Five under $300 turntables, five great ways to get into vinyl

The five ‘tables are: Fluance RT-82, Audio Technica AT LPW40WN, Pro-Ject Primary, U-Turn Orbit Plus, and Music Hall MMF 1.3. Check out Ty Pendlebury’s in-depth CNET group review, www.cnet.com/news/best-turnta...

Purchased the Fluance RT-82 and am very happy with it. One nice feature that I don't see on other tables is the auto stop after the record is finished and has continued to turn for about 15 seconds.

Don't do it. It's a trap. Today: $300 turntable that plugs right into the back of your existing amp. 5 years later: $9,000 table with $1,500 tonearm, $2,000 cartridge, and $4,000 standalone pre-amp. Next purchase: $3,000 ultrasonic record cleaning system.

That's why I gave up vinyl ages ago. Not worth the hassle, and it doesn't sound superior .... crackles and all 😜Files don't need a cartridge, don't collect dust, can faithfully reproduce all the frequencies and stereo image without mastering tricks vinyl needs , no speed wobbles, no centring issues, all the limitations I happily live without. In my house RIP vinyl, for a good 15 years or more now. The audiophiles hanging onto relics of the past. 😁

@@afborro There is a magic that happens at a certain level that sounds organic and human that can only be approximated by digital over $4000. Yes, a hassle, yes a nightmare just aligning your cartridge and yes, getting up every 20 minutes and Zerostatting, carbon brushing, stylus cleaning....Is it worth all the extra hassle? To some of us, yes, in fact totally so, to others, not so much. I've just invested in a Michell Gyrodec, Linn arm, Hana SL cart and a Gold Note PH-10 phonostage and in comparison to my Mytek Brooklyn Bridge, my analog front end simply sounds more unrestrained and natural. It really boils down to this, If the pleasure that the music brings you is better TO YOU, is it worth the ritual, hassle and expense? To me there's no question that it is indeed very worth it.

I think there's a point (and I think it depends on your budget) where a turntable is going to break your heart. I know if I spent $5,000 on a turntable and it revealed that most of my records sound like garbage, I'd be sad.

Love my Grundig PS 3500 from 1982. It's virtually identical to the Technics SL-Q3: Feat. cast aluminium chassis, butter smooth lift, beautiful pitch, direct drive - I inherited it from my grandfather. And you can get one like it online for 90 bucks... A factory new model would have to step up at least two levels, everything else would be nonsense. 🤫😍

At some price point, pretty quickly, your turntable is going to perform ( way ) better then the cutting table that created the Master LP Disc(s). Some points made in this video ( $300 ), belt drive and 90% of all LP's are a pretty good start. You have to get into LP's like those made by Sheffield Labs in the 70's where spending a whole lot more then that on a turntable makes any sense at all. Cutters creating Masters Discs today are CaCa.

I bought a Thorens TD-126B Mk II in 1979, all the turntable has needed was replacement belts. Originally I had a JH Formula 4 arm on it sounded beautiful but it was a pain in the neck to keep it balanced and you had to change the oil every six months or so. I replaced the JH arm with an SME 3009 Series 2 Improved, a lot less messing around. Was using a Signet TK7e with the TKN3 stylus, but I can’t find a good replacement stylus ( only replacement stylus I can find is the TKN22, a bonded elliptical). So I’m on a quest for a new cartridge that, hopefully, sounds as good as the Signet.

I have the same Cart on a 80's Onkyo belt table I fixed up. Great sound and rock solid speed after I did some modifying. ( EE ) I have original pressing of Chicago transit authority and the first 4 Chicago albums. As well as Pink Floyd and of all things , Flip Wilson. Also a few Monkee's originals. I have all but Flip on CD as well. The oldest cd's are not bad but the newer Chicago cd's are much more compressed sounding and the horns don't blare out like on the records. I am a sucker for those horns. I have Klipsch speakers and the Klipsch horns just sound so good. I prefer the actual speakers to my HD595 cans. It isn't high end but damn it sounds so good. I have a rebuilt AudioSource Amp200 driving a 12" sealed sub and when the sub and the horns belt out Chicago, It fells like I am at the concert listening live. Stereo amp is an old 2001 ish Onkyo TX-DS676. If you match older good stuff together you can have great sound for cheap. I only have maybe 1000 total into everything for 2 channel audio, and a few hundred more for the whole 5.1 surround setup. ( speakers were a $1000 kit 1/2 off at x-mas for only 500 with free shipping.)

The combo was enjoyable and decided I was to take the plunge after two or so years with a more expensive combo. I replaced that with the Shure using the money saved and never regret the choice over RT-81 or RT-82. I also purchased a second hand Technics liner tracking with a AT cartridge in it. I have an old ortofon with T4P mount, just needs to replace the stylus with an OM series one. That should works pretty well. The last one I have was an old Kenwood DD quartz lock that I put a Grado Black on as reference. All performs well and provide the different platforms for me to play with - one S tone arm, one straight and one linear.

Between rt80/81/82 I'd go with the 82. The reference 82-85 tables have the best motor that calibrated la itself 500x a second. Great wow and flutter specs for a new turntable. Many forget the old technics that spec out at .03% were back then. Most likely either from sitting or from use most likely won't spec out to that now. .07% is really low for any of the tables 82-85 and usually have to spend a whole lot more to get that kind of wow and flutter rating.

I'm prefacing my question with this info for credibility purposes only. He's done so much studio recording on records back in analog days, and on CDs(digital). When I asked his thoughts on which is better, his response was " since all vinyl today is really recorded digitally I (meaning me) may as well just buy CDs." He still buys vinyl because as he put it, "but we are old school so I like nothing better than putting a record on a turntable. Your thoughts?

Very good explanatory video, Steve. However, I believe that the topic of a motor turntable's speeds, 33 1/3, 45 rpm, it's accuracy should be also considered be very important. The consideration of speed, from my opinion, is not mentioned, and measured much on vinyl. Why should the measurement of the motor, and/or pulleys, gears, not be considered? Perhaps it is not very important since these speeds, if not very exact, do not really matter to the result of listening to the music from a turntable. Furthermore, I understand that speed may not much affect most music reproduced from a record; since there is a lengthy span of time of an entire minute as the recording is revolving, but there is a possibility that small, rare persons can hear the difference. Why not also have the accuracy of a turntable's speed be considered? There must be a bit of importance of the accuracy of speed; mostly my opinion.

I’m surprised that you didn’t include the AT LP120. It’s the most popular direct drive TT out there for a reason. I had a 120 for over 2 1/2 years before I upgraded to the 140. It’s a great TT, and if I didn’t choose to upgrade to the 140, I would still be happy in using it. So is it because that you don’t like direct drive TT’s that you didn’t include the 120? It’s certainly not that it doesn’t fit your criteria-upgradable cartridge, low motor noise (I never had any rumble with mine), steady speed with a strobe light included, among other things. And in many places, it’s still under $300. I am NOT trying to start the whole old, tired debate of which is better, belt or direct drive, but I AM bringing it up for fair play reasons. It deserves to be on your list.

Excellent videos. Question: Why are some Turntables called, "DJ Turntables"?

  • @billwillard9410

    @billwillard9410

    5 жыл бұрын

Claude C DJ (disc jockey) turntables were more robust models that were fully manual (there were a lot if semiautomatic/ fully automatic ones at one time) that would allow you to move the record in reverse to cue the song up to where it started or so it matched the beat of the song that currently playing. They had to get to proper speed quickly, allowed quick stops for changing records, and had a speed control. A cartridge that allowed back cueing (having the stylus on the record while moving the record backwards) as well as the fabulous scratching effect without damaging the stylus or cartridge was also necessary. The Technics, Stanton and Numark direct drive TT’s were very popular. Many people ended up using these as their home tables.

@Claude C All of what he said @Bill Willard and they're mostly powered by direct drive motors, because they allow for cueing, while most hifi turntables today use a belt drive motor. belt drive transmits fewer vibrations and therefore creates a lower noise floor, a direct drive motor is going to be more consistent in its speed, quicker in getting to that speed, and you can back cue with them, but they are a bit louder. you could theoretically dj with any turntable, although one with direct drive would make the most sense, speed controls, and easily swappable cartridges are a plus, but 'dj turntable' is just a marketing term and has no clearly defined meaning.

@@IliyaOsnovikov Sure, Technics made and makes some fantastic direct drive turntables and in any case, the differences between a good Technics' direct drive and a good belt drive are going to be minute when it comes to the noise they emit. But Technics never markets their turntables as "DJ turntables' they sell their DDs labeled as HiFi. Turntables that are actively marketed as such (and as explained in my previous comment, deceptively so) shouldn't be compared to a Technics turntable, although some resellers pop that label on there when selling them, seemingly believing their customers to be not very educated when buying their turntable.

I need a semi auto... I have had other TT's, but it just drove me nuts hearing that needle hit the label. It honestly stressed me out, as I would find myself waiting to jump up to play rescue the cartridge, it made listening to vinyl a stressful endeavor. So, I recently bought the Denon DP-400, it is semi semi-auto and $499. The tone arm lifts at the end, and that is it, it just lifts. You have to get up and move it and turn off the table. It has two shortfalls, no cover, so I built one. And the feet do not level, so I had to shim. It does have a detachable head shell and other manufacturers shells will work. So far, I am happy with mine. Running the Denon DL-160 cartridge. And yes, I spent time setting it up properly. What else I like is that I can use my own audio cables and my own phono preamp, along with a proper ground. It sounds great to my ears. I wish these manufacturers would at least have this feature as an option, simply lift the tone arm before it hits the label. It cannot be that difficult to do and I don't see how it would interfere in the sound. I cannot hear any of that, but I can hear my needle hitting the label.

If a record is made right that doesn't happen. Of about 1,200 LPs I've got two with this problem: Minutemen "The Punchline" (SST), Bela Bartok- Contrasts for Violin and Piano (Dover). On both, the labels aren't affixed correctly. They over lap the run-out groove's locking point so rather than looping as it should, the needle hops on to the label and goes for noisy panic-inducing ride.

I was looking at rt82 for about a year and finally wanted to pull the trigger Problem is all 82,83,84 out of stock. Did some quick math. With the $120 acrylic platter and the $250 ortophone blue, $500 isn't bad. Plus it's in stock haha. So it's supposed to arrive today. :-) By all means $500, to me is no easy amount to spend, and if it's out of your range the rt-82 is the same table with different platter and cart. Same table though and can always upgrade it later. Great deal at 299. But since rt-85 was only one left so I went with it. Wow and flutter specs on the 82-85 are awesome and punch above their price point among other tables. And the servo motor is really nice But the rt-82,83,84,85 have great specs way above the price point at .07% wow and flutter. And .13% speed variation on 82,83,84 and .1% on 85 (because of acrylic platter) are great too. And if you get the acrylic platter later on any other 82-84 the speed variation will lower to the 85's .1%

From what I've seen of the newer tables at more modest price ranges, the build and component quality seems quite poor using low quality chinese sourced components.

I was using a PS3 for my front end. I really liked the ability to upsample to 192Khz. with custom dithering. The sound quality was quite respectable to me, especially when I got brave (some might say crazy) enough to experiment with modifications to reduce and remove vibration & resonance. I believe these consoles have an untapped potential for great sound if you're willing and able to go to extremes with modification. I have read that they kept the audio upsampling feature in the PS4. Do you know about, or use that feature yourself? There is also an underground audiophile cult around the Playstation 1, model SCPH-1001 (SCPH-1002 in Europe) which had an unbelieveably good DAC built in, and RCA outputs for the audio signal. Check out this review on Six Moons: 6moons.com/audioreviews/leben2/system.html Also, listen to this video over any good audio system to get a taste: m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJqHxc9wdNS7hZM.html

The PS3 shouldn't sound anywhere near as good as it does, but here we are. I think you should try finding those upsampling settings on your PS4 first, then play some well-encoded, high bit-rate mp3 files through it to get a feel for what's possible. The only thing that will cost you is some time and effort. As for modifications to the PS3, they were all physical modifications designed to reduce vibration & resonance, and to help the unit run cooler. Look here for the first lines of defence: hubpages.com/games-hobbies/3-tips-for-a-cooler-running-and-greener-ps3-system-models-cecha01-cechg01- This is only information on keeping them running cooler, nothing to do with vibration. The above information is vital for longevity. Also, if you have an original "phat" PS3, with the model number CECHA01, give it to me!! : D Seriously, if you have that model, you should know that it will play SACD's as well as Blu-ray discs. 99% of the sound quality of a turntable comes from the cartridge. If you don't like how a $300 turntable sounds, just put a better cartridge on it and you'll have 95% of the sound quality of a turntable that's 10 times the price. They do mention noise and speed consistency, which are really the only important sound quality considerations in turntables at this level.

@@ModernClassic I've been having a internal battle over that, got the RT-81 2 years ago for Christmas, and will hopefully get a new cart (at-vm95ml) for a Christmas present, I keep looking at tables in the $1k-$2k range and wonder would it really be worth it? My 81 is dead solid on both speeds, and has zero rumble whatsoever, and has the nice feature of cue arm stop, stop at end of record, and a switch to change speeds as I play 45 just as mush as 33.

Saw the Fluance Rt82 at a coffee shop. It looked incredibly well built, with a nice tonearm. There are always good vintage tables being sold on Craigslist. 70s sony, Pioneer, Sansui, etc., are easy to repair. I own 2 Sony ps-x6, ps-x5. Built like tanks.

Agree, especially - but not only - in the budget class new turntables are at a (quality and comfort) loss against vintage turntables. The only advantage new turntables have is a warranty card. Regarding the PS-X6: Back then this was a upper middleclass offering, but in todays standart it is clearly way above that - and then some.

I hope I'm not being elitist but my Roksan xerxes x is so so much better than $300 TTs.I realise that affordability is very big factor. Once you've been captivated by higher end sound ;you are hooked. I started small and worked my way up and I completely understand how beginners feel.

For $300 anyone can easily find fully working vintage DD fully automatic TT from golden era of vinyl. And it will have 100x better sound than modern cheap TTs.

Rastislav Ledaj there is a good reason why vintage turntables were better up to a certain price point. Read this: There is the reality of economies of scale. In the 1970's, when vinyl was THE medium for audio playback, a company like Technics, Kenwood, Sony, etc. could design and produce a audiophile quality turntable and price it reasonably. Knowing that they were going to be able to sell x1,000 units allowed them to find a balance between price and quantity. Now, even with the vinyl resurgence, the market for turntables is astoundingly smaller. The only units that are going to sell in substantial quantity are the entry level to mid-fi units. If you are going to make your money in quantity, you need to reduce your cost per unit, by using lower-end, mass-market components in order to maximize the profit. Once you start pushing the psychological barriers of dollar thresholds (like +$500 or +$1,000, +5,000) then your consumer base drops considerably. At that point (especially in the +$1,000 and beyond bracket) you are dealing with a different type of consumer who values different elements of the turntable over someone who is only willing to pay $200-300. Very often that person will appreciate and understand the engineering and craftsmanship that goes into a well put together piece of equipment. There is also the element of return on investment. Outside of materials, there is the time, energy, experience and knowledge (mostly the last two) that the company or individual creating the turntable sees as a quantifiable value. The +$1,000 buyer mentioned above is usually one, who through their own life experience, understands and appreciates what it means to have a skill set and knowledge base that isn't material, but definitely valuable. That is a lot of what is being priced into audiophile level turntables. That and the limited consumer base dictates that the turntable be priced a level of profitability that will sustain the business beyond cost expenditures. Basically I would not spend less than $1200 on modern turntable today

Graham Strahle It absolutely, positively had to keep a steady speed without wavering, and hopefully a fairly accurate speed. A table that can’t do that is useless.

It’s difficult to change a cartridge? It’s two screws and four color coded wires. Get an alignment tool (they’re not expensive), balance the tone arm, set the tracking weight and anti-skate and your done. Ten minutes tops.
