Sorry for the late response! It finds missing/corrupt files such as sounds or data files then replaces them with the working ones.

It didn't work. Unhandled exception from the Dropbox API thing. Is there no simpler way to install the patch? It doesn't really feel right to give admin rights to a program which could potentially download and install anything, anwyay.

Hello, Thanks for reporting! The problem is fixed in version 2.0 ageofnotes.com/download/aoe2-graphics-fix/ >It doesn't really feel right to give admin rights to a program The reason the program requires admin right is that most people install the game in C drive so admin privileges are required to edit the game files. I could make it not to require admin but it will not work for the majority of user since they have to run it as admin manually. If you are suspicious there is a website virustotal.com/ upload the exe file there to see what it does. The app will only download and extract fixes nothing else.

Download github.com/CnCNet/cnc-ddraw/releases/tag/v4.4.6.0 and extract all the files into aoe2 hd folder make sure the ddraw.dll and ddraw.ini are side by side with Launcher.exe and AoKHD.exe files. This fixes works for aoe2 classic but never tested it on aoe2 hd. But anyways the classic version is reliably smoother than HD and has the most player base in Voobly. There is a guide in my channel kzread.info/dash/bejne/haacy5Ntls26m7A.html that will help you convert your HD to classic version (creates separate installation) in 2 mins + Automatic setup for Voobly. Voobly have released a community patch 1.6 (free) that includes all age of empires 2 definitive edition civilizations and they have a mod center to make the game look better. Most importantly the multiplayer community is active and way bigger than HD.

I haven't tried but theoretically it should work. Keep in my that the graphics fix app requires .NET 4.5 framework so install that too.

Problem I have is that I was playing this game 30mins before this comment I'm making, I turn the game off to make food but desided I'll eat later, go to turn game back on and now getting this... Deside to try it in my laptop instead which I was playing it on yesterday and getting same silly message, tested it on back up laptop and same again,. got no problems playing age of empires one though

Does it work on Age of Empires Rise of Rome? I cant play because of the same error but i can play other expansion but the rise of rome has an error 😢

No, only aoe2! I can give you a few tips though. try them in any order you want. 1. First one would be to search on google "Age of Empires Rise of Rome patches" Install the latest one you find and it would probably fix. 2. Lower your desktop resolution to 800x600 then run the game just to find out if it's a graphics card issue. 3. Find a different complete installer for Age of Empires Rise of Rome because in this video the issue relates to missing files for that reason that error pops up. Keep me updated.

In that case there is a change your game installation is lacking files. Google: Age of empires 2 Gold Edition download that version has no missing files regardless of the small size.

Hello brother, Your game installation is missing one of these folders in your game: "Sound" or "Data" Or even both of them. To get around that error, please create a folder and name it "Sound" or "Data" if they are not there. Then try again as it should work. Normally it's the "Sound" folder that is missing in most old corrupt installations. Keep me posted how it went it and thanks for sharing the bug.

There is a high chance you have two installations of aoe2 or your installation has cd requirement. Find the right aoe2 installer Or Use this tool to patch the game: ageofnotes.com/download/aoe2-switcher/

you can get around that by forcing the game to first launch in actual 640x480 by right clicking the game exe > properties > Compatibility: check "Run as Windows XP SP2" and check 640x480. Click OK. Now run the game and it will run in a small screen, don't worry about it because now you can go to options and switch to your desktop resolution.

Run Userpatch again but this time uncheck window mode from the settings then click update. If that does not help I recommend to you AoE2 Switcher ageofnotes.com/download/aoe2-switcher/ It includes a fix for compatibility. Let me know how that goes.

I remember the "Direct draw error". I used to be a technical support for age of empires 2 at Voobly.com. And that error was very common. Follow the video all the way to end of method 2 (User Patch fix). If "Direct draw error" is not fixed yet.. download a tool called "DirectX Control Panel". Go to DirectDraw and Direct3D tabs and uncheck "Allow Hardware Acceleration" for both tabs. Click apply and ok. Please keep in mind that disabling direct3d and directdraw will prevent most modern games from running so check those back after you're done.

Only aoe2 the conquerors and age of kings.. BUT!! you can fix on AOE2 HD too by renaming "Launcher.exe" > "Launcher2.exe" and "AoK HD.exe" > "Launcher.exe" Then right click Launcher.exe, click properties > Compatibility tab and choose Windows XP SP3 or lower. Basically try them all. (ONLY TRY THIS TRICK IF YOU HAVE A LAPTOP COMPUTER!) If the above dont work go to device manager > Display adapters > disable intel or whatever graphics card you have then try to run the game. Enable it back when you're done playing.

My issue now seems to be that when i goto Aoe2 HD launcher in Steam and press Play, the game doenst open (if I've downgraded it far enough) Can this be some graphics compatibility issue with the patch? I tried both the fixes above, might be unrelated to downgrading, but thought of asking.

@@oldahe865 It's highly likely your graphics card is old besides Windows 7 could also be a reason. I'm not sure if you're aware that you can use your HD to convert to voobly playable (youtube aoe2tools). Quite frankly It's best to play on Voobly than on HD for FPS/active player-base reasons. Even Gameranger is still active. And You always have the option to switch to Debian 9 (desktop) instead of windows. Or you know keep investigating until you know for sure what's going.

@@oldahe865 Sorry for the late respond! Sadly HD recorded games are not compatible with the classic version of AoE2. It's hasn't been that long when I downgraded to a random early version of HD and It worked. Do you have windows 10 Home or windows 7? I helped this guy two weeks ago that had issues running aoe2 by just upgrading his windows 10 home to pro. It appeared that home version has severe limitations. My current system is windows 10 Pro N 21H2. Click your windows start button and search: winver
