Yeah this is a common problem and I was amazed at how so little information was out there to clearly explain the problem! Or anyone to show how the mechanism worked! Was so frustrating!

Could be, only way to tell is to remove the cover.

2008 Avalanche But I did not find the part for the tailgate handle! If you know the part number please advise me :)

The 08 changed. 02-04’s are the same. You might have to keep googling or go talk to local auto store

how did you modify the latch to fasten those rods with nuts? those plastic retaining clips are the dumbest thing I've ever seen

I just found some small nuts I had laying around and it screwed right in.
