Thanks a lot for this solution. My boot menu was broken after the SteamOS upgrade, and now is back again: Windows and SteamOS. Thanks! The only issue I found is that I had to connect the Steam Deck to the dock first, and do the fix with mouse and keyboard, because the SteamDeck controllers and trackpad stopped working after the upgrade. But everything is fine now. 😁

Hey how do you get around permission denied

Got it to work. What I had to do was redownload the update and have it change to stable… simple fix.just copy each command one by one. Everyone of them and your good.

what is, if i cant find my refind for steamOS?

I’m having a difficult time with dual booting windows to my created partition. I bought a 2tb ssd image steam os type in the script to get refind. When I’m ready to install windows it doesn’t give me an option to install windows in my newly created partioned. It just boots from the usb? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I updated unknowingly immediately after buying a used one with existing dual boot on marketplace, so I followed the owners suggestion and reimaged steam os. Do you have tips on how to access the windows partition again?

I have a problem. Both os is still in the bios (windows and steamos) but whatever i choose, it will still boot to windows. The same thing happen if i use boot from file. Any idea how to fix this?

What if you never had a dual boot and only bottled from the SD card? My windows 11 was working fine last night but then Steam updated and now I am stuck on preparing automatic repair when I try to boot windows. Please help if you can asap. 🙏🏼

I have dual boot loader page working fine until i shutdown my steamdeck and power on. After that i my steam os unable to boot from thr bootloader page. Only the windows able. I even try to manual boot but fail to boot steam os😮 Any idea? Might it because of the latest steam os update?

I don't know if mine is the same issue but I recently put windows 10 onto a usb SSD through Rufus set it as windows to go NTFS format it burned ok I did the - and power button to boot into the menu to select the os to begin the install but it doesn't show.ive tried 2 drives now and both do the same I am at a loss of what to do now if anyone can help that would be great.

In the same boat all I get is the logo when I boot steamos

I cant do this my controller is not functional on the Steam Deck in the boot menu I tried using the dpad doesnt work.

Also i did run into a problem when Windows would keep taking over the dual boot. You never showed us to the windows part into it so it doesn't keep doing that.

Hi. For some reason reboot from SteamOS takes me to boot options to choose. But not with Windows 11. After reboot it takes me to the windows again without option to choose OS.

@@Khronyn hi, so here is the solution working for me. 1. Using Windows OS install EasyUEFI. 2. In the EasyUEFI tool choose “Manage EFI Boot Options” 3. Disable “Windows Boot manager”. Now my deck boots to rEFInd every time.

@Trembling Hands I was looking all over for this solution and I didn't want to restart, like you said in steam os booted perfect in windows it got locked in windows turn on until you did - power and selected refind or steam os, this fixed my issue and I looked alote of places to fix this thank u

This is the first time I have had this setup break since I first did it. Mine broke too as the update froze. It had to do with not being able to properly use the BTRFS file system. You can repair it with the Steam Recovery Media, but its a complicated process. So even myself having the skills to do that, I just re-imaged for a new start.

Didn't work for me as shown in the video. But I chose a SteamOS folder (as suggested in the video as an option) in the menu and launched Steam efi file and it booted into Steam! Had to reinstall Refind GUI afterwards for it to work as before.

I had the same issue but I’m able to get a USB mouse to work using the official dock made for Steam Deck.

0:37 umm...HOW do I go to the bottom left option? No matter what I do, it chooses windows. Thats the only EFI option I have.

Lmao, just hold the Volume Up (+) instead of Volume Down (-) to bring up that main BIOS menu, TIL

I just tried this but it doesn't work after you boot in to windows. After that it just boots to windows not the dual boot manager? Edit: ok so you need to run the script in recovery boot 👍 , all seems good now

What do you mean by recovery boot? Is that the one loaded from a usb?

The efi isnt even available on mine when i go to boot from file

Mine say error no such device found

It’s the opposite for me windows refuses to boot at all

Still having the same problem when I shutdown in windows it only reboots to windows not the dual boot screen

when i go to /efi/boot/(..)/steamos/steamos.ffi file it doesnt work, i just have backlight and it stays for days

Everyone is praising you in the comments, but you don't even say how to show the list of options in the boot menu. I can't select the lower left option because I don't know how to bring that screen up in the boot menu. I've pressed B just like you did and it just launches windows.

Sadly mine is still broken. It'll work like once but then breaks again after going into windows.

@@Cub__ Nope I managed to fix it. I went into the konsole on steamOS and typed those lines in again. Originally that didn't work so I went into the recovery mode (Booting off a usb stick) and typed them in there. Then it seemed to work. I've now partitioned my micro sd card as well as the internal and have been running for about a month.

My steam doesn’t have any file in (Boot from file)

@@akahee22 Fr?? Were you Duel booted with Windows? I ended up doing it and surprising everything was just fine however it did mess up my Fallout New Vegas TTW Mod and I'm still figuring out how to fix it... It definitely seems as though every major OS update that it will mess some things up unfortunately, that's why I'll wait for even over a Month until more patches come out and things level out and seem safe to do so.

Windows Boom Manager keeps overwriting these changes. I can set rEFInd as the default boot with these steps and then it's gets reset to Windows on the next boot. Anyone have an idea?

You can disable the windows boot manager from the terminal or even from windows. That should fix it, but for me to know exactly what to do. I need to recreate the issue.

That means your boot files or partitions are corrupt. You have a one off problem, nothing wrong with the guide as you can see even this week I have had many people check in saying it worked for them even with the most recent update.

Great this fucked up steam deck even more
