I bloody love all this E36 content, just a few blokes building a cool car. No annoying clickbait or over exaggerating.

get those cams sprayed with oil and in a sealed bag because the lobes will develop surface rust pretty quick
Spanner 100% undoes more bolts, that e36 looks amazing 🥰
Love this build series. The green just pops now. Definitely more bolts done up with spanners than undone.

..yeah, Boston Green really bangs, especially this one 😊
26:30 - I like your theory but the cylinder walls wear with the cylinders and the bore of the cylinder wall and the cylinder its self becomes "out of round" (basically the cylinder bore becomes oval shape, and the piston matches the cylinder bore. So the piston also becomes oval shape). Piston rings are what seal the gap between the piston skirt and the wall of the cylinder, which when worn will cause a loss of compression. So replacing rings on "out of round" pistons will give you compression back without the need to replace pistons, but if you tried to replace these "out of round" pistons with brand new "in round" pistons without boring out the cylinder walls you would get piston slap (which is where the piston can move too freely in the cylinder, because the out of round cylinder bore is wider due to the wear from the old pistons)This is why when you look for forged pistons you will find the factory spec width and the factory spec width + 0.5mm. Machine shops will mill out 0.5mm of the cylinder wall to bring the bore back "in to round", then you fill that gap with oversized pistons.

What about nikasil cylinder liners being worn away by sulphur in fuel?
@jamesbaggaley1460

Pistons don’t become “out of round” unless they’ve made contact with the cylinder walls… Only the piston skirt will be damaged if piston slap has occurred.

@@boqer123 I don't know a great deal about that tbf as most of my experience/knowledge is based on the 4g63 which is an iron block. That definitely could be a factor though if that engine definitely is Nikasil. Are you sure it definitely is? Apparently BMW replaced a lot of these engines under warranty with the newer aluminium variant and I think stopped production after 1998? All things considered I probably would've sent the block off to the machine shop with the head to get them to measure it all and get them to recommend next steps, as you could be putting a fresh head on a block that potentially needs to be bored/honed or at the very least needs new piston rings (I can't actually remember if you did mention the block was getting machine work). Although as a caveat to that I don't think it's very straightforward to actually repair a nikasil block. M539 Restorations got his alpina engine rebuilt that was nikasil and I think it ended up breaking down so he had to source a new block that was in spec. Apologies if that doesn't really answer your question haha
@boqer123
Ай бұрын
@@cooolsimon282 ah think you're getting confused (don't blame you cause we have 3 engines haha) - our engine that was blowing smoke is a nikasil engine 100%. We've checked the casting numbers on the block. This new block we're using is alusil m62 and is absolutely great. We have proof of compression tests and full service history from the engine it's pulled from. The engine with the bad bottom end is getting scrapped, cba to waste machine shop money on that haha

Love your style, keep rocking it!
That E36 is coming out so sick! Spanner defo undoes more bolts than it does up, more importantly though It would be an honour to have the great Gandy’s signature
Spanner definitely undoes more than does up, me a spanner is to get into tight spaces and to loosen tough bolts in small spaces. Loving the build
Love that you take your time to explain what some of the parts does. Cant go wrong with the color green😍
Wheeyyy been waiting for this, came across your videos randomly as a recommended suggestion, and I'm now hooked, you also cause me serious hunger issues with the cooking segments but also inspire me to cook more often 😂😂 Keep that good stuff coming 💪💪🤌
A 42 minute BQR video is unbelievable scenes
Looks like I'll be back on the lofi hype again now haha. Bloody great vibes 22:20
Car looks incredible !!
Love the vids man, can’t wait for the e36 T-shirt and poster to arrive
Love the uploads man, I been following the build for about two years, and I'm glad to see major progress. Especially that yall putting a bmw V8, rather than a ls or a M50 turbo wich is what everybody does.🔥🤝
Best video in a while, so much going on. Love this car
me and my friend just bought an e36 328i and boy it is a project engine doesn’t run and so much needs doing so much rust etc. we are broke and have little to no knowledge but we got the whole year😎, love watching your videos ❤
I reckon a spanner for sure does up more than it undoes, because I'm forever adding bolts that fell out of my shitboxes so my spanner not only does up the original bolts but also does up new bolts which undid themselves. Even bolts which worked loose but didn't fall out get spannered tight again several times before they get undone to replace something, so they might get three 'does up's for every one 'undoes'.
I reckon my spanners and sockets undo more because I like to loot parts from cars at scrapyards so I remove the bits I want, then remove the faulty/broken from my car, then install replacement also that 1" impact was pretty awesome, I can't imagine you'd need one often - but when you do ..... what a treat
loving the 36 build content! and a spanner does more bolts up, impact gun go brrr
Should always loosen head bolts from the outside inwards in opposites (if that makes sense) loving the E36 series!
A spanner definitely undoes more stuff. Whenever I'm finished working on the e90 I'm left with a handful of screws and nuts. It's an unlimited source of hardware.
You guys are working so hard on this and it's going to be SICK. Man, that paint cleaned up SO nice, it's so fucking shiny hahah, that Ryan did a great job.
Been looking ripped lately brother keep smashing it!
Spanner does more loosening surely as when your done loosening you drop the spanner into the black whole never to be seen again, always a 10mm to 😅
36 cleans up well! Spanner gets thrown across the work shop more than it undoes things. But your car keys travel further than your car!
Cars looking sick, loving the e36 vids at the minute. feels depressing when the video ends knowing iv got to wait like a week for the next one
Seeing the 36 all cleaned up makes me miss my Boston green coupe. Looks sick. Can't wait to see it with the V8 boys!!
A spanner undoes more things that it does up deffo. Loving the E36 build!
You need a heavy duty harmonic socket for that. It's basically a weighted socket for cracking crankshaft bolts
How good is that Aldi magnet with the light in the end. Work zone tools aren’t that bad especially for the price (unpopular opinion) Also definitely undoes more bolts than it does up, stripping things down for scrap or unfinished projects.
It depends who the spanner belongs to. A backyard warrior's spanner has probably undone more bolts if there are any unfinished project cars. A mechanic has probably done up more since a mechanic might find loose or missing bolts and replace em.
When using heat if you can't access where the bolt screws into heating the bolt up will just expand into the hole making it tighter, heat the bolt up an try an cool it down quick to break it away from the thread. Heat makes everything expand you don't wanna expand the bolt inside the thread.
Spanner undoes more because it only gets used for tight spots like taking brake callipers off
spanners have to undo more than tighten stuff up because half the time you round the bolt out then come to the realisation you should of probably used a socket
Bloody starving was waiting to see what i was cooking for dinner but you didnt give me a new recipe 😂
28:05 Nickelback are an incredible band
Spanner’s definitely undo more than they do up…just based off the amount of times I’ve finished a job with bolts left in my hand 😅
Love the work you’re all doing! My unpopular opinion is the s54 exhaust note is overhyped
I'd definitely chuck some new valve stem seals in those heads while they're off. They're cheap to do and a fuck tonne easier to do when the engines out and heads are off. Loving this e36 series, keep it up 👍
That E36 is looking mint.
it might be reasonable to hypothesize that in repair and maintenance contexts, spanners are likely used to undo more often, while in assembly contexts, they are used to tighten more.
Loving the e36 content ! Unpopular opinion, e36 is the best of the 3 series .
Yeah a spanner definitely undoes more stuff than it does up. Although it depends who owns the spanner.
Great video!!!
I would say a spanner undoes bolts more often because most bolts get lost and you just leave them out because theyre not needed...
looks good.
Seeing the similarities of this engine and my project R53 engine (mostly of it being a pain) just makes my wonder how BMW thought them both through. Spanner also undoes more bolts than it does up... think of all the bolts that are left over after a job 👀
Well, on the spanner debate. I put my E36 back together a year ago and I just found a couple bolts that were supposed to be on there, so I'd say they undo more bolts than they do up.
New BMW update… LETS GO! 💯
You sais yourself 5:09 am i going the wrong way 😂 your definitely tightening more with a spanner than un doing, mostly from getting it wrong first time 😂
a spanner loosens more bolts that it tightens as you may disassemble something and not put it back together
Spanner always undoes more, as I'm always left with more bolts when the car/engine goes back together...
Should defo body match colour all the trim work. Would look soooo sick!
Unpopular opinion: the Rover K - series is a brilliant engine. Revy, sound amazing, half decent on fuel on a run
Spanners do up more I reckon, so sick to see car content so regular and long videos!!! Yes lad
Does more bolts up for sure!
Wonder how long all them tools.will.stay on the magnetic strips
Unpopular opinion is Audi a1 are sick cars. Spanner definitely undoes more bolts then dose up cause everytime u take sommat apart you have atleast 1 or 2 spare bolts for weight saving
i use kiwi black boot liquid 99p it last a month and its water proof black everything .
It’s also a lot to do with the weights of the sockets. That 1inch socket looks like a weighted or overweight socket!
Ive got that impact, considering the kick it feels like its putting out, i actually think its a bit shit. Its failed to get bolts out that ive done relatively easily with a breaker bar.

It’s alright on its way back to Amazon 😂
E36 looks sick did you ceramic coat it?
I would say the spanner takes more stuff a part but not all stuff gets put back together
What about if you work at a breakers yard? Them spanners only go left!
Need a review on that E91 335d?
Not that i wanted to enter the contest but since many people end up with spare hardware after a project/repair, I'd say OFF or apart mostly. For example you took apart a few engines to make one and now have lots of spare bolts 😜 Also if those head bolts are TTY(torque-to-yield) don't re-use them but idk anything bout those engines.
Spanners definitely undo more stuff, not all spanner’s but there’s definitely a lot more unfinished builds then finished one out there.
And you’ll get some tosser bang their door into it in a car park. I’ve got a 1995 silver e36 2.8i stored on a farm (outside, unfortunately) but can’t wait to get it into a garage to start the restoration project 🏁🥳🎉
Spanner definitely undoes more bolts. I undo 5, lose 1 and put back 4 😮💨
Does 100% more bolts up for sureee
Question was boqer.com taken when you first started? Was the 123 added randomly or any meaning?
7:24 that’s what she said… 😂 the guy she told you not to worry about 😂.
vibration of the v8 makes bolts go loose, on all important bolt like oil pick up and oil pump always use some sort of threat lock ! I am no BMW engine knower but those lifters look like flat tappets, they have specific thickness for the the specific valve they ride, u need to label them.
We need some cupra videos man even a pov drive would be sick
How much would it be for the detail that you were given? I can’t find a price list for OCDetailing

john was a fuckin weapon ahahah
to be more technical Regular spanners undoes more bolts and ratchet spanners do up more bolts. why IDK just feel like thats right
but explain to me, if youre heatin up the bolt it expands. so no shit its hard to get it loose, or am I wrong here
Andys proper little squeaker had is creased 😂
My unpopular opinion is that everyone should build their own cars, not go to service. In that way you have much bigger love for your car and you know everything about it when it breaks down. Love your videos, keep it up!

Undoes more bolts for sure
I prefer ambers on e36, maybe nowadays it is not such an unpopular opinion but some years ago when I got into e36s EVERYONE put clears on them, I just bought new ambers to make it EVEN MORE ORANGE (some people got really pissed off back in the day haha)
a spanner on does more bolts, think about box of random bolts you have
Spanners deffo undo more bolts then do up, think of all the disassembled projects that will never go back together.
You guys are like Clarkson putting those gloves on😂😂
I remember that yellow tool box being unboxed back in the Datsun days 😂
It would be cool to see you collaborate with more companies almost like a car check and day in the life. Also where's the cooking?!
A spanner undoes more stuff that it does up surely?
Josh, check all pistions carefully. You might be able to tell which cylinder was burning water/oil. It would usually be clean and shiny!

Unpopular option is e36 saloons are better than coupes. Also 100% takes more bolts out than does up because you’re always left with bolts are the job
Does stuff up more than undoes, definitely
Spanners do up more things IMO. more cars are built then broken for parts and every bolt that is undone on a running/ customers car. Has to be done back up 👀
@boqer123
Ай бұрын
Very interesting take
Bless you
A spanner undoes more things during its life cycle cause you usually start doing in bolts by hand
Spanners most definitely undoes more bolts in its lifetime, as you're always left with extra bolts after putting something back together 😂😂
