Fixing Horses Who Pull Back

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Using the Functional Tie Ring to get horses who pull back better at standing tied. This video is meant to supplement the article on www.functionalhorsemanship.com
Using the tie ring, the lead rope feeds through the ring allowing the horse to pull back but provides an immediate release when there is a pause in the pull back. I always do this to my horses before I ever hard tie as it reduces the chances of them getting into trouble when hard tied. They learn they don't have to pull back or they can stop and the pressure goes away. After hooking the lead through the Functional Tie Ring, I use the least amount of pressure, such as with a flag, to get them to pull back in the friction provided controlled manner. I take the stimulus away, give them a minute to think it over as I rub on them, re-tighten the lead, and begin again. If you are consistent with your approach, the horse will pull back less and less, eventually not pulling back. Before you try this on a horse who pulls back, read the article, check to see if the lead you are using feeds through the tie ring easily enough, and best case if you get a horse competent person to help you the first time as there is potential to get you or your horse hurt if you don't do about this in a particularly careful way.

this is excellent! my horse has broken halters, lead snaps and run off with my deck from spooking while tied. quick release only tightens when horse pulls back, but teaching him how to stand is excellent! ****Please make a video on dealing with overly alert horses? not spooky exactly, but horses on the constant lookout for monsters, and teaching them to relax (mine is like this even in his pasture, and he's near top of the herd!)

Like the honesty of this demonstration. Not hiding anything re the horse's behavior. I like blocker ties. Though we teach our foals by hard tying them very early on. Then move onto blocker tie as I can take anywhere with me. I once had two older mares, not bred by me, who pulled back horribly. They were too old to hard tie. The blocker tie cured the problem. The comment about tying to a horse float is not relevant when using a blocker tie as this horse is not hard tied. I would agree with the comment if the house were hard tied.

Neat video! Think this is a great way to teach a horse to tie confidently. I've also heard about using something strong but stretchy to let the horse move a little if he gets scared. I have seen too many videos of people hard tying with only about a foot of rope and then intentionally spooking the horse. What usually follows in those videos is a sustained pullback where the horse doesn't stop fighting the tie.

I've got a horse no one on earth can fix When tied, his eyes get three times normal size, and he shoots back like a Howitzer shell going off. Everything a horse can muster in a thousandth of a second.BAM!!! surprised he hasn't broken his own neck. it is not defiance or he doesn't want to work, it is sheer Terror that he is feeling. he thinks he's going to die horribly Untie him and all the fear evaporates that moment and it's like nothing ever happened. it just shuts off like a light. I've had him four years and I tack him up just holding the lead rope. He's fine that way. I've tried at length to cure him but nothing will work.

Get a heavy nylon halter, and a heavy rope. Tie him to an "open view" solid post or telephone pole - not to a wall or trailer where he can't see 360°. Once he settles down ON HIS OWN give him some treats. Make sure you or no one else is freaking out with the horse - stand and calmly watch or just walk away so he knows you're not causing his issue. A few times of this should break the habit. If not, then saddle him, lead him to the post/pole, tie up a front foot and tie him up. If he goes down stretched out on the rope - let him lay there for a few minutes and calm down and figure things out, then get him up and DO IT AGAIN IMMEDIATELY - and do it until he LEARNS to stand. Any horse can learn - and (no offense intended) when people say "my horse can't be fixed" they're just saying "I have no clue what I'm doing".

I'm confused, isn't this teaching a horse to pull back in order to release the pressure? Horses pull and are able to move away from whatever they are scared of right? Don't we want to teach them that pulling doesn't result in a release of pressure?

  • @kristakerr2624

    @kristakerr2624

The key is in the pressure he puts on the horse with the flag. As long as the horse pulls back he still applies pressure. But, as soon as the horse stops pulling back, the pressure goes away, teaching the horse that coming forward or at least not pulling back is the only way to have relief from the pressure. Great video. Easy to get, very helpful. Cheers from down under 👍🤠

That exactly what I was thinking. By giving the horse the ability to pull the rope through the ring, and lengthen their own rope, you can teach the horse that when they pull, the rope will get longer... the key is the timing when releasing the pressure from the bag... if you release too early, than all you're teaching is pulling is the right answer... but if you're waiting until the horse stops pulling, then it can teach them pulling is the wrong answer.. I think it depends on the horse, and how good you are with pressure/release timing

brokenandcracked this video is useless in my mind because I never tie a horse while im sacking them out I hold the rope in one hand and the flag in the other and let them move showing them that it doesn’t hurt and moving doesn’t get them away from the pressure. Hello Ponyabout Town. The trailer in the video is 3,600 lbs. Even my stoutest horse, a 1,350 pound 15.2 HH QH could not budge that trailer pulling sideways. A common lead rope snap or the halter itself would break well before Super Horse could pull a trailer sideways. Having said that, when using a common yacht braid lead rope with my Functional Tie Ring, the lead rope will begin to pull through and around the bevel on the tie ring at 18 pounds pressure. Newer and stiffer lead ropes would require additional pulling pressure but certainly not 800 lbs which is the weight of the roan in the video. Appreciate your caution, it is always appropriate to be more cautious than not, but unwarranted in this case.

Should have a neck collar on, ropes inflict way too much pressure on nerves etc. The thinner the rope the more pressure on the horse. This would have caused major soreness to that horses poll. Neck collars take pressure off the poll area and release and support. This way is forcing the horse through fear first. There are far better ways than this. Unfortunately

You tie a horse to keep them from going somewhere. These tie rings basically teach a horse TO PULL BACK!!! You tie him up, put on the pressure, he pulls back, you release pressure, and then reward him. Lesson learned. "He wants me to pull back when I am scared." I agree with just about all of the training methods used now days vs. old school methods, but I am sorry the only solid way to teach a horse to not pull back is still old school. Hard tie them right away with something that won't break. They learn really quick that it does no good at all to pull back. Yes you do run the risk of injuring the horse, but this is the only way to guarantee they'll never pull back, and maybe hurt, or kill a person. I have seen a horse pull back that was tied to a trailer at a rodeo, and damn near killed a little kid that was walking by. I'd rather risk killing the horse by PROPERLY teaching them to NEVER pull back, then kill a person. I'll say it again, THESE STUPID TIE RINGS TEACH HORSES TO PULL BACK!!!

You should watch the video again. The gentleman said you do not release the pressure of the flag until the horse stops pulling back or shows some sign that he is going to stop pulling back. This method helps the horse desensitized to the pressure without injury. I think the person kept this video short for viewers sake, but in a real training you would keep doing it or you would do another, or as many sessions as needed to show the horse pulling is not necessary. The trainer said this but may not have been as clear as it needed to be. I had a horse that got hit by a tarp that blew on an extremely windy day while tied and started to pull as well as be scared of anything blowing. I had to desensitize to a flag 8 times(did it in 9 days) and because my release was correct, he is actually a calmer, quieter horse now than before the tarp incident.

Why are you flagging a tied horse? And you taught him to pull back by coming at him with the flag in front of you like look at this scary thing I have if you don’t move it’s going to hurt you.

I wonder why he’s pulling back, you’re freaking shaking A flag at him..Seems fine otherwise. You should be teaching him to stand still not to pull back

Equine Emmy but not for use when the horse is tied hold the rope in one hand and the flag in the other and let him move he will see it doesn’t hurt and he can’t get away from it by moving as soon as he tries to stop as he will if you have done your other ground work properly then shop the flag and let him release, there’s lots wrong with this video other than the tied horse when flagging the way he moves at the horse with the flag is telling the horse look what I have and if you don’t move it will hurt you. He taught this horse to be scared of the flag in the first two tries cause he stopped when the horse moved.

Get a rope the same as you have there; put a Honda in one end; put the lasso around his girth; run the rope between his front legs and tie him up to a solid post or rail; give him a good tap on the nose; then watch him grunt when he tightens the rope right up around his girth (just make sure that the rope can readily loosen when the pressure comes off) ; Do that a few times and that’ll stop his farting in church!

Yesterday I witnessed a horse rear, fall to the side and die from head injuries when being trained for hauling back. The trainer hard tied the horse with a lead rope and cotton rope tied around the girth and through the legs. The horse was so frightened she froze then jumped straight up and over. It was the end of her 7 years. I had suggested to the owner to get a tie ring the day earlier. She brought the horse to a trainer instead who believed his methods would work. Very sad. I’d have gotten the tie ring as I’ve seen it in my trainer’s barn and she explained it was in case a horse hauled back and not injure itself.

Kimberley Gager He’s really not. Seeing a small amount of rib does not equal an underweight horse.
