What about the Ilkley crit when he was about 14. He won the schoolboys race, then won the junior race & finished in the leading group of the elite race all in the same evening.

Agree, but Tom Pidcott and his team must be diligent of the Belgian cycling world because since the world of cycling has evolved to be a true multi nation spot,i.e. ,SOUTH AMERICA ,USA,AUSTRALIA, GERMANY,GREAT BRITAIN,ETC.BELGIUM HAS LOST IT'S WAY IN CREATING A TRUE GREAT IN THE SPOT,AND NEED SUCCESS DESPERATELY, THEREFORE, TOM PIDCOTT BE ALERT FOR ANY BELGIAN SKULLDUGGERY!!!!
Bike handling skills are something you don't automatically learn on the road.
I've gone down a rabbit hole. I was watching a WW1 documentary and it mentioned the last Tour de France before WW1. I checked it out and 4 hours later I'm here haha

I was a fresher at uni in Durham when Pidcock won that round of the Tour Series. Remember going along to the race and being thoroughly entertained - didn’t realise just how meteoric and fast his rise would be at the time but it’s not surprising. That bike change was a thing of beauty

That must have been incredible! Yep - it seems like he could do anything at this point. Maybe a Grand Tour winner one day?
Watching this young British talent at having big successes in cycling shows me that this country has so many hopeful representers of the sport and their own origin. I think the world cycling is ready for a new chapter and we are lucky to accompany the change.
I love how he works his way up to first place, then burys the field!! Amazing confidence and ability!!

Pidcock flying down the descent at the 12th stage of this years Tour de France left me speechless. He was leaving his competitors in the dust left, right and centre, making up so much time! I wish I had even a quarter of his bike handling skills!

i tend to watch road racing and I have recently started to watch cyclocross. What comes to mind is this...these cyclo cross guys, is it any wonder they can go from that discipline and dominate the roadies. I mean the immense skillset that the cx guys possess one of them being ridiculous amounts of core strength and another being mad bike handling skills to name a few it does not surprise me that they are knocking the socks off of the roadies. Plus I was absolutely hooked watching the CX guys go about their business.

I am not sure, he hasn't really shown me anything that tells me he can beat the best GC riders currently here, nor the ones coming up, maybe in a low competition GT if he really goes for it. And he'll really have to improve his ITT, it just sucks now. To me he currently looks more like a classics rider and stage hunter than a real GC threat, essentially like WVA when he isn't a domestique. He can prove me wrong in the future though.

@@dpcater You mean the short technical ITT that should suite riders that are stronger technically (like CX riders)? And in that case Pidcock also started in much better weather conditions. So that TdF ITT wasn't entirely representative of his TT capabilities. And even then he finished 15th. So his best result ever is a 15th place with a lot of advantages in that one for him.
What an ABSOLUTE MONSTER!👍🏿

Here's hoping Pidcock is in top form by Stage 14 of the Tour, and that he can stay with the leaders up the final HC climb of Joux Plane. If he can keep touch with the leaders, or even somewhere close, it sets up perfectly for him to bomb the descent for a stage win. Depending on GC standings and stage dynamics, that descent could see some crazy action. I could see Pogacar taking really aggressive risk to try and break the nerves of Vingegard if it's obvious he can't beat him on the climbs. I could see Pidcock bombing and Pogie trying to follow. Guaranteed excitement regardless of how it unfolds.

kinda off topic but all this Brit speech got me thinking, who thinks Harry's gonna try to kill William to try and be king?
Superman move on the bike (abdomen on the saddle) caused me an inguinal hernia. Needed laparoscopic surgery and a mesh fixated on the inside. Just a point to remember.
WVA and MVDP are currently the CX/road combo riders of the generation. They achieved so much more than him on the same age in CX, while usually mostly battling eachother. They were very dominant in CX by Pidcock's age and Pidcock hasn't really shown this dominance (even in their absence) except for some flashes here and there. The road is difficult ofcourse since VA and VDP really only went to it on a later age (+-23-24yo), while Pidcock has been in one of the best road teams since he was 21. I personally also find it difficult to see how the crit circuit competition stacks up against WT road racing, to me it seems pretty weak tbh. Something that I also found is that Pidcock seems to have matured earlier than others at young age. Which can explain why he was winning those races you mention on that age. You can also see this in his TT performances. In juniors he was really good at it, but then later with the u23 and elite he was getting surpassed in it by riders before being generally quite worse than him with the juniors. Now his ITT results really suck, which is surprising for a rider at Ineos. Ofcourse he is still a big talent, just not the biggest imo. His best discipline might be MTB, followed by CX and then road. But he'll really need to concentrat one to achieve more, that or be happy with just being competitive on the road in the spring classics (like MVDP usually does).
@monument_hq
Жыл бұрын
Yeah the crit scene in the UK is definitely not as strong as WT road racing, even though it's pretty strong! It feels that with another year and some more focus, he could be an incredible rider. Like you say, it's just about finding which discipline/races are the best for him to focus on.
He's so small, no one can get a draft!! lol
