Transforming Dragon Ball Super into Dragon Ball Z | EPISODE #2 | The Anatomy of Anime

Ойын-сауық

Dragon Ball Super has had some bad animation throughout the years, but I'm sure you're all aware of that. But have you thought about how the artstyle and colours play into the vibe? Myself, Editor San, Anime Ajay and Trev are gonna transform some of Super's best artwork into the style of Dragon Ball Z's best.
We will be changing some Goku's, Freeza's, Gohan and Ultra Instinct. I'm very excited to share this with you! This might not be Dragon ball Z but it's Dragon Ball Super perhaps how it might have looked had the circumstances been different :)

The spirit sword Trunks piece makes me realize something. There was a serious lack of interesting battle damage in super. At the end of a major fight Goku would usually take off his shirt as a formality but you didn’t get a lot of the unique and interesting looks that you saw in Z. Things like Goku just wearing his undershirt when he first goes super saiyan, Vegeta’s chest window after Krillen blew a hole through his torso, and Gohan’s half gi he wore during the father son kamehameha are all iconic looks that immediately spring to mind. I know it’s an odd thing to focus on but costumes changing over the course of a battle adds a sense of momentum and progress to the battle that a lot of Super lacked.

That's part of my complaint regarding the lack of blood in Super. It's all too clean and does a lot to devalue the already low stakes. Sure, Vegeta had his armor and top blown off by the end of the ToP, but without the blood and battle damage he looks like he was in the middle of some intense personal time with Bulma, not the end of a knock-down drag-out life or death battle for survival.

To this day I am still extra salty how stupid is was to just let Black have NO significant visual battle damage in his arc. His piece of clothing had potential to be one of the most interesting ones in regards to battle damage. I mean come on, did nobody at the studio think for a second “well he looks skinny and is wearing long sleeves under his gi…maybe we should burn off the top part of his gi and add some cuts to the sleeves? Since , you know, he is taking nukes to the face each episode?”

Yeah, the whole “no blood” thing is because Japanese broadcasting tastes have changed regarding how much blood should be depicted in anime for children. Super was such an anime, aired at a 9AM timeslot, as opposed to DBZ at a 6-7pm timeslot. So while the DBZ anime was designed for older audiences, Super was designed for an audience of early morning kids. Which sort of explains a lot more than just “no blood.”

4:53 one thing that's interesting to me is how the style change honestly increased the fluidity of cabbas overall design as well. Cabbas clothes looked so boring and flat in the show and it was very difficult even telling what his clothes were even made with because of how basic and simple it looked. Trev did a really good job interpreting the weird purple waistcloth as a really flowy type of fabric, and completely changing the plate on cabbas chest to more closely resemble old saiyan armor, which makes his design much more familiar. The change in color gave him so much more life as well

My favorite part about this is while Cabba is still small in the redrawn he's more of a lean build but still clearly muscular compared to his original super design teen Gohan is a great example of someone who can be small but still have muscle in The DB art styles which was nailed in the redraw Cabba still looks like someone who can throw hands but isn't jacked like other members in the cast giving him a more precision striker build compared to just HIT IT TILL IT DIES like other Characters tend to look

Caba hands down, because with Caba you get so many vibes from Teen Gohan super saiyan 2, and its just such a good throwback, I wish Caba's character had this style still and had more to go for universe 6, I want Caba to have his own story too, while sure, not being the strongest, he tries getting that far, because Vegeta encourages him, just a cool thought I guess that I think of.

FINALLY SOMEONE TALKS ABOUT SATO!! Sato’s art is just perfect to me. He masters the design by giving a powerful look to the characters but also keeping parts of the original designs from DB. And the angular look of the face just tells how serious the show is trying to be. I felt later artists tried making things to rounded and ended up looking soft. I love how the muscles don’t look super bulky in this style as well. Especially the peck muscles. If you look at Goku in the Buu ark, his pecks are just popping out of his gi. This style with the more angular collar bones and neck area just looks better to me. Not to mention his SSJ look has my favorite color pallet. White yellow with the more magma looking aura. Love it. Please keep doing more of these.

It's captivating to listen to all the knowledge, history, and trivia behind each drawing and style; and the critique of the series (and others) demonstrates the level of thought when analyzing the media. What does surprise me a bit is I have yet to see any sort of artistic critique of the Dragonball Fighterz game through his eyes; and given the obvious background experience, I think it would make for a good watch to see what his thoughts are regarding how it captures the feel of the show. Obviously it is two completely different forms of media and each have drastically different goals and limitations, but he has such an efficient way of structuring thoughts and applying analogies that I think he would be able to make a really good video out of it while covering something I don't think he has before.

these are absolutely some of my favorite videos on the entire internet. i learn so much as someone who doesnt practice or study art, its so nostalgic to see, and you guys choose such interesting frames! I actually thought the vegeta from Res F was super old style feeling to me, and damn if Frost wasn't vile/alien looking in absolutely the best way possible, really displays his untrustworthiness i felt. great video as always from content to editing!

One thing I'd like to point out is that the auras (like in the SSJ Rose drawing) were given their ''pointy'' dbz style back, but in DBS the god forms have this more curvy aura as an artistic choice to difference divine KI from normal KI, I think these auras should've been adapted aswell and not just completely replaced by the old ones
