“It’s not our job to make something realistic; it’s to make it CLEAR.” I cannot stress enough just how important this is. Realism is great; being able to replicate real life is amazing! But it’s not the standard you should always necessarily be shooting for. AND THAT’S OK! EDIT: Should’ve mentioned this before: under no circumstances does this mean learning realism and the fundamentals of art is unnecessary. Learn the rules before you break them!!!

I'd go a step further and say that hyper-realism defeats the whole purpose of art (for me). At that point, might as well take a photo and throw on a filter for the same exact result, and at a fraction of the time. If you have the ability to create an infinite number of worlds that can't exist in reality, why would you use that ability to simply replicate reality?

  • @happyslowpoke8982

otacon1024 I can certainly see your point there. Hyper-realism is a relic of past eras where artists were limited by their tools. Yet it’s still a form of expressionism; a form of art that carries meaning at least to someone

I’ve seen comics, animations, and concepts from artists that don’t have the most technical ability yet, but they get better with time while they’re working on that project. There will always be more for you to learn and part of being confident in your work is learning to be okay with that. Story is more important than the art, if the story is good, the art can be on the rough side and people wont critique you..unless you act like you are the shit and your art is A tier that is. Not everyone is going to be the best when they start, so many mangaka improve during their runs and the begining art is far below the ending art. Whats more inportant is that you can keep drawing and be consistant with drawing your comic. Theres never a time as an artist that you will feel 100% comfortable..its something Ive had to learn because I too have always thought like that and while my art has improved, I also wasted a lot of years that I could have been making stories. Personally I think its admirable for anyone who can make a comic because it IS a lot of work and its hard to keep motivated. For me its hard to be consitant so I admire even people who have less technical skill because they are still able to pump out page after page while I get artist block and bored so quickly. Anyway as an artist, you will always be growing and if someone points out that you can improve on something, take the criticism and try to improve, criticism is SUPPOSED to be about helping each other grow not tearing each other down like a lot of people either try to do or others take it as. We all make mistakes and the only way we learn is for someone else to point them out, either in our own work or in someone elses. So just do you and watch yourself improve..you shouldnt worry too much about messing up because art is supposed to be fun at the end of the day and because you WILL learn and grow as you go on.

I am beyond saving, but there is still hope for you. STOP THINKING! DO! If you keep overthinking it, your progress will stall and you'll end up like me, no progress in 700 years. Go, draw your comic! If it's not all you imagined, draw the next one! Save yourself!

vianjelos Thisssss right here is correct for example one punch mans original webtoon had art that wasnt top tier and its one of the most successful animes. So what made one punch man into a famous anime/manga from a low quality webtoon? Story. Story is one of the biggest keys to unlock that door.

I feel like people are always going to be trash to each other online even if you’re really talented. I know it’s scary, but in a sense it’s unfair to not share your talents with the world. Society needs art and creatives because our work can change the world. Don’t let a few stupid or negative comments keep you back, show us what you’re doing. I think the art community as a whole can be super supportive, there’s some subgroups of it that can be gatekeepy, but overall everyone’s super chill and motivating. We only go to war when someone’s art gets stolen and aren’t afraid to call people out on their shit when they’re being downright awful. I used to never comment on KZread videos, but on art videos it’s nice. People actually respond and create helpful discourse. Talking to people in the art community versus other communities online is such a different experience. I think if anyone were to tear you apart it would only be helpful feedback to help you grow, and even then most people won’t give that unless you’re asking for critiques.

6:00 Actually, martial artists do throw kicks like that. I'm not great at drawing art just yet but from a martial art view, the character should only fix their posture. The reason it doesn't look natural is that it isn't, she is leaning too far into the kick, all of her weight is forward and off-balanced. Same with the guy, all of his weight is forward, his leading leg should be bent at about a ninety-degree angle. (They could fall) About the reference you pulled up; That kid is probably wearing that orange belt for a reason, in my opinion, that isn't a good kick to be throwing out there against experienced opponents. Yes, he's obviously doing it for the pose itself but if you get caught like that you'll be tumbling to the ground in no time. (Realistically; Bad / Artistically; Good) However; this is Art. Art exaggerates the body all the time, it is an artistic expression. From drawings to forms of Kata, art is a way to express yourself and build inner character. We have a thing for when we mess up in the middle of our Katas. "Fake it until you make it." Keep going, if the Kata looks 'good' and the judges don't know your particular style, well...They thought it was good, right? I believe it to be the same for drawing, just keep practicing. It will look good eventually.

@@opreacodrut8011 The kick he drew was a different type of kick as compared to that in the reference. Martial artists have a variety of kicks in their arsenal (and in my rather limited experience, the type of kick he originally drew is the more realistic one as compared to the one in the reference)

Yup yup, it just seems to be a roundhouse, but usually when you throw those you keep over the center line (your base foot). It makes the art look like she’s pointing her foot at something, not throwing a kick. This is one of the fun parts of practicing martial arts and being an artist ngl. His advice of actually doing the kicks and stuff is spot on, it helps a lot.

@@opreacodrut8011 saying “they dont throw kicks like that” is still misleading, it leads you to believe that it isn’t really any kind of kick, when in actuality, its just her posture that needs fixing.

i don't really draw, but i have to tell you that your advice in the beginning transcends all art forms. i'm a musician, so when performing, i want to play a piece perfectly. however, when i'm done my performance all i can get hung up on are the mistakes and i continually beat myself up over it. it's comforting to hear that you can get hung on those mistakes, but you move on and do better next time. thank you so much for being an inspiration, not just for the art community, but all other kinds of art.
