Yep! Uppipe cat failure. One of the first mods to any of these 02-06 or so turbo Subarus should be to swap out the catted uppipe for an STI catless uppipe. Identical to the one you got from the JDM car as far as I know. You got pretty unlucky as people talk about these failures a lot, but they are relatively rare. There is a simple resistor mod to delete the EGT sensor as well. It isn't necessary except an emissions check to trigger the check engine light if the CAT was overheating as far as I remember. The scraping noise you heard in the turbo was just the turbine wheel on the heat shield, but I think it definitely still needed a rebuild. The CHRA you got has upgraded wheels anyways. Good work!
