Looks just like a typical weekend day for me. Mow the lawn, break the lawnmower, modify a tool to fix the mower… end up reorganizing my whole shop, buy more tools, adopt a dog, and realize I didn’t even fix the mower

I am reminded of how self-sufficient you can, and many times have to be, in this profession. It's cool to see Alec make tools, repair tools, make tools to make tools, etc. It's easy to dismiss, but when you think about it, that's actually kind of amazing.

Alec, being sentimental over a few prized possessions is fine. I still have the trumpet (1984 C G Conn Director, Model 18B) that I started learning on. In the 38 years I've owned that horn, I've replaced one of the valve spring guides (corroded and broke); the C clip, back plate, and spring for the spit valve on the main tuning slide (the c clip corroded and broke), reglued all three plastic inserts on the valve key tops, and replaced the felt pads on both sides of the top screw caps for the valve slides. I've replaced the vacuum formed case that was falling apart, and I'm debating on having the minor dents (and one not so minor dent from a snare drum during marching band practice) pounded out of the bell pipe. And if it were possible to remove and have the electroplate put back on, I might do that. The last two don't make any financial sense for a horn that's worth at most $400 USD, especially since I'm looking at maybe getting a a Bach Strat horn (around $3,500 USD) next year. (First things first, I need to find an instructor to help me get my lip back into playing shape. Take my advice and don't ever stop doing something you love for 15 years.) But this horn followed me in a move from Jacksonville, Arkansas to Phoenix, Arizona; three middle schools, one high school, and six years of college; and even on a trip to California for a "battle of the German Polka Bands." But, I love that horn, so any work that keeps me enjoying the horn is worth it in my book. If you find the same level of love and enjoyment from a tool you use, then getting sentimental isn't a bad thing.

Have to admit it, this video cracked me up. Had a morning/afternoon like this. Making a knife for a client and wanted to make a pair of dies. Went to cut the die plate on my chop saw, but the clamp I needed broke. So went to fix it, but couldn't find my drill to remove the screws. Its electric so went for my extension cord and it was cut up from a hedger someone used. So had put a new female plug on it. So found the drill, fixed the cord to use the drill, so could fix the clamp, so could use the saw, so could cut the metal, so could make the plate so could make a knife. /headspin

It's interesting, because I actually try to ensure that I listen to my sentimental thoughts. I feel like tools carry our history as a species, especially the tools that basically haven't changed since the bronze age. I try to avoid worrying about keeping things in mint condition, or restoring to factory condition, but not only does keeping an old tool working connect you to the tool, it helps you understand it better, and normally means that you're using less resources in a world where people (all of us) use too many on a daily basis.

At least he finally could fly back to USA but was warned by many. You wont be back in a long time. Now he is ditching a significantly better shop and freedoms in place of lesser offerings. Im beginning to think he built Montana shop just to get Will Stelter a bunch of experience on black smithing.

I have an unrelated suggestion. Try making Damascus with iron and steel. In ancient Rome or something, they made that kind of steel and you could see the pattern all the way through even without an acid etch. It is now a mystery how the steel was made. Maybe it was iron and steel forgewelded together. You should try that. Attempt#10

They say it takes a tool shop to clean up and maintain a tool shop. There is nothing wrong about being sentimental about tools. They take on Kami (spirit) with use and time and pull the personality of the user into well used tools and they become an extension of the craftsman. Make new tools but remember the old, one is silver and the other gold.

It's a mill, not a lathe. And 'lather' is incorrect term. It would be turning -- you turn things on a lathe. Wheels are bulky for mill vice handles, and don't offer much in the way of leverage. You want as much as possible (this means the maximum length you can reasonably get.) A crank style handle that is detachable would be ideal.

“Just like the pair of tongs I messed up, there’s another tool that’s been with me for a very long time…” I was surprised when this segway did not end with Alec throwing poor, long-suffering Jamie under the KZread bus again!
