I watched one video of a gentleman and his wife who purchased a used Metropolitan that was slow as well. He removed some type of restrictor in the carb that looked like a credit card with a hole in it that was smaller than the intake, it was some type of restricter. After he removed it the sooter almost reached 40 mph.

Hi Scott, I bought a metropolitan 2 scooter too (2003). Mine went max about 20 mph before I started messing with it. There is a restrictor plate between the carb and the engine which will increase the top speed. The next mod i completed was to replace the variator with a polini 50cc variator. This definitely helped. I can get it up to about 30 mph now so Im looking for the next steps. You probably know this already. Tim

One thing to look for is a small restrictive plate between the intake manifold and the cylinder head. It just cuts off the air flow. Another thing you can do it install Dr. Pulley sliders in the primary clutch. You use 9 gram sliders if you’re about 200lbs or 11 gram if you’re under 200. That will help acceleration tremendously and help it hold speed up hills better. But first look for that restrictor plate.

I’ve had so many issues with my 2020 metropolitan, bought it brand new off showroom floor. Exhaust pipe broke in half and I lost the muffler- the spark plug was stalling the moped in wet conditions. Got a bubble in my tire and then had a bent rim- replaced both. I’ve laid it down three times and it still runs- so I’ll learn to fix everything I can and I’ll sell it and buy a 125cc next. Right now I am trying to put end bar mirrors on- but can’t figure out how to get the end of the grips off to instal the new mirrors

I’ve been working on my dads 2004 Honda Metropolitan. It has over 8,000 miles on it. I replaced the carburetor also with the same one you bought on amazon because rebuilding the carb was going to cost more then the after market one. The new carb main jet doesn’t have any markings on it but it looks to be the same size as the stock one off the old carb. The biggest problem I had with dads metro was the intake valve needing to be adjusted/change shim. I didn’t buy a new shim I just taped a piece of 800 grain sandpaper to a flat surface and sanded it down till I got my .004 clearance. It’s was a lot easier then it sounds. There’s a very good vid on KZread on how to do it. Just search Honda Metro valve adjustment. There’s two parts. If your metro stopped smoking after the oil change and it has over 3000 miles on it I definitely recommend checking the valves. If it’s still smoking then it might need rings.

Bob Cranberries thanks for the tip. Interesting to know about the valve adjustment. I agree the piston ring could be worn also.

@@bobcranberries5853 if you're still having the issue with low speed you might want to check your drive belt

Thx for a nice sharing vid. I also bought a used 2003 Honda Metropolitan in very good condition which I don't need to fix anything. And I can ride it over 40 mph easy and I don't know if previous owner had done anything special to it or not.

I bought a metropolitan for my brother. Recently the starter switch does not turn on the lights or start the moped. You can kickstart it and all the lights and everything work when you kickstart but if you turn ignition key no lights no nothing the battery is good. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks for the video it’s been helpful

I hear that there is a restrictor plate between the intake manifold and the carburetor.

Do you still have the bike? You also need to change out the variator, weights to 4.5 and 5.5 rollers or sliders, get rid of the air box and replace with an intake tube/filter, buy an exhaust, and lastly, add the NCY cdi to get rid of the rev limiter to maximize top speed. Hit me up if you need more help

How to reach you? 2002 honda metropolitan is only having a 30 kmh top. Full throttle bogs down too

Restrictor plate where the intake bolts to cylinder head. It makes an 8-10 mph difference.

Get ready to replace the fuel pump. The new fuel injected NCH50’s have faulty cheaply made fuel pumps. Not typical Honda quality, that’s for sure.
