Fixing and Using a 4,1 Mac Pro in 2024

Ғылым және технология

I have been sitting on this video for several days, searching forums, looking at the diagnostic LEDs and I am fairly confident there is something wrong with the CPU tray. Unfortunate, but not unexpected from a 15 year old computer.
Yes I will be upgrading this thing, give me a suggestion to a computer I should compare to, I am thinking an M1 Mac mini seems appropriate.

@@techno_eclipse I’ve broke a couple of iPhone screens like that trying to replace the battery… the amount of money I’ve spent fixing my own problems

Now you're talking! I have a Mac 4,1 flashed to a 5,1 one processor w/thunderbolt 3/NVMe M.2/RX 6600 running OpenCore. The only issue is it runs at over 200 watts. I imagine two processors brings it up to the 300 plus watts like my dual 3,1. Not an issue unless you keep it up all the time like me. For that Intel MacMini's with egpu do the trick. It's sooo much fun, and sometimes challenging, upgrading these bad boys. Can't wait to see the results!

I am looking forward to it as well! Yeah the biggest drawback is how many watts these old systems pull. The M series pull 10% or less than these. Does not change how awesome these things are

I still have four of this machines in use. And if you want to make it useful for a few more years, you can... Flash the 4.1 to a 5.1 / insert two X5680 or X5690 / add 48 oder 96 GB Ram / add a M2 SSD (WD with SN850X-controler) on a cheap PCIe-traycard / insert in a GFX-Card with Metal2-Support (may a RX6600 or a RX6800 for heavyer videoeditingstuff) / add a new Monterey-compatible BT/WLAN-Chip / put MacOS Monterey on the Mac Pro 5.1 ...and you can use this machines easliy as an everydaysystem for all your work in the next 3-4 years.

According to Everymac, the highest fully supported Mac OS version for this machine in it's current configuration is OSX 10.9 "Mavericks". OSX 10.11 "El Capitan" is compatible (As in, you can install it, and it will run) but, as you discovered, may not be fully functional. It also says that MacPro 5,1 is capable of running up to OSX 10.13 (High Sierra) but will again not really be fully functional past OSX 10.9 ("Mavericks being the last fully supported OS for that hardware)

Is that true? So that’s just a handful of years of support? Oh well, good thing the old Mac Pro scene is very large

Install Linux instead, that’s based on UNIX, just like OSX is. That’s what I’ve done with mine. It works. You say “the computer doesn’t work” for the applications you want. The computer WORKS, the problem is that Apple won’t let you install the required OS, so change to Linux, that’s open source and no more corporate limitations. That’s dual processor machine with 8 RAM slots it’s still a good machine 👍🏽

Mfs when you replace all of the parts and build a new computer and are then surprised that by building another computer they have fixed their issue:
