Fixing Dragon Ball Super's BAD Artwork | EPISODE ONE | The Anatomy of Anime

Dragon Ball Super has had some bad animation throughout the years, but I'm sure you're all aware of that. Today myself, anime ajay and trev are gonna correct some of Super's worst artwork into the styles of the animators that worked on the show.
We will be correcting some Goku's, Freeza's, Gohan and Vegeta. I'm very excited to share this with you! This might not be Dragon ball Z but it's Dragon Ball Super perhaps how it might have looked had the circumstances been different :)

    Thank you, holy shit thank you, for not picking on in-between frames. It drives me mad when people pick apart animation based on these frames solely made to ease the key frames together. Squash and stretch are parts of animation too, and while in motion they look great, when paused you get some interesting results. A lot of people see these as being 'poorly drawn', when in reality its just meant to be seen in motion. Wahhh so thank you very much for clarifying that.

  • @AkameGaKillfan777

    @gri22ly100 Sorry but I just don't think you remember how bad Z got from time to time, maybe you should go back and check, because there's plenty of horrible face shapes, eyes and body proportions to look at. I'm not defending Super's animation, I'm just saying even if Z had its awesome moments, it also had horrible out of model ones too, just like Super. Denying this is just straight lying or you haven't seen Z in a while.

    I can take the bad animation IF Toei actually took responsibility by admitting they rushed the whole thing or just not say anything at all. They didn’t give animators enough time and expect to see good results. When they didn’t get it and instead got criticism for it, they decide to blame the people they put so much pressure on and forced an impossible deadline on. The animators are already underpaid, most likely overworked, they’re stressed, they’re not getting any recognition or credit and now they got more pressure loaded on them because their own company and ignorant fans are blaming for essentially being human and not being able to make good quality stuff in such a short amount of time. I just hope future episodes and series in this franchise will be given more time to be finished and polished. Just hoping.

    20 minutes per episodex60 seconds per minute= 1200 seconds. Episodes run at 24 frames per second, and drawings tend to fluctuate on how long they're on screen. That's around 3-4 drawings if it were consistent in every scene, hower t,he series has a lot of still shots when characters aren't talking, moving or fighting, whereas the scenes with actual movement have several images that last around 2-4 fps, or 6-12 drawings. But of course, frames get reused.

    thank you very much for bringing to your viewers attention that there is a difference between keyframes and in between frames! This is very important because I often see people post in betweens as examples of "bad animation" when in reality those in between frames could be smoothing out a scene and making it great when viewed at full speed. I would also like to add that in these in between frames we can often find squash and stretch techniques being used and this may make the frame look weird and "bad" but when viewed with the rest of the frames (and at full speed) are actually very important to the smoothness and overall artistic quality of the animation

    @MultiTarded it's quite an aggressive take on this style. Sure, the shadow colours are more symbolic than thought out, but the time constraints are a thing. People like to point out the decline in quality over the years, but they fail to notice that the attention span of modern audience is too short. While methods and habits of watching have evolved with the internet (allowing binging almost anything in one-two nights) increasing the pressure to produce more content in the same amount of time, the drawing process suffers from insufficient technological progress which means lowering quality standards. Animators are forced to digitalise and simplify most of their work not because of laziness, but because they are fighting for attention of people who would watch ten less polished shows while they try to make one the way you'd prefer.

    Funnily enough, after hearing about them a few times, I decided to look up the differences between key and smear frames, and yeah, I saw several frames people complained about in the video which were the latter. Smears are supposed to show movement in an exaggerated and flashy way, without needing to draw extra frames to make it seem more realistic. In action shows they're meant to make fights look more fast-paced and frantic. It's a pretty good example of "less is more" imo. Some scenes characters don't even have faces, but it's not an issue as long as they're in the distant background, which was a bit of a problem at the beginning of DBS I can admit. And of course, there's still people out there who don't understand the difference between art and animation quality. Trying to criticize each frame because it doesn't "look good" is missing the point of animation, which is how said frames show movement.

    John Kisaragi I would say that 5 hours and 13 minutes is a decent amount of time and you could definitely finishing something good in that time. It's slow to mark but not to others. It's just a matter of what you think is slow or not slow.

  • @AK-jt7kh

    @@tannerthepanman9202 Yeah but it's not about finishing "something good". It is about replicating someone else's style, and doing it with precision. I could do a good line art drawing in a few hours, if I'm allowed to draw according to my style. I really don't know many artists who can comfortable emulate someone else's drawing without taking quite a bit of care and time to do so.

  • @tannerthepanman9202

    @tannerthepanman9202

    A K to clarify I am referring to someone emulating someone else’s style. You may not personally know artists who couldn’t do it in 5 hours and 13 minutes, but there are millions of artists out there who might be able to with accuracy and Precision. My argument is this: To mark that time is slow and to others it may seem fast. It comes down to what YOU perceive as significant or not a significant amount of time. Plus mark had a reference of the pose he was drawing. I would also argue some of your style will go into the art style you’re emulating whether it’s small minute details such as a line stroke or something else.
