Fixing a Rough Idle on My Land Rover Discovery LR3 [Part 2]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I attempt to fix a rough, oscillating idle on my 2005 Land Rover LR3 (Discover 3). I also tackle some other maintenance items and replace the rear hatch struts.

Great video. Some advice when cleaning an electronic throttle body, never force the butterfly open, it can seriously ruin it. If you turn the key to 2nd position and press the gas pedal it will open. Use a heavy object if you don’t have help

You should’ve mentioned that if you’re going to clean the throttlebody you should also clean the mass airflow sensor which is right next to the air filter. Also, if you’re going to change the spark plugs out on an LR3 you first need to disconnect all of the coils and if it’s running rough it’s worth checking that all of those coils are firing correctly, then change the spark plugs 👊

Hi Waldo, I own the same Disco 3 V8, which was the better choice compared to the 2.7TDV6, that tends to spill its guts by the roadside on a too regular basis. I'm with you when it comes to diesel, and it is always my first choice. If I had the time and expertise, I would buy a discarded TDV6, and fit a Ford 3.2 DuraTorq i5. Engine management I assume would be "easier" to marry because they are from the same company, and most protocols and sensors should remain identical. You probably won't be able to put your hands on one in the US, but something to consider. I'm eager to see how you solve the electronics headache with the swap. All the best, I'll be following your videos!

Great episode, watching in the UK👍I have seen on another disco videos, people removing the air suspension and installing a traditional spring system, it even comes with a module to tell the discos electrics, it has air suspension. May be an option for you and less maintenance down the road. I prefer diesel too, much easier to maintain and a lot less issues.

Thank you! Yeah, the replacement cost for the traditional spring shocks is about the same as replacing the air bags. I think this vehicle has made it 130k miles on original air suspension, so I think I'll fix that up and get another 100k+ miles out of it 👌

The air suspension is what makes it an LR3! Sacrilege converting it coils! Its really not that complicated a system. Compressor, reservoir, 4 x air bags, 4 x sensors and 2 valve blocks. In 200,000 miles, mine has all original components, although I did rebuild the compressor with new piston and billet end cap.

Unfortunately it also was coupled with the fact the car needed a full tune up (the LR3 sat for about 5 years unused before i bought it). Legitstreetcars did a little tuning on one in a E320, but I don't think many have tapped it's true potential. Bottom end is pretty similar to a OM606.

Great video, awesome work you do, I admire your courage to tackle such a complicated beast. A few pointers for you, as I have owned a Range Rover Sport for the last 15 years ('06) and have learned a few things along the way. The ZF transmission is very good. The centre differential is always open and it will only lock (electronically) when using any of the Terrain Response programs. Otherwise you can get cross axles on Normal drive mode and get stuck and embarrassed. This Jaguar engine is great (earlier models had a BMW problematic engine), once you get it sorted out it will be more that enough, and it works well with the rest of the components. DON"T change it! You need to clean or change the MAF sensor (cheap and easy). Change all the ignition coils as well , because if one of them goes the car goes into limp mode all of a sudden and you don't want to be caught out in the bush. The emergency break releases automatically when you press the accelerator, and in case it gets stuck there's a manual release cable inside the cabin. Watch out for the break lines because they rust and can break. CHANGE them to be sure. The air ride is ok, but error prone. Ride height sensors, compressor problems, leaky airbags, all kinds of problems! Replace them with O.M.E. coil overs and the ride is awesome and worry free! The parking break needs to be adjusted every time you change the breaks and rotors, there's a special procedure you have to perform to let the vehicle adjust itself to it as well. If the controller in the back breaks down (the plastic cogs wear out and chip), it's a pain in the ass to replace. Another thing you'll need to check and possibly replace , is the control arms and bushings, front and back. It's a heavy vehicle and they wear out. Also replace the radiator thermostat and sensor, as it will throw an engine light soon enough. If I think up of something else I'll tell you next time. Good luck, best regards from Canada. :)

Don't forget to give the MAF and MAP a little squirt as well.. by-poduct of low compression! Hasn't happened to me but from what I read the brake light switch sends things into a tantrum. Not sure if your tool does it but the IID Tool allows you to reset adaptives on trans and steering wheel angle.. My dash was lit up like a Christmas tree as well but really not too much drama. The low coolant will be the float which is rotten and not serviceable; a tank from RockAuto, I think a Doorman replacement was pretty cheap. Thanks for the vid,

@@WaldosWorld If the compressor has never been serviced pretty much 100% sure you'll have to replace the air dryer beads. Pretty easy job just gotta pop the cover off 3 bolts then drop the compressor with 3 more bolts. The front 2 hoses are easy but leave the rear 2 large hoses for after the compressor is unbolted then you can pull down on the compressor while pushing up on the locks. If you try to do the rears with compressor in it can be impossible. 1 screw to take the dryer off, twist and pull. You can replace the beads for like 5 bucks but a kit with the filter pads isn't much more. You really have to have a good look at the plastic on the dryer cap between the air fittings for a hairline crap. Best bet is buy the kit that replaces the beads and cap with new o-rings. Also take the case off the electric motor and pray it out with some electrical contact cleaner and barring leaks your suspension will be fine.

I've only found one option so far. The electrical issue is probably from some corroded wires cause by a water leak, most likely from the sunroof, but also could be from bad seam sealer on the roof body seams or from the windshield adhesive.

What are you thoughts on the OM 642? The 648s successor ? I only ask because looking at the diesel engines that Mercedes has produced over the years, this one has stood the test of time, the 606 & it’s successors have had pretty short production runs between 4 & 6 years whereas the 642 is still in production since 2005 !

  • @WaldosWorld

    @WaldosWorld

I do like the long production run for sure! There are a couple things I don't like about it though. I have a personal preference for inline engines vs V engines (the straight-6 in particular is great because of its inherent balance and torque). Inline engines are usually easier to work on because there's more access to the sides of the engine. Second, the OM642 has modern emissions garbage like DEF and DPF, which is very undesirable to me

Waldo , do you have a yearly state inspection in N.H. The reason I ask for example .. here in N.Y. the inspection is done using the A.L.D.L. connector and tail pipe test on Diesels . If the check engine light is on . The computer (inspection mach) will not allow the test to move forward .. If the car or truck is over 25 years old than it is just a safety test . ( light wipers brakes ect) I lot of guys here have a lot of problems when they modify a car under 25 years old Also you need a valid Inspection to keep the car registered here in NYS,.

  • @WaldosWorld

Yeah, we have some of the strictest inspections in the nation here in NH. The state motto "Live Free or Die" apparently doesn't apply to this. We have yearly safety and emissions that are luckily done with OBDII only (no tailpipe). I have some ideas of how to make it work, but I can't say here for legal reasons 😬
