Fixing rod knock on a RZR 800S! Engine tear down time... Episode 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Unfortunately, Jerry's 2014 Polaris RZR 800S has developed a pretty bad rod knock. We were hoping it was the clutch, but no... it's the engine knocking. In episode 1 we took the engine out of the machine. Today we are going to tear it down and get the crankshaft out of it, and hopefully identify the root cause of the knocking noise!
In this 5 part series, we will be removing the engine from the chassis, rebuilding it, then installing the engine back into the frame. It is going to be quite a process with obstacles along the way, but all in all we had a lot of fun. I invite you to come along on this journey with us as we get this thing up and running, then back on the trails!

Side to side dont matter as much as up and down all will have side to side and the bottom of the rod big end will be blue if bad bearings hafts

Right, I agree, straight side-to-side is normal. Yamaha puts out the side-to-side movement specs in their service manual, but I couldn't seem to find it in the Polaris 800's book. Up and down is definitely bad. Sometimes it's really hard to tell if it is moving up and down, so I'll try to twist it back and forth. Any rocking movement there indicates that it can move up and down. It doesn't take much to get a knocking noise! Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Would love to see a time lapse between scenes. That way we can see it happen

When you removed the counter balance gear, what is the size of the three bolts? 6mm is too big and 5mm is too small.

Oh, man... I can't remember. I just went through my random bolt drawer and found a few that fit.

How long did it take total to pull rebuild and put back. Any special tools needed? I got the same problem.

In all, it took about a day to tear it down and a day to put it back together. Waiting for parts took the most time.

What is the cost in parts to do all of this?

That one ran us about $1400 for everything. There are reputable sellers on eBay that sell the complete kits so you don't have to get the individual parts. Worth it in my opinion!

Yes, it was knocking pretty bad. I ran it for a little while in Episode 1 so you can hear the sound. Sorry to hear that yours is knocking too!

Yeah, not terrible overall. The hardest part was getting the drivetrain out of the chassis! Mistakes were made but we got her put back together. Thanks for watching!
