26:30 - I like your theory but the cylinder walls wear with the cylinders and the bore of the cylinder wall and the cylinder its self becomes "out of round" (basically the cylinder bore becomes oval shape, and the piston matches the cylinder bore. So the piston also becomes oval shape). Piston rings are what seal the gap between the piston skirt and the wall of the cylinder, which when worn will cause a loss of compression. So replacing rings on "out of round" pistons will give you compression back without the need to replace pistons, but if you tried to replace these "out of round" pistons with brand new "in round" pistons without boring out the cylinder walls you would get piston slap (which is where the piston can move too freely in the cylinder, because the out of round cylinder bore is wider due to the wear from the old pistons)This is why when you look for forged pistons you will find the factory spec width and the factory spec width + 0.5mm. Machine shops will mill out 0.5mm of the cylinder wall to bring the bore back "in to round", then you fill that gap with oversized pistons.

Pistons don’t become “out of round” unless they’ve made contact with the cylinder walls… Only the piston skirt will be damaged if piston slap has occurred.

@@boqer123 I don't know a great deal about that tbf as most of my experience/knowledge is based on the 4g63 which is an iron block. That definitely could be a factor though if that engine definitely is Nikasil. Are you sure it definitely is? Apparently BMW replaced a lot of these engines under warranty with the newer aluminium variant and I think stopped production after 1998? All things considered I probably would've sent the block off to the machine shop with the head to get them to measure it all and get them to recommend next steps, as you could be putting a fresh head on a block that potentially needs to be bored/honed or at the very least needs new piston rings (I can't actually remember if you did mention the block was getting machine work). Although as a caveat to that I don't think it's very straightforward to actually repair a nikasil block. M539 Restorations got his alpina engine rebuilt that was nikasil and I think it ended up breaking down so he had to source a new block that was in spec. Apologies if that doesn't really answer your question haha

@@cooolsimon282 ah think you're getting confused (don't blame you cause we have 3 engines haha) - our engine that was blowing smoke is a nikasil engine 100%. We've checked the casting numbers on the block. This new block we're using is alusil m62 and is absolutely great. We have proof of compression tests and full service history from the engine it's pulled from. The engine with the bad bottom end is getting scrapped, cba to waste machine shop money on that haha

I reckon a spanner for sure does up more than it undoes, because I'm forever adding bolts that fell out of my shitboxes so my spanner not only does up the original bolts but also does up new bolts which undid themselves. Even bolts which worked loose but didn't fall out get spannered tight again several times before they get undone to replace something, so they might get three 'does up's for every one 'undoes'.

When using heat if you can't access where the bolt screws into heating the bolt up will just expand into the hole making it tighter, heat the bolt up an try an cool it down quick to break it away from the thread. Heat makes everything expand you don't wanna expand the bolt inside the thread.
