And this shows what the concept of planned obsolescence is all about. A critical part, subject to pressure and lots of friction, made of very cheap plastic. They can make it all metal or a harder better quality plastic but then...it will not fail and the washer will last a long time so less people will replace them and it will mean less profits for them.

Thank you so much for this video. I had the same noise and I went to go look at everything and the nut had backed off the bolt on the pulley and allowed it to drop and disengaged the clutch. so I didn’t even have to replace anything. I’m 3 loads in and everything seems fine! 🎉 this saved me so much bc I’m a broke single mom of four kids and I can’t afford a new washer right now.

Thanks for the video. I just took my Maytag Centennial washer apart and brought these parts to my local appliance dealer/repairman. He said the teeth looked fine so the problem was likely the transmission and would be very costly. I put the same parts back on and made sure the nut was tight. No more grinding. ZERO COST REPAIR!! Thanks again!!

Honestly your Repair man is right! A Transmission can be for this model is usual 400 to 475 for the Repair. He was probably trying to save you money! Look for oil and leaking underneath. If you see oil , usual a sign for a new one. Also would need a belt probably with the Repair.

Fixed my washing machine today because of this video. The kit he refers to / links to from Amazon is actually pretty bad quality. I spent an hour or so messing with the splutch. Once it was in place, the gear would not shift. I eventually went back to the original parts as they weren't broken or worn down. I added a bit of the grease that he mentioned and reinstalled. Gear shifting worked as expected. Once everything was in place, I put the machine back, hooked it up, and ran a Normal Wash cycle. Worked perfectly. Thank you for this video!

Thanks for the video. My Kenmore is only 5 yrs old and the grinding noise started. Thought it was the washplate but couldn't remove the bolt with a ratchet. Called an appliance tech who couldn't remove the bolt either so together with my impact wrench and his adapter got the washplate removed, it was fine, he was baffled. He consulted with fellow techs and concluded it is the gearcase and the cost to replace that is more than half the washer value. I don't know if it IS the gearcase or if it's the clutch.

Is it possible to damage or dislodge the subject parts of this video, if, per-chance, one were to bang on the splined shaft that spins the wash tub while trying to remove the wash tub (due to rust and sludge)? It went back together just fine, but now it makes a noise very seemingly similar to the noise in the video while the tub is being spun back and forth during the wash cycle. I peered underneath it while it was spinning back and forth, and there seemed to be almost parmesan cheese looking shavings coming out from the plastic cover. It sounds ALMOST like it did before I took it apart (I know for certain there were no operational issues), but just seemingly grinding on something. I will try to take the plastic cover off and see if it still has the same issue. I guess I shouldn't have taken it apart if it wasn't broken. But you know.... if it isn't broken, fix it until it is, right?

Great video and information. I have the same issue with a grinding sound mostly during the wash cycle. I was wondering, if i manually spin the agitator and dont hear the grinding, does that mean it is not the clutch assembly or can it still be the clutch assembly even though there is no grinding when I spin the agitator? Thanks for you help??

  • @DuctTapeMechanic

Manually spinning the agitator to test the clutch is going to touch because most of the grinding and slipping occurs at high speeds

Hello friend. I found your video very helpful. I have the same problem but I think it is not the pulley but the gear you lubricate at 5:07. That piece is a whole part or is it just that white part? Do I have to disassemble the whole transmission?

The sound made by the washing machine I use, unlike the one you show in the video, does not follow a pattern but is continuous. It can generate its wash cycle without any problem but when switching to spin it is as if the teeth are not anchoring to each other. Could it be the spring that is worn and does not extend the pulley completely?

Does the link for the part also work for Whirlpool model wtw4855hw2? I didn't see the model on the extensive list and was just curious if it knew that it worked for multiple models including ones not listed on the website?

I would say if you tip the washer on its back and if it looks similar in layout to the one in the video the part will work.

I bought my machine used and it has been making this sound for a couple of years. It is AWFUL. The other day, my machine would not drain completely. After attempting to run diagnostic tests and clear old codes, I ran a test load without anything in it. It didn't agitate at all and the lid never locked. Do you think it didn't lock because it is unable to agitate and spin? I assume the clutch is completely stripped at this point and I will need to replace the transmission, which I know you suggest doing anyway. Any suggestions? Thank you.

My same machine is making the same noise. A great video and easy to follow, however, my clutch assembly looks completely fine with no wear. Could this noise be the cause of a bad transmission or shifter actuator?

  • @DuctTapeMechanic

    @DuctTapeMechanic

A loud metal grinding noise definitely could be a bad transmission. Most of the time this type of noise it is a bad clutch (sometimes the arm gets stuck halfway between shifting from agitate to spin). I think you could get the clutch and the shifter both for about $50 total on Amazon. I would do that first because a transmission is too expensive to replace.

Just a quick update, it turned out to be the drive motor pully, a $15 part... and it was making that same exact noise.

@@angiecarlin5091 yes the pully that js bolted to the transmission shaft can cause this noise. I usually replace it when I replace the clutch. Good work on repairing your washer!

So drive motor pulley causes this same noise? I had the part in this video replaced today by a repair man who's repaired this thing 3x. I thought for sure he'd know but nope. After all his work, still making the same noise 🤷‍♀️

  • @angiecarlin5091

That was what caused my washer to have this noise. It was the drive motor pully, not the transmission pully. It's simply bolted to the bottom of the drive motor. It was quick easy fix. It only took about 10 minutes to replace it and only cost $15 for the part.

Actuator was changed, at times high speed spin/agitate no work Ran both tests (auto, mea😮an) will clear and work 1or2times after recal. Last run 1st ag cycle screach stop. But would drain and spin dry (both speeds) w/ slight screach 1or 2 time. Code 7/1-7/5. Basket looks good.. very slight out of round?

i’m looking to buy a new washer and dryer. I want to know your opinion on what is a good brand to buy that last a long time I’m not looking for bells and whistles I want something that will wash my clothes and get them clean and do the job.

If you are going to buy new I would just buy a whirlpool washer and dryer. The basic ones. You want to make sure the washer has a agitator and the dryer is the one with the lint trap on the top. Also, do not overload the washer otherwise you will strip out the tub in a year and it will shake violently. That's is how I would approach buying a new set. I perfer older used whirlpool/kenmore washers and dryers.

Hello, thanks for the video. We have a maytag model MVWC 416FW1 Type 58820 series 074931525. When our washer is spinning, it sounds like a jet engine. It is really loud. We hear a little grinding but not what was in your video. Do you think replacing with a new clutch kit will help and solve our problem and the part number you posted for amazon will be compatible with our model? Dp you think it could be the bearings? Our washer looks identical to the one in the video. Thanks!!

If it sounds like a jet, then the bearings in your transmission are bad. This requires the transmission to be replaced. I do have a video on that as well. However, it is a costly repair (around $200 if you do it yourself)

Hello Duct Tape Mechanic, PLEASE HELP !!! I have a similar model (Amana NTW4516FW3). It has a problem. The washer still work like it supposed to. Everything works fine until the spin cycle. It made really loud screeching noise at the beginning of the spin cycle (with or without cloth) for about 1 second and disappear after that. No more noise during the spin cycle and until the end of that spin cycle. I took out the tub and no noise (manual spin test). So the screeching noise is only happen when I have the tub lock to the shaft... and I do lock it pretty tight. My initial thought was the tub wasn't tight enough. But that wasn't the case. I don't see any oil leak or water leak. The belt look like new. I have spent many hours searching youtube but I am not able to find anything that matched my problem. What do you think the problem is ?

Thanks for watching. I'll try to improve camera angle in future. I can't exactly say when the problem begins to arise (alot depends on how often you use your washer, how heavy the load, etc), but it is a fairly common issue.

Grease the clutch teeth and replace shifter. Also, check to see if there is back and forth play in the transmission shaft. If there js, you have a bad transmission causing your clutch to missalign (rare but can happen). Good luck with the repair.
