Oh. my. gosh. This has been driving me crazy. I've tried examining the structure of the stitches to understand why it has been happening, I've tried searching the internet, etc etc etc. Accidentally found this video while looking for something else and voila! Thank you so much!!

Wonderful! So glad to hear. Thank you!
The first 2 solutions you employed are what I use for the first two or three stitches in a *round* to avoid ladders. It works really well. It never occurred to me to try it flat! I have to go check the 1st and last stitches of some of my projects to see if I’m getting that enlarged column. Thanks!

Suzanne, Thank you so so much, you are absolutely right, I am quite a loose knitter and I do have this messy first stitch, the one past the edge stitch, I will try your solutions see which one works best for me, I suppose it will be the twist stitch, but I will swatch. I can't thank you enough about this information because I am just about to knit a cardigan and I knew I would have the same problem with the edge, and picking up stitches for the button band. So I send you tons of gratitude.

Great! 🧶
Great video. In my experience, you can be the most even knitter in the world but if your edge stitches are sloppy, no amount of finishing and blocking is going to make your garment look good. I'm all about good finishing and I'm lucky enough to have good solid tension and even stitches, but I've struggled with the solution to sloppy edge stitches for a long time. Who knew the solution was so simple. Wrapping the yarn around the knitting needle clockwise was the answer for me. Thank you Suzanne!

Thank you so much - it works 👍🙏😊
Thank you so much. I didn't understand what part of the yarn I was supposed to be tightening until you showed the section at the bottom of the stitch that goes from the knit stitch to the purl stitch. I'm working on the Taming Your Tension before continuing the MHK program and was stuck until I saw your video! Thanks.

Great, you will learn so much with Binka. Happy Knitting.
Thank you isn't a big enough statement. In the two days since I first saw this video my knitting has been transformed. It's so much neater and my seams look non-existent now. I'm attempting to make some fingerless mittens on my new circular needles using the magic loop (I've only ever done necklines on circular needles) and I was getting terrible ladders so I thought I'd give your method a try on this as well. I can't believe the difference! My first proper project on circular needles is now going really, really well. Thank you so much for doing this for us :)

Wonderful! You got it! 🧶
Very good tips! I've been knitting for several years but I've never learned these tricks! Wonder why you think about slipping the first stitch as a remedy for messy edges? I've heard about doing that to make a really neat edge but I wasn't sure if you can do it in every case.
Very nice

Glad it was helpful!
Question: does the taper of the needle have a big effect here? I don't normally have this problem and I use long taper needles. I'm wondering: the long taper means the tip of my needle is small where it goes into that stitch. For people that use short tapered needles, the larger diameter part of the needle may be going into that stitch and then causing the issue. Is this a known contributor to the problem?
So, when you wrap the yarn around the other way....and when we come back through you say we need to work it throught the back loop, what does that exactly mean? How do we do thaat?
@SuzanneBryan

If you are on the wrong side you would purl through the back loop. I think I will add this to my video to do this. Thanks! ❤️
You knit with the yarn in the crochet hand
I have that problem!! Great tips ...

Why are my purl stitch rows longer that knit rows?
@SuzanneBryan
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Grace! It sounds like you may have issues with your tension, I'm including two video below that discusses tension (2nd vid is just about purls). Without seeing your work, I suspect that you are tighter on the knit side and looser on the purl side. Hope these help, kzread.info/dash/bejne/gaOFtpd_ZM_TesY.html (and) kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHd2zJijgazaY7Q.html
The Germans always slip the first stitch. Why is that? Is it also a solution?
@SuzanneBryan
3 жыл бұрын
There are times to slip the first stitch and times to not slip the first stitch. If you are going to be picking up stitches along that edge, or seaming, do not slip the first stitch. If it is going to be a finished edge, then slipping is fine. 🧶
