This Chic fixed a 2003 Chevy Avalanche Tailgate handle

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

2003 Chevy Avalanche tailgate handle broke. This video will show you how to take it off and replace it in detail. Have a screwdriver, T27 and T25 bit, a tiny flat head (to open clips if you can't do it with your fingers) and patience ready. Sorry I didn't always have the camera pointed in the best direction!
Note 1: Some people, including the person who replaced mine several years ago, will cut part of the plastic off on the bottom left area to give more room to remove and replace. It does not affect anything. I do not mention this in the video, but do know that yours may be in it's original condition and it will make it harder to take it out and put new one in. However people have been able to accomplish it, it just takes more effort.
Important Note 2: First attempt at installing new piece I failed to make sure retainer clips were in the correct position. The person who replaced it prior had them upside down and actually never locked properly either, so be sure to have your clips OPEN from the TOP, not the bottom. I originally thought it was due to locking connections on the sides of the tailgate that keep it closed. This starts around 3:10, so you can fast forward to 5:50. Otherwise you can watch and get more information about the side locks in case that is also a problem on your tailgate.
Note 3: Someone brought to my attention that when they had theirs replaced, it no longer locked. I haven't locked mine in years so I went to try it out and sure enough, mine won't lock either. Unsure if it is a part problem and if you don't have an OEM part, it won't be able to lock. If anyone knows, please share!
GOOD LUCK and thanks for watching!!

Good job! I almost tried this myself, but I don't have a spare five hours, as I bet I'd need a few more. I took it to a body shop. Now it doesn't lock. They say my new part didn't have the locking mechanism, but I'm pretty sure it did. Does yours still lock?

That is a good question! I haven't locked my it in years. It's 2am, so I'll try to remember to check it this weekend.

So I haven't locked my tailgate in years, and you're right, it does not lock. Not sure what the reason would be, I don't remember there being different choices on locking or not. Thanks for asking, otherwise I would not have known! I'll post that information

hmmm... does the clip close by itself without the rod in it? If not, then it would need replaced, but if it does, then I'm not sure changing the clip will make a difference. Make sure the clip is in the right position. I had it backwards the first time. Or maybe the rod is too far one way or the other. ? Clips should be cheap I would think though.
