Step 5 rectified the issue on my PC thank for this tutorial other than getting it to work properly ..... I learnt a lot from viewing all the steps well done

Big thank you, none of the other directions I found worked. Step 6 (registry edit) followed by Step 3 (changing what app opens .docx back and forth) fixed the issue.

Thank you, this fixed the error after first editing the registry as you indicated and then changing "Open With" setting to Notepad and then back to Word. Bravo!

Hello, Thank you for your tutorial, it is brillinat. I have this issue in Office 16 running on Windows 10, and I think the registry fix you give might work for me. The only problem is that I doen't see an entry called 'Dox' in the registry drop down tree. When I click on HKEY_ClASSES_ROOT and scroll down, I come to folders called 'docx_auto_file, and below that, 'docxfile'. Inside 'docxfile' there are two other folders, one called 'defaultIcon' and a second called 'shell'. This is the only place where I could possibly make the changes you have discussed, but it could be the wrong location. Do you have any advice please, as no other tutorial I have viewed has a solution as promising as yours? Thanks again. 🙂

Easily move for fast fix: just delete .docx in regedit and again choose as app word
