1970s craftsman contractor table saw from a friend who stored it outside in the rain. Needles to day the nice cast iron top and wings were covered in rust. I ended using navel jelly. Stuff is awesome and I was able to coat, let sit, remove, sand a bit and reapply the used stuff. Including wait times between applying the jelly, it took about 8 hours to completely clean the surface. In the end the top looks good as new. Every other time I use the table saw I make sure to add a coat of hardwood floor wax to it, no more rust and wood just glides over the surface.

Bob, I've actually got the same drill press.. Picked up with a bench top bandsaw a while back for $100. It works fine, but I've been wanting to get rid of the surface rust, as well as tune it up a bit.. I actually enjoy the process of making an old rusty tool look and function like new. Good to see you promoting that so others will see it's not so hard.

I have an excellent drill press, but a belt sander is something I really really want. I can buy a new one for about $150 and I think I'll end up having to buy it because I really want to start making knives. The 2 things I really want is a bandsaw I can use for metal as my small one only will do wood, maybe plastic and Perspex but the band size limits the blades I can buy. The next thing is a power hammer. I know I'll never get one because forging is really just a pipe dream but my dream workshop has one! Restoring scooters sounds cool too man, I have a Yamaha U7E from 1969, I'm going to restore that one day when I organise everything else, I also have a Honda XR400 I want to turn into a motard but with my back injury I doubt I'll ever ride it. Good video man, you're really well set up now.

Another really great rust removal solution is citric acid. That works great when you have a reservoir or something sealed up where you can't get to, like an old fuel tank. You can buy citric acid as powder from any pharmacy and then just dilute it with some water. Really great method and really cost efficient.

  • @coreyward

I have that same sander as a wood sanding machine with a small disc sander instead of a buffing wheel. If you ever want to use the belt for internal sanding, which is what those two smaller wheels in the front are for, make sure you check out those small wheels. They don't have bearings, just bushings, and mine locked up and since the abrasive side of the belt runs on them it ground right through one of them in no time. The third wheel in the back might be the same way, I can't remember. I actually have an extra disc sanding platen and table for it if you want it. They sent me some extra parts that I didn't really need dealing with the problems I had with it. You'd have to fab a mount for the table. I have the stock one but it's garbage.

Google "chelation rust removal", if it were me I would have taken it apart, dropped the pieces into a bin with Evaporust and came back the next day. But then I have that stuff leftover.. soo..

Put the used Evaporust in a container and save it for your next project.

As a tip for dealing with rust I use a product called vactan does the same thing as the product you use but it's water soluble and there's no fumes seems to work a lot quicker aswell

Grape video Bob! very informative, Ospho is really good, I have also used the vinegar trick for large areas by mixing in baking soda which allows you to apply it as a paste. Any other grape finds at the estate sale?... Keep up the grape work!

ospho, naval jelly, and milk stone remover are all phosphoric acid, and they remove rust as well as leaving a surface that will be slightly protected from rust. MSR is the cheapest, and can be found at tractor supply stores and similar. naval jelly is at home Depot and you can get a pint for $7 or so. naval jelly is nice because it is a jelly, so it will stick to vertical surfaces.

Try CRC 3-36 for removing rust. it also penetrates the metal to protect it over time and acts as a lube also. I put it on my tablesaw and jointer bed

Can you do a detailed video about the evaluation saw that you have..I need a new miter saw and was thinking about that one. I asked the company if a 12 inch was available but it is not. What is the thickest material that can be cut? & Can you cut a 4x4 post ?

I have the same belt sander oddly enough the belt cover is missing too but the buffer side is a disc sander yours probably used to be a disc sander and they took off the table. I can send pics if you want to change it back. If you feel you'll use it more as a disc sander for instance. I'm getting rid of mine because I upgraded but it was very useful to me.

A tip for fighting rust on parts. Try gun bluing or pickling the surface. (the process goes by many names) it wont add thickness but its a great way to protect the surface of metal.

Surface rust in Savannah?!? Say it ain't so! I live about an hour south and if you just look away from a piece of metal for 20 seconds, it'll get rusty. Great tip on the OSPO! I learned about it from a shrimp boat operator and have used it for years..the stuff seems almost magic at times. Great video...thanks!

I can only afford used tools so I check Craigslist, Ebay, and online auction sites. I recently purchased a floor model Delta drill press and lathe through Proxibid. Each were from different sellers, but I paid a total of $210 for both. This was a huge savings for me. My 12" band saw, 6" belt/9" disc sander, and 12" planer were purchased years ago through Craigslist and work really well. I just want a jointer and will patiently wait for a cheap used one.
